Red Knight Quilt Winner Winner of the Red Knight quilt raffle was alumni and life member, Amy Ter-nasky Makemson ’74. The drawing was held during the homecoming game on October 10, 2014. Congratulations to Amy and to all those that purchased tick-ets on this magnificent quilt, the alumni association “thanks you”. The Piece-makers Group of St. Francis Church donated their time and talents. The quilt was offered to the alumni association to raise money for scholarships. I am happy to say that $1087 was raised on ticket sales. Picture will follow in the spring newsletter.
Class of 1965 Save the Date The class of 1965 will celebrate their fiftieth reunion over Labor Day weekend 2015. The dinner is set for Saturday, Sep-tember 5th and a home football game will be available on Friday, September 4. Your class officers, senior senate mem-bers and several classmates have been planning and accepting donations to cele-brate the fiftieth reunion. If you haven’t been contacted, please contact Bill Blank-enship (740-537-3884), Dave Pellior (614-870-7281, email: [email protected]), or Jennifer Dougherty Arunyon (email: [email protected]) for further infor-mation.
So Long, Farewell, Auf wiedersehen, Goodbye……….. There’s a sad sort of clanging that echoes through the halls of THS. The bell at band camp was rung for the last time by Kirk and Sally George this past August, ending a thirty-three year career as band and choir directors at Toronto. The Georges are retiring at the end of this school year, although we are sure they will just redirect those music skills. The celebration began on the final evening at band camp this summer when former alumni band members showed up to pay tribute and reminisce about their band camp experiences. The band camp bell, which once proudly rang calling students to school, and has been a lasting tradition of being rung by the seniors at band camp, was dedicated to Kirk and Sally George who rang it for the final time this year. Jessica George ’01 and Michael George ’06 organized an Alumni Band Night Cele-bration for September 19th that would honor their parents’ years of teaching and dedi-cation to the Toronto High School Band. Hundreds of letters were sent out to alumni band members and as the night approached, one hundred twenty-five former stu-dents gathered, sporting tee shirts with a picture of Mr. George and the caption, “Keeping the Pride Alive Since 1982”. The alumni band members were joined by the current seventy band members mak-ing it one of the largest bands in history to play on Clarke Hinkle Field. A special trib-ute song to Mr. George was performed at half time, followed by the THS Alma Mater. There was not a dry eye on the field. A tailgate party, courtesy of the Saner Family, was held after rehearsal that after-noon and before the football game. A nostalgic evening ended with an after game
party held at Margaret’s Café. Kirk and Sally George would like to thank everyone who was part of this special night and especially their children, Jessica and Mi-chael, for putting it all together. So Long, farewell, auf wieder-sehen, goodbye, goodbye, good-bye, goodbye……..We hate to see you go and leave this happy place.
