In 1999, the international Friendship Radiosports Games (FRG) return toOregon to celebrate their loth anniversary. Competitors from Russia, Japan,and other countries will vie in events including CW sending and receiving, HFcontesting, and ARDF. The first international Region 11 ARDF Championshipwill be held in conjunction with FRG-99, with all of the IARU member societiesin North and South America invited to participate. The OTVARC Scholarship Committee willpresent the 1998 0TVARC Scholarship at theBanquet. They are pleased to announce theselection of Ryan L. Poteet, KC7TAK as thisyear's recipient.
Ryan became interested in Amateur Radiowhile very young, but did not know how to getinvolved. While working at the DamascusSafeway he began watching the parking lot forvehicles with unusual antennas. One day, hecarried out groceries for Jack Baldwin, K7CL,thus finding his Elmer and starting his ham radiocareer in earnest. He became licensed in 1996 andsoon upgraded to a General Class ticket.
Ryan, a Hoodview ARC member, is active-on HF and 2 meters. Heregularly checks into several nets, including ARES, enjoys pursuing DX andWAS, and is applying to MARS. He is the only ham in his family, but he`sworking on the rest of them.
Ryan is fascinated by all aspects of radio. He is a radio broadcasting major atMt. Hood Community College, and runs a weekly program on their cable accessradio station. He looks forward to a career in the broadcast industry and earningenough money to assemble an up-to-date amateur station.
In addition to his education and amateur radio pursuits, Ryan has beenactive in community relations with the Gresham Police department. Heparticipated in the Corrmunity Policing "Ticket to RIde" program by working onrestoration of a '56 0lds 88 into a hot rod police car. This involved building ashop and doing an extensive off-the-frame restoration. The car has wonnumerous awards and never fails to draw attention wherever it goes.

Jim is the resident astronomer at Table Mountain Observatory, TableMountain, California. Jim has worked for Jet Propulsion Laboratories for 35years in the Earth and Space Sciences Division.
Jim Young was first licensed as a Novice in 1956 and currently holds anextra class license. He is a life member of ARRL, QCWA, and Heard Island DXAssociation (Australia). Since 1987 Jim has served as NetAdministrator/Secretary of the Triple "H" Net, a 40m late night Worked AILStates organization. During a 1991 ascent of Mt. Whiney he was instrumentalin a life saving encounter at the summit with the use of ham radio with his wifeKaren..
Karen Young was first licensed in 1974 and now holds and Advanced classlicense. She is a member of RACES.
Karen has a BA in astronomy and an MS in physics and astronomy, She hastaught astronomy, physics and math at the high school and college level. Shecurrently teaches at Serrano High School in Phelan, CA. She has been active inamateur astronomy since 1970
