Students on Scholarship must perform teaching/ laboratory supervision duties to fulfil the requirements of the Graduate Assistantship Programme. If the total required hours are not met by the time the thesis is submitted for examination, the Scholar will have his/her transcript (both unofficial and official), student status letter, conferment letter and degree scroll (for graduating student) withheld until the fulfilment of the requirement.

Planning Scholars should work closely with supervisors to fulfil the hours on a yearly (Academic Year) basis.

TA-Ship TA-Ship Scholar Requirements

CGPA Requirement 3.5

Teaching Requirement • 3 hours starting from 1st semester • Teaching duties cannot exceed 10 hours per week • Must teach for 3 semesters • Hours are flexible as long as the student meets the

minimum 39 hours (3 hours x 13 weeks) per semester for 3 semesters which is a total of 117 hours

• Student’s programme, may at their discretion, engage students to teach more than 3 hours per week

Teaching Duties Includes and is not limited to, course preparation, consultation, invigilation, tutorials and marking assignments.

The programme consists of three components, two compulsory and one optional. The three components of the Programme are as follows:

Communications/ Writing Training Programme for PhD Students

Compulsory Complete 39 training hours of communications courses Compulsory 3-minute thesis (3MT) presentation symposium organised by

the Graduate Students Association (GSA) and Graduate College

Optional Students who need one-on-one tutoring can schedule appointments with special tutors at LCC Communications Cube or NIE Grad Centre for individualised feedback on their writing and oral communication skills.

Definitions • Plagiarism

‘to use or pass off as one’s own, writings or ideas of another, without acknowledging or crediting the source from which the ideas are taken’.

• Academic Fraud A form of academic dishonesty involving cheating, lying and stealing.

• Facilitating Academic Dishonesty This includes allowing another student to copy an assignment that is supposed to be done individually, allowing another student to copy answers during an examination/assessment and taking an examination/assessment or doing an assignment for another student.

Penalty Guidelines • Schools in HASS apply the following penalty policies on

plagiarism:

Notwithstanding the standard policy listed above, HASS reserves the right to apply other penalties, or escalate the penalty, if they are deemed to be warranted in the circumstances.

will take a long table while waiting for a cubicle to be freed up. Here are a list of items provided for all our Graduate Students:

Leave Matters for Full Time Students Unofficial Leave /

Vacation Leave Leave of Absence (LOA) Maternity Leave

(Similar to LOA)

• No carrying forward • No half-day leave • Stipends not deducted • Subject to supervisor’s

approval

• Counted towards maximum period of candidature and period of scholarship

• Administrative fee of $53.50 per semester to retain their names on the register

• Surrender student pass if LOA is more than 3 months

• Subject to Associate Chair (Research)’s approval

• Full scholarship stipend will be granted up to a limit of 8 weeks

• Medical certificate must be issued by a medical practitioner registered with the Singapore Medical Council.

Leave Matters for Full Time Students Reservist In Camp Training Medical Compassionate Leave

• Singapore citizens only • Stipends will not be

deducted

• Including hospitalization and maternity leave

• Must be supported by valid medical certificate issued by a registered medical practitioner in Singapore

• Used for bereavement of an immediate family member

• Taken within 7 calendar days of the death date of the family member

• Immediate family member refers to student’s spouse, child, parent, parent-in-law and grandparent

• Stipends will not be deducted

Leave Matters for Full Time Students A full-time research student may be granted vacation leave subject to satisfactory academic progress of the student and approval of the School. It will be the responsibility of the students to ensure that 1. They have made covering arrangement for their teaching

duties/assignments 2. They are not required to attend any courses during the leave

period 3. In times of emergency, they shall keep their supervisors informed

within 24 hours 4. They shall report to their supervisors immediately after their

return from leave

Can I take additional courses?

Course Registration Matters Can I be exempted from courses if I have taken an equivalent course from another university?

What are the maximum number of courses allowable per semester?

• 1 out of 3 courses for MA students • 3 out of 6 courses for PhD students

• Research students may take up to 2 additional courses during their candidature (on top of total programme requirements)

• MA Students – 9 AUs or 3 Courses per semester • PhD Students – 15 AUs or 5 Courses per semester
