When you think of diseases associatedwith aging, a few come likely come to mind:arthritis, Alzheimer's, heart disease.
Few of us, however, likely think or knowabout the leading cause of severe vision lossfor Canadians over the age of 50, age-relat-ed macular degeneration (AMD).
There are two types of AMD, wet and dry.Wet AMD is the more aggressive form andthis year alone, close to 30,000 Canadianswill be diagnosed with it.
Wet AMD is caused by the spontaneousgrowth of abnormal blood vessels that leakinto the back of the eye causing the maculato swell up and distort central vision.
If left untreated, it eventually destroysthe macula, causing severe central visionloss.
Your vision is precious. Do what is inyour control to hold on to it. While there isno cure for wet AMD and some degree ofvision loss with aging is inevitable, there are
specific things you can do to preserve yourvision:
• Schedule regular eye exams. Regularscreening examinations, especially for any-one over 50, can detect early signs of age-related macular degeneration.
• Contact your eye doctor immediately ifyou notice a change in your vision. Wavylines or blind spots are classic symptoms ofwet AMD.
• If you have been diagnosed with wetAMD, regular monitoring is key to limitingvision loss. Visit your eye doctor or special-ist regularly. Don't miss any scheduledappointments.
• Seek available resources and support.Organizations like The Foundation FightingBlindness are there to help you cope.
• Know your treatment options. Speak toyour eye specialist to learn about newadvances for the treatment of wet AMD.
