Message from our Executive DirectorI am pleased to share the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation 2019 AnnualReport with our donors and friends. Even though we are in the midst of aworldwide pandemic, we wish to share with you some highlights of 2019.
We continue to build a better tomorrow, one block at a time. In 2019, SACFtechnology was updated, which included a new server, new desktop computers,Wi-Fi access, updated email addresses, updates to our eGrant applicationsystem, and changes to our paper scholarship applications which include fillablePDFs. We continue to review our processes and procedures to find efficienciesand opportunities to reduce our operational budget, which enables us to provideadditional financial support for our Schuylkill County community.
In 2019, SACF provided $843,153.43 in grants, graduation awards, andscholarships to our Schuylkill County nonprofits and students. The positive impact thatour organizations and students are making on our community is widespread and diverse.
Schuylkill County nonprofits continue to implement and present projects andprograms to better our community. For example, Schuylkill County’s VISIONpartnered with the North Schuylkill School District to build and plant gardens at theelementary school for fourth grade students to learn the life cycle and benefits offresh fruits and vegetables. Downtown Shenandoah Inc. presented a Mariachi bandduring their 21st Annual Heritage Day Festival. Our local public libraries purchasednew large print books, and created and presented Summer Reading Programs forour children. With grant assistance, local performing art groups some of which areSchuylkill Free Shakespeare, Gabriel Chamber Ensemble, Ashland Area CommunityChoir, Schuylkill Choral Society, Inc., and Lift Your Spirits Performing Arts, presenteda wide range of musical and cultural events.
The Charles Werner Endowment Fund continues to support the children of the PineGrove area, through support of the Pine Grove Community Church student ministryand library program, as well as offering free swim days through the TremontCommunity Organization.
The graduating seniors of our county continue to receive scholarships and graduationawards due to the generosity and forethought of others. The students continue toaccomplish amazing things and are bringing their education and experience backto Schuylkill County.
We thank you, our donors and friends, for supporting our Schuylkill Countycommunity through the Schuylkill Area Community Foundation.

Categories of GivingThere are many ways to give through the CommunityFoundation. Here are some of the most common methodsthat donors choose:
CashCash is the easiest way to contribute. Donors who make gifts of cashare eligible for a charitable deduction in the year the gift was made.
Appreciated StockStocks may be donated to the Community Foundation as a charitable gift.Donors are eligible for a tax deduction for the fair market value of thestock and can avoid a capital gains tax.
BequestsA charitable bequest is the most common form of planned giving andit provides important estate tax advantages. Donors will continue theircharitable legacies for years to come by including a gift in their will tosupport the causes or organizations that are important to them. SACFhas recommended legal language for all types of charitable bequests.
Retirement Plans and Life InsuranceDonors can use assets held in an individual retirement account (IRA),401(k), 403(b), or a similar account to start a fund at the CommunityFoundation at the time of their death. These accounts, while veryattractive to defer tax during lifetime, are the most heavily taxed assetsin an estate at death.
Charitable IRA OpportunityDonors who are age 70-1/2 and older are able to make donationsto charity from their IRA without needing to claim that distributionas income. To transfer a gift from your IRA, please contact your IRAadministrator directly. Transfers from IRAs can be made to designatedfunds, field of interest funds, scholarship funds, and agency endowments. This provision does NOT allow transfers to Donor Advised Funds.
