Mike Boom, Daniel Brount, Lester Caramba and Rebecca Way were named National Merit Commended Scholars.
National Merit Michelle Issen and Ben Reiff, as members of the District 214 Education Academy, were named two of the 135 Golden Apple Scholars in Illinois.

WHS students enrolled in the National Italian High School Contest Examination for the first time this year. Among the 5,514 students taking it, Mayra Ocampo placed 12th, Daniela Miranda placed 15th, and Rebeca Barbosa placed 18th.

When taking the National Spanish Exam, Kelly Mendez, Yoli Rosendo, Jocelyn Torres and Megan Vasey earned Honorable Mention. Rebecca Way earned a Bronze Award.

AVID’s seniors will be the first AVID group to graduate from WHS.

The accounting team took first in Harper’s Accounting Competition for the second year in a row. Seniors on the team inclued Tyler Amodeo, Joe Bauer, Lisa Buresh, Brandon Fox, Nick Kopala, Zoeb Salehbhai, Jenna Schwartz and Michelle Issen.

Math Team qualified for State for the first time since 2009. At State, Amanda Peterson and Abid Khan placed eighth in the oral contest. Other senior qualifiers include Andrew Jensen, Yogi

Crucial Step Clique claimed first in the Illinois Drill Team Association State Championship three years in a row. They were State champions in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

Girls’ Basketball
Kellie Kuzmanic received recognition as part of the Daily Herald All-Area Team.
Girls’ Volleyball
When girls’ basketball took third place in State in 2009, Kellie Kuzmanic was part of the team. This year, as IHSA Regional and Sectional Champions, they were the first team in history to make Super Sectionals with a losing record. Kuzmanic was named to the Daily Herald All-Area Basketball team.
As members of the varsity wrestling team, Igor Romanowski and Eddie Scanlon qualified for State.

The varsity boys’ water polo team concluded their season as East Division Co-Champions.

Girls’ Track
Boys’ golf set a new record for WHS’s best MSL Conference place by placing fourth this year, beating the fifth place they got in 2009. Michael Taylor received all-Conference honors.

Colleen Creech-Woolcott broke the school Pole Vault record with a height of 9’9”.
During sophomore year, varsity cheer competed at State. Rachel Albrecht and Charlene Figueroa performed while Felicia McGuinn, Mayra Ocampo and Jenna Schwartz were alternates.
