Raiders,
Eid Mubarak (Blessed Eid)! We recently celebrated the end of Ramadan with the holiday of Eid al-
Fitr. For the Muslim world this is a three day celebration where locals host large family gatherings and community festivities. It turned into a
week long holiday here. We have never seen the locals as happy, well-dressed, or energetic as during Eid. We are now resuming our regular
partnerships and getting back to work in Nangarhar.
In that same spirit, we hope everyone back home enjoye d their Labor Day weekends. We had an outstanding spread of food on Monday grill
up by Dakota Troop. Anytime they want to mark a holiday with a BBQ, we are happy to support them and indulge in some good eating. Regu
lar missions continue as all of the Troops have been conducting operations to secure Eastern Nangarhar. Apache Troop has incr eased their
operations to interdict criminal elements and corrupt tribal leaders. This is a result of their efforts that greatly reduced at tacks by insurgents
along our main highway and across their area of operations. Blackfoot Troop has done a superb job establishing and running a Platoon comb
outpost and establishing rule of law and trials in one of our main districts. They've done all this while inheriting more battlespace from a tra
ferred unit. Comanche Troop changed mission sets without missing a beat, as they received several new districts and key leaders. We antici-
pate more great things from them as they get their feet wet in some areas new to the Squadron. Dog Compa ny continues to expand Govern-
ment of Afghanistan influence and security to isolated tribal areas, while working superbly with an Afghan Border Police battalion. HHT cont
ues to improve FOB Shinwar, with the expansion of Soldier housing and improvements to force protection. Dakota Troop continues to condu
resupply operations across the Squadron area of operations, while sustaining the force on FOB Shinwar. Finally, Pawnee Company, continue
to partner with several of our main districts, implementing gover nance programs to increase services to the Afghan people whi le simultane-
ously tearing down a platoon combat outpost. It is not all good news unfortunately. Heavy rains hit FOB Shinwar in the past few weeks, send
ing a flashflood river through our slightly downhill FOB. While the rains were welcomed by local farmers, several of our buil dings saw severe
leaking and some had standing water. Everyone told us that Nangarhar is so warm it doesnt snow during the winter months. What is now
clear though, is we can expect heavy rains instead. After a summer of 110 degree plus heat though, we will welcome the seasonal change.
I want to take a moment to say goodbye to CPT Dan Smith, our outgoing Blackfoot Troop Commander, and his wife Maybright. Dan has done
fantastic job as Troop Commander over the last 16 months, and Maybrights support to our Troopers through the Family Readiness Group ha
been equally great. As I stated in my many comments about Dan, the Squadron will always seek to improve the greater Army by letting our
best leaders go. With the change I want to congratulate CPT Grant Speakes and his wife Christy, our incoming Command team. CPT Speakes
a seasoned veteran with multiple, previous deployments. He was also our assistant Operations Officer before taking command of Blackfoot
Troop. He is off and running as the new Blackfoot 6 and we all wish him the best.
Finally, I hope everyone back home is geared up for football season. Our S6, communications shop has gone to great lengths to set up Armed
Forces Network connections in our Soldier housing. We ran so many connections, we ran out of cable and were short on some of our senior
leaders barracks. Fortunately, the dining facility will be open during gamedays. Also, across our Squadron we are gearing up for College Pick
em and Fantasy Football, creating a little friendly competition amongst our ranks. I look forward to providing more updates as we transitio
out of the summer season and into the winter season here. Local farmers will harvest their summer crops, the weather will cha nge, and our
mission will certainly change with it. However, we are ready to adapt, fight, and win as we always have. Thank you for all th e support and we
wish you all the best.
Prepared and Loyal,
LTC Jerry Turner

Aloha friends and family!
The month of August was the
Islamic holiday Ramadan. Dur-
ing the month almost all af-
ghans are fasting, not eating or
even drinking water during the
daytime. They are only al-
lowed to eat once the sun goes
down. The holiday ends with a
big celebration meal known as
Eid, where the kids get gifts and
new toys similar to our Christ-
mas. Our Afghan partners were
able to spend time with their
families during the holiday and
was a slow month for activity
across our area.
Since the end of Ramadanthe month of September was
busy with significant activity
and a resurgence of attacks
from insurgents looking to get
in a last victory before the
summer
fighting
season ends and many go back
to Pakistan. The Troop contin-
ues to be aggressive in each of
our 4 districts of Bati Kot, Kot,
Achin, and Nazyan.
1st and 2nd Platoon have
increased their security patrols
in Nazyan and Achin focusing
on partnering with the Border
Police and Afghan Army, iden-
tifying large fields of marijuana
crops in Southern Achin, and
disrupting insurgent movements
in Southern Nazyan. These two
border districts will become
much less kinetic as the winter
weather comes and the moun-
tain passes close.3rd Platoon has picked up an
additional district with Kot. So
they are patrolling both Bati
Kot and Kot. They have helped
with facilitating a road clear-
ance project from storm dam-
age in Kot and the Troop re-
cently setup a computer
center in the northern
area of Bati Kot. 3rd
Platoon continues to
focus on the Afghan
police and keeping
them patrolling and
interacting with the
people.
Finally, the Squad-
ron ran in the Stephen
Siller Tunnel to Towers
Memorial Run here in
Afghanistan in remem-
brance of those lost on
September 11th. It was
a wonderful opportunity
for us to reflect on whywere here and we
thank all of you for
your support of our
mission.

Dakota Family and Friends,
We hope this letter finds you well. Life in eastern Nangarhar continues to keep us busy anreasonably comfortable, but you are constantly on our minds. The proud Troopers of Dakota Troop
have successfully and safely completed another month of their deployment. As August 2011 come
a close, the Soldiers are excited to be one step closer to their families.
The most exciting event of the month was the opening of the Dining Facility Extension,
which enabled twenty-four operations. This was a huge morale boost for the squadron, in particula
those Soldiers who work the night shift or come in from a long patrol late at night. The cooks now
provide sandwiches and snacks at any hour. Many Soldiers had a hand in the construction and dec
tion of the facility. Painted in the customary red and white, the facility also emphasizes our unit hi
tory with many photos of Raiders in past conflicts in addition to pictures of our current team. Our
cooks at outlying bases continue to provide for the nourishment and morale of Soldiers in the far
reaches of Nangarhar province.
The distribution platoon continues to operate at a very high tempo, constantly delivering r
supply and preparing for the next push. The platoon has been essential in establishing support tolatest key terrain district outpost for Apache Troop at Bati Kot as well as helping Comanche Troop
relocate to FOB Connolly in western Nangarhar.
Maintenance platoon has conducted several recovery missions throughout eastern Nangarh
to ensure our fellow Raiders safe return to the base. The platoon is looking ahead to the winter
months and starting to prepare for the challenges of rainy and cooler weather and the temperature f
nally drops to the double digits.
The troop has maintained a high standard for training throughout the month by running se
eral ranges between missions and instituting a thorough NCO development program in our fleeting
hours. However, the junior leaders and Soldiers of Dakota remain intently focused on the mission
while tirelessly committing themselves to the support of TF Raider.
As you tear another page off the calendar, know that your Soldiers are safe and proud to s
their country nearly ten years after the tragic events that began this war. We thank you for all yoursupport and wish you the best as you humbly serve this fine unit in the rear of our formation. Maha
and aloha.

Aloha to all the families back in Oahu and on the Mainland. As the month of Septembe
is coming to a close, Hellfighter Troop continues to be busier than ever. The Troop has
participated in dismounted patrols in the local villages around the FOB, the SSP is continuing
to conduct operations to support the Command Group, the TOC is command and controlling
numerous operations, and all Soldiers are taking part in force protection for FOB Shinwar.
Wed like to address some rumors that have been brought to our attention, with th
first being HHT moving locations in Nangarhar. Currently there are plans that some elemenof HHT will move to different FOBs in order to support Squadron Operations. This will have
little impact on living conditions for your Soldiers. The next topic is redeployment; as of righ
now, our Troop is scheduled to be deployed for 365 days in Afghanistan. This means that hi
or her date begins upon arrival into Afghanistan, not the day he or she flew from Schofield
Barracks. If there are any changes to either of these topics they will be published through th
FRG or rear detachment.
We know redeployment is still six months away, but please ensure that the HHT FR
Leader (Cady Sunsdahl) has accurate contact information. This contact information is used f
the monthly newsletter and any pertinent FRG information. It will also be used to inform yo
on flight times and updates to ensure families are present to welcome home their Trooper.
Please check out the upcoming FRG Events and meetings for the upcoming months.
Lastly wed like to thank the families and FRG for their continued support.
Sincerely, CPT Sunsdahl and 1SG Hill
