The described product attributes and application examples have been tested in the Schmincke laboratory. The information is based on our current state of technical findings and experience. Due to the diversity of applications in terms of painting techniques, materials and working conditions, as well as numerous possible influences, this information is based on a general application range. How to compare artists’ colours? The pigment is the key!If you want to compare certain colours when buying or choosing in your own assortment, you should first pay attention to the pigmentation of the respective colours. For all Schmincke colours, this is noted on the container/packaging (e.g. PW6, PY184, PR255). In the corresponding colour charts (printed and online at www.schmincke.de) you will also find the name of the pigments (PW6 = titanium dioxide, PY184 = bismuth vanadate, PR255 = diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole).

Only if you compare colours of the same pigmentation, you will get a representative statement - anything else would be like comparing apples with pears... So, it is not enough to take two colours of the same name, e.g. vermilion, because the pigmen-tation can vary depending on the manufacturer and the quality of the colour. This refers to all parts of the comparability of colours, i.e. the opacity or glaze ability, the lightfastness, the colour shift from wet to dry, in watercolours also the granulation ability or the anchoring in the paper. One can say that the painting properties are significantly influenced by the pigment used.

Also good to know: Colours with only one or two pigments are always purer than colours with several different pigments. Colour lines with as many one- and two-pigment shades as possible are an indication for highest quality, because the colours remain pure and do not grey even when mixed. This is considered with great importance by Schmincke when formulating its products, so that especially in the premium assortments, many one- and two-pigment colours can be found.
