Goals
As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
The content areas that will be the focus for improving student achievement are the following: LanguageArts, Math, Science, and Social Studies.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
In order to improve teaching and learning we will scale up the following BEST practices:
Marzano’s “Scales and Learning Goals”C.A.R.E Cycle of Instruction
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
In order to increase performance within the SES band, teachers have received professionaldevelopment regarding the Marzano’s high yield learning strategy, Scales and Learning Goals. Teachers will deconstruct their course standards with the students. Students and teachers will useperformance scales to monitor a student’s understanding and mastery of the standard. Teacher’s willcontinue to use the C.A.R.E. cycle to enrich students who are performing at a Level 3 on their learningscale by providing activities that address real world applications (problems and solutions) ofimplementation of the particular standard that go beyond what was taught in the classroom.
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.
As a result of using Scales and Learning goals to monitor student performance of the Florida Standards, students have demonstrated higher achievement on their formative assessment and performance tasks. For example, by using the an argumentation performance learning scale for Language Arts, studentswho were able to write a Level 3 argument essay were allocated time to produce a Level 4 task bysubmitting an opinion article to the Sun Sentinel. As a result of this strategy, students earning higherscores on the following Argument Essay performance task and were more successful on their RI.3.8formative assessments.

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
Based on the SES Band Data, the content areas of Reading and Mathematics will be focused on forimproving student achievement for our lowest percentile groups. Within these groups, we will work toimprove student achievement within the lowest quartile of students in Reading and Mathematics.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
We will scaleup Best Pratice #1: PLC in order to increase performance within the SES Band.
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
We have restructured our PLC groups so that we have more specific groups based on content area (e.g.ELA 9, ELA 10, Algebra I 912, Algebra II 912). Each of these PLC groups are focused on studentdata to improve instructional practice and includes time to analyze student data. The CARE cycleserves as the structure for each of the PLC groups. Each group also address Best Practices for helpingstudents to succeed on the EOC/FSA.
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.
We began restructuring the PLC groups last year using the CARE cycle. We have found that thestudents were successful based on the SES Band Data (Cypress Bay High School is currently ranked
8th in the state). With the creation of more content specific PLC groups, it is expected that there willbe an improvement in scores for our lowest performing students.
In addition, some of our fragile students could be in either two math classes, and/or an English classthat has a teacher who is English and Reading certified. The placement of the students is based on testdata and grades from the 201415 school year.

The school’s mean score for the 2015 school year for 11th grade was 49.4 incritical reading, 49.9 in math, and 47.0 in writing with 56% of students meeting mastery benchmark. The national mean score for the 2015 school year for 10th grade was 42.1 in critical reading, 43.4 inmath, and 39.3 writing with 39.3% of students meeting mastery benchmark. The national mean score offor the 2015 school year for 11th grade was 46.9 in critical reading, 48.6 in math, and 45.3 writing with48% meeting mastery benchmark. The district’s mean score for the 2015 school year for 10th gradewas 40.4 in critical reading, 41.0 in math, and 37.4 writing with 29.6% of students meeting masterybenchmark. The district’s mean score of for the 2015 school year for 11th grade was 49.9 in criticalreading, 50.9 in math and writing with 57.8% meeting mastery benchmark.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
In order to increase student achievement on the PSAT all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students whereprovided an opportunity to take the PSAT. This was to ensure that we were inclusive of all students(ESE, ELL, GIFTED, Lowest Quartile, and all Sub Populations). The school also initiated acollaborative partnership with the College Board to provide trainings for teachers and studentresources. Lead teachers were provided opportunities to train with the College Board and share theinformation in their PLCs. The school has also purchased access to AP online course modules forteachers. By making the PSAT inclusive to all 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students each student will beprovided with access to an individualized study plan that uses KHAN academy to increase studentachievement. The school also has implemented AP potential, which uses the results of PSAT scores topredict courses that will yield the highest probability of success.
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
All instructional staff will participate in a professional learning community that employees a reflectiveand monitored approach to learning. Prior to PLC meetings, PLC facilitators are provided theopportunity to reflect as a group, share best practices, share resources, and give feedback on studentachievement & teacher learning. Within the PLCs teachers employ the Analyzing Student Work(ASW) method to examine how to move students toward mastery and beyond mastery. PLC alsoexamine and explore how to provide timely, meaningful, and purposeful feedback to students. PLCsexamine how to effectively implement accountable talk in the classroom. Students engage in the BESTprocess by reflecting on their own student work, examining their error of reasons, and providingfeedback to their peers. Students are also engaged by using College Board personalization profiletutorials to improve student achievement.
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.
Accountable Talk is an instructional strategy used to create a learning environment where both studentsand teachers have accountability. The three areas are accountability to the learning community, accountability to accurate knowledge, and accountability to rigorous thinking. Accountability to thelearning community is designed to teach students how to talk to each other. Accurate knowledge isanother component of accountable talk and is designed to teach students to use accurate content andcite sources of content. Accurate rigor thinking if the final component of accountable and it teachesstudents to use accurate content/sources to support their ideas and statements. Students will alsoparticipate in performance task across multiple content areas to increase their critical thinking skills. Inorder to supplement all this through literacy, textbased evidence will also be employed across contentareas.

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
As evidenced in the SES Band Data and FSA ELA data, English Language Arts will be the focus forimproving student achievement at South Broward High School.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
The following BEST practices will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band:
Academic Advancement CampsProfessional Learning Communities
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
Academic Advancement Camps will be offered after school leading up to Spring testing. Camps willutilize studentlevel data to drive instruction and provide grade level/subject appropriate drill andpractice, and remediation and enrichment activities for students. In addition, accommodations will beprovided for students with special needs and English Language Learners. ACT preparation will also beoffered in order to increase student proficiency on college entrance exams.
Language Arts and Reading teachers will utilize the CARE cycle through Professional LearningCommunities (PLCs) to implement effective learning strategies using studentlevel data driveninstruction. By increasing the amount of peer observations and collaboration through PLCs, LanguageArts and Reading teachers will be able to share BEST practices and bridge the gap between the twosubject areas.
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.
Academic Advancement Camps: Biology and Mathematics saw the highest attendance at AcademicAdvancement Camps last year. Teachers used studentlevel data to drive instruction and providedstudents with remediation and enrichment beyond the classroom which lead to academic improvementson End of Course Exams. Academic Advancement Camps in English Language Arts will be scaledupusing strategies that lead to the successes experienced by Biology and Mathematics.
CARE Cycle: Biology and Mathematics Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) successfullyimplemented the CARE cycle by using studentlevel data to drive instruction and sharing BESTpractices through peer observation/collaboration. Teacher collaboration through PLCs lead to academicimprovements on Biology and Mathematics End of Course Exams. Goals
As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
FSA data indicates that our current sophomores and juniors had an average proficiency of the FSAELA of 50.4%. This suggests that almost have of our total 10th & 11th grade population is notproficient. Of that percentage, 98% of current 10th graders did not pass the writing portion of the FSAELA. Of the 11th grade cohort, 66% did not accumulate sufficient points to pass the writing portion. Of particular concern was the Intergration of Knowledge and Ideas as it pertains to writing. As aresult, in accordance of the district initiative, South Plantation High School has chosen to focus onInformational Text Style writing through our Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) program.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
All teachers across all content areas will participate in a writing curriculum comprised of writingprompts and student samples to be administered each grading period. Student samples will be assessedaccording to rubrics with additional feedback for improvement. Prompts will be relevant to eachcontent area, either teacher selected or partnership with the Literacy Coach to obtain sample material. PLC groups will meet to discuss strengths and weaknesses of student samples along with teachingstrategies to address deficiencies. Additionally, English and Reading departments will partner via PLC's to address writing standards asthey relate to the upcoming spring FSA for current 10th and 11th grade students. The followingIntegration of Knowledge and Ideas standards are the current focus for 20152016 WAC: CCSS. ELALiteracy.CCRA.R.9: Analyze how two or more texts address similar themes or topics inorder to build knowledge or to compare the approaches authors take. CCSS.ELALiteracy.CCRA.W.9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to supportanalysis, reflection, and research.
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
Professional Learning Communities will allow teachers the opportunity to discuss common writingprompts and learning objectives. They share data, teaching practices and tracking of student learninggains. Through PLC's, teachers can selfassess teaching and learning practices through framingquestions when assessing student work: Is the essay developed with specific information (facts, statistics, etc.) that is related to the main topic? Does all of the information in your writing support the main topic? Does your essay have enough proof to sustain your claim? Does the writer convince you of anything? Can the student give an example of how he/she knows that they are correct in what they are saying?
At the end of each grading period, a WAC team of teachers and an administrator assemble to analyzeprompts and student work to check for comprehension and recommendations for improvement.

As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
Primary areas for improvement include Reading and Math.
Currently, 42% of Gr. 10 students demonstrate proficiency in Reading as is evidenced by performanceon the Florida Standards Assessment. Currently, 62% of students demonstrate proficiency in Math
The schoolwide goal is to increase the number of students demonstrating proficiency in Reading andMath.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
The BEST Practice to be scaled up is teacher use of Classroom Strategies and Behaviors.
The strategies include Helping Students Interact with New Knowledge, Helping Students Practice andDeepen New Knowledge, and Helping Student Generate and Test Hypotheses
Professional Development will be provided for areas of growth. Implementation of the strategies willinclude modeling by academic coaches and include evaluation.
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
Teacher use of Classroom Strategies and Behaviors will be measured using the Marzano iObservationtool with emphasis on 7 researchbased strategies that are most effective in increasing studentacheivement:
1. Identifying Critical Content 2. Elaborating on New Information 3. Recording and Representing Knowledge 4. Examining Similarities and Differences 5. Examining Errors in Reasoning 6. Revising Knowledge 7. Engaging Students in Cognitively Complex Tasks
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.

Goals
As evidenced in the SES Band Data, which content area(s) will be the focus for improving studentachievement?
Based on the 20142015 SES Band Data, West Broward High School will focus on Reading.
What BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup to improve teaching and learning in order to increaseperformance within the SES Band?
Now that we have received results from the first administered FSA ELA, we have disaggregated dataand have determined areas of strengths and deficiences. We have established a need to focus ondeveloping literacy standards across the content areas. Of primary focus will be Cluster 2 Craft andStructure and Cluster 3 Integration of Knowledge and Ideas.
Describe how the BEST Practice(s) will be scaledup.
The BEST Practice of concentration on the Florida Literacy Standards will be scaled up through thefollowing:
Two new Professional Learning Committees have been establishedBiology and 9th and 10thgrade intensive reading and US History and 11th and 12th grade intensive reading.Professional development for the effective implementation of the Literacy Standards has beenprovided to all faculty. Such professional development will be ongoing. Reading classes have incorporated Khan Academy to enhance reading instruction.
A schoolwide emphasis has been placed on SAT/ACT preparedness. After school remediation is being provided Monday through Friday. This remediation coversSAT/ACT and peer tuturoing for all subject areas.
Instructional Implications: Discuss the success of specific strategies/activities and provide arationale as to why those academic improvements occurred as a result of those strategies.
As a result of the afterschool remediation in 2015 and ACT preparation provided by EducationalPursuit, West Broward's graduation rate was 97%. Approximately 47 seniors had not met the readinggraduation requirement in March of 2015. Following intensive remediation and mentoring, more than90 percent of this group met the graduation reading requirement by the close of May 2015.
