News from the Church ...Dear friends, With my wife Sarah we went to Fakenham Cinema to watch the film “The Greatest Showman” when it came out on release. It was enjoyable but I thought it nothing special so I was surprised when it became a bit of a phenomenon. It projected PT Barnum in a more favourable light than what he deserved, as his own book “The Art of Money Getting” says more about the true man, and he never let truth get in the way of a good story! The film is of course a good story, and when Barnum is down on his luck, his “family” those who work for him at his Circus, rally around him to remind him that they were regarded as outsiders even freaks to the world at large, but he had made them a family. He has given them a purpose in life and confidence to rejoice in who they are Our theme this year at the Thursford Songs of Praise is “As your family Lord, see us here” and I would like to think that Jesus makes us into a family, even though we are all very different, and that he has given us a purpose in life and confidence to rejoice in who we are, whatever other people might say about us. The Bible reminds us we are One Family – that there is no difference between Jews and non-Jews (i.e. whatever race we are, we are the one human race), male & female, slave or free (we might say today rich or poor) – for we are all one in Christ Jesus Yet it is not always easy being one family. All families have their fall outs and disagreements at times, and in our Bible Reading in Mark’s Gospel Jesus seems to be in disagreement with his family as his mother and brothers have to send someone in to call him. I believe it was out of love and concern for their son and brother that Mary and his brothers wanted to talk to Jesus, because they knew that he was making waves and that he had made some enemies who were looking to do whatever it would take to bring him down. What Mum or Dad, or sibling, would not want to keep their child or sister or brother safe? Yet Jesus seems not to go out to them, and instead looks at this group of people sitting in a circle around him, and declares that whoever does God’s will is Jesus’ mother, brother or sister.

Jesus says if you do God’s will you are a part of my family, whoever you are, and wherever you have come from. To help us understand his saying, we need the context in which it was said. Just before this the so-called Religious Experts had come to check Jesus out. Even though they saw all the good he was doing, the way he healed and helped people and the good thought provoking stories he told that made people think and hopefully changed their minds and hearts for the better; they concluded that he was only doing this because he was in league with the devil to do it. Sadly today there are still people who believe good is evil; and evil is good – we saw that last Friday week at the shootings in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand.People who want to divide us and play on prejudice and fear, who don’t want us to be one family. Doing God’s will is going the extra mile, including people the world excludes, speaking out against injustice, showing mercy love and forgiveness. In our broken and fractured world and even our own nation which is divided in many ways, we all have to work hard to remain united as one family Yet protecting your family can be costly. Another image from Jesus is that of a mother hen who when she sees danger protects her chicks under her wing so the predator attacks the mother rather than her young, or if a fire sweeps through the barn the mother may have to give her life so under her charred body the chicks survive The Easter Story is about Jesus who dies to protect and save all of us, and Rises again to show us the victory of love and life. Jesus invites all of us to be a part of his family, he will turn nobody away. What is stopping us from being a member of his family? Blessings

SCULTHORPE SCHOOLNEWSby Barn Owl ClassMad ScienceOn Mad Science day we went in the hall and met the scientist. She told us about the ooby balloony, the plasma ball and electricity. The plasma ball made my hair go up! We put on special glasses to see rainbows. We found that Isaac Newton made a prism which made a rainbow when white light shot through it. It was cool.Isaac (Y4)

World Book DayWe all dressed as book characters. At lunch time we had a Mad-Hatters Tea Party. We had a parade to show off our beautiful costumes. Matilda (Y3)

Norfolk OwlsThe school was visited by Norfolk Owls. Richard told us about the owls he had with him and why it is important to look after our countryside for the owls. We got to hold the owl that represents our class; either the little owl called Tiny, the barn owl called Smudge or the tawny owl called Tony. We were very lucky that the ‘Friends of Sculthorpe School’ paid for this visit, supported by the parents through fund raising.(Mrs Potter)

Red Nose DayOn Red Nose Day we collected money for charity. Red Nose Day is a day of donating for children that have difficulties such as homeless, no food and maybe no parents. We raised money by having a cake sale, wearing red clothes and buying red noses. We all helped raise £191 for Red Nose Day.Lily-May (Y4)

The Family Science AfternoonThere were 4 activities; building a paper tower, paper planes, the egg drop and foil boats. The ideas of the egg drop challenge was to drop the egg from the top of our A frame without cracking it. I especially enjoyed doing the egg challenge with my mum. We made a parachute from silk but my egg cracked so we tried a plastic bag, it worked! It was really fun and there were lots of activities.Kit (Y3)

Barn Owl Class Amazona TripBarn Owls went to Amazona Zoo because we were learning about the rain-forest. We saw lots of animals. We saw piranha and they were very creepy when they came near you. We went on the trampoline and every body kept falling off, it was so much fun. Then we saw a toucan, his been was very beautiful and wonderful.Amelia (Y3)

with the county council elections in May 2021.  Until then the parishes in the Wells Division will remain as shown at the end of this newsletter.  Parking Infringements: Easter approaches along with the understandable complaints from bus drivers about inconsiderate parking making a mockery of their timetable and from residents who struggle to leave their own driveway as a result of cars overlapping their exit. To help with the Running costs of the church we are having a tombola, cake and plant stall at the FAMILY DAY & FUN RUN event.

There is also the opportunity for any of you who would like a stall yourself to have one.

If anyone in Sculthorpe has anything that they would be able to contribute we would be very grateful.

My number is 853532, I can pick up items or they can be dropped off here.

We would be delighted if someone (or two) could help man a stall, we are running them in conjunction with the other Parishes but, unfortunately 2 out of 3 of us, in this one, are otherwise occupied that weekend so are unable to be there.
