CHOICE BASED CREDIT SYSTEM (CBCS) GUIDELINESThe College has introduced CBCS system from the Academic Year 2012-13.

1. Program: Each branch of study (B.A/B.Sc / B.Com / BBM / BBA) and M.Sc is called a program.

2. Course: A ‘paper’ in the subject of study offered in a degree program is called a course.

3. Curriculum: The various components of each and every degree program that give appropriate teaching – learning experience are collectively called curriculum.

4. Credit(s): A numerical weightage given to each course of study based on the number of instructional hours and depth of teaching – learning experience.

5. Grade Letter (GL): GL is an index of the performance of a student in a particular course. It is awarded based on the actual marks secured by a student in a course. Grade Letters are O, A, B, C, D, E, F.

6. Grade Point (GP): GP is the weightage allotted to each Grade Letter assigned depending on the range of marks awarded in a course.

7. Credit Points (CP): CP refers to the product of number of credits multiplied by the Grade Point for a given course.

8. Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA): SGPA is the performance of the student in a given Semester, and is calculated based on the total credit points earned by the student in all the courses of the Semester and the total number of credits assigned to the courses in that Semester.

9. Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): CGPA refers to the Cumulative Grade Point Average weighted across all the six semesters for UG Programmes and IV Semesters for P.G. Programmes

Grading System

The student’s performance in a course (paper), and the program, is calculated by the following procedure:

(a) The answer scripts are valued and marks are awarded, as per rules. The student is deemed to have earned the allotted credits provided, she obtains minimum pass marks prescribed for that paper.

(b) The total marks obtained (Internal + External Examination) in each course are then converted to Grade Letter (GL) as per the approved conversion table. Each GL is given a pre-determined weight called Grade Point (GP) in ascending order from F to O.

(c) Credit Points (CP) are calculated for each course (paper) by multiplying the credits earned in that paper with GP determined for that paper.

(d) SGPA is calculated at the end of each Semester by the given formula.

(e) CGPA is calculated at the end of the entire program by the given formula.

Award of Grade for Theory and Practical Papers

Note: For practical papers, a minimum of 50% is the pass mark. Therefore, for practical papers <50% marks i.e. E and F grades are Fail Grades. The rest of the table is valid as such.

Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) & Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

SGPA indicates the performance of a student in a given Semester. SGPA is based on the total credit points earned by the student in all the courses and the total number of credits assigned to the courses in a Semester (The number of credits assigned may vary from one Course to another). SGPA is computed only if the candidate passes in all the courses (gets a minimum E 5 Grade points).

CGPA indicates the performance of a student in the entire program. CGPA is based on the total credit points earned by the student in all the Semesters in the program. CGPA is computed only if the candidate passes in all the prescribed courses of all the Semesters and gets a minimum E grade in all the Theory courses and D grade in Practical courses.

SGPA and CGPA shall be calculated separately for I and II Parts (Languages andCoreDisciplines).ThefinalmemorandumofmarksreflectstheendSemester memorandum of marks for all the Semesters, the CGPA and the Division.

The following is the step by step process of calculation of Grade Points, Credit Points and Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

The percentage of marks shown in the Award of Grade is the marks secured by the student in the Internal Assessment and End Semester Examination put together.

Total Credit Points earned for the Course = No. of Credits assigned for the Course multiplied by Grade Point secured for that course.
