Multiple chart-topping albums, a stack of sonic variations, and a newfound inspiration, Guy Sebastian is (re)writing the tale of a meme-friendly Idol
contestant. Words by Peter Tuskan.
What happens in Bali stays in Bali – unless you’re Guy Sebastianof course, whose recent retreatto the island was the birthplace
of a stack of all-out radio hits waiting to happen.
He wrote so many bangers in Bali, in fact, that halfway through the interview he remembers one that completely slipped his mind – and consequently, off the final track list.
“I totally forgot about that song and I didn’t put it on the album!” he laughs, making a mental note to ensure the neglected track gets released one way or another soon.
Fourteen years after triumphing on the first season of Australian Idol, Sebastian is the only Australian male artist in ARIA Charts history to achieve six number one singles - the last being 2012’s Lupe Fiasco collaboration ‘Battle Scars’ - which went 9x Platinum in the country.
Only Delta Goodrem (eight) and Kylie Minogue (ten) can claim more overall.His new single, ‘High On Me’, sees Sebastian emulate the sounds of past successes - a thumping, falsetto-glazed, Prince-sounding number with a distinct throwback nod to ‘Like It Like That’.
Taken from his upcoming 10th studio album, Conscious - due out in early October - Sebastian admits that the soulful earworm came complementary with some much needed life lessons.
“‘High On Me’ was the first thing that came out of my mouth,” he recalls of the six day sessions, which also spawned the tracks ‘Set In Stone’ and ‘Mind On You’ from 2016 EP Part 1.
“I needed to write something that was fun, that was literally about doing nothing. I get a fair bit of anxiety about doing nothing and I feel like I always have to be learning stuff or finding new sounds and synths, so this song has ended up meaning quite a bit to me.”
Longtime partner-in-crime M-Phazes (aka Mark Landon) produced the track, and what
Sebastian has three #1s to his name on the TMN Hot 100
dating back to 2010 (‘Like It Like That’, ‘Battle Scars’, ‘Like
A Drum’)
Having released eight Top 10
albums in Australia, Sebastian’s first seven albumsgained either Platinum or
Multi-Platinum certification.

Previously, M-Phazes has steered the ship on a handful of Sebastian’s biggest commercial hits in the past, as well as Amy Shark’s ‘Adore’ and Illy’s ‘Catch 22’.
“He’s got this really good way of making something sound really punchy, but still retaining the sensibility of it all. He doesn’t push it to a place of obscurity, he still keeps it pop, understandable and palatable."
Sebastian took a step back from the noise during the three-year frame after the release of Madness in an effort to approach his art differently – working to master Nat King Cole tunes on the piano and get back to basics.
“I’ve gone away and totally switched software and instruments," he tells TMN. "I’ve even
just got a piano teacher just recently.
“There’s a danger in not self-reflecting as an artist - I needed to stop and fall in love with music again."
While the singer has embraced a free approach to music and life in general, Sebastian is the first to admit his mastery and mentality has shifted dramatically since starting out in 2003, and for the better.
“I feel like only in the last couple of years I’ve really figured out [my] artistry,” he started. “I went into a TV show and got spat out the other side and I had the mentality of ‘don’t screw it up’.
“I needed that time to go, ‘Can I truly say at the end of this project that I gave everything to this on an artistic level, that I stretched myself and pushed the boundaries?’”
For Sebastian, the chance to release another album and depart on an upcoming Australian tour in November proves that he's taken many more good steps than bad along the way.

It’s a momentous week on the TMN Hot 100 for two of the music industry's biggest female stars.
P!NK claims her 14th #1 single on the chart as ‘What About Us’ eclipses Liam Payne’s ‘Strip That Down’ ft. Quavo after a solid run of six weeks at the top. Her first ever #1 dates back to a decade ago, when ‘Who Knew’ was the top dog for a solitary week.
Taylor Swift has achieved the highest ever debut in Hot 100 history, landing at #2. 'Look What You Made Me Do' beats the previous record held by Harry Styles' 'Sign Of The Times' at #3.
Shawn Mendes sees a slight resurgence to #6 this week as Justin Bieber & Bloodpop’s ‘Friends’ climbs 13 spots to nestle itself in the Top 5.
There are small falls across the Top 10 this week with DJ Khaled’s ‘Wild Thoughts’, Niall Horan’s ‘Slow Hands’ and Rita Ora's ‘Your Song’ all slipping towards the edge of the top tier.
It’s straight to the top for Guy Sebastian with new single ‘High On Me’. The funkiest track he has put out to date, it’s a solid shift in musical direction and ought to have him in the Top 10 of the Hot 100 in no time. The track is produced by Louis Schoorl and M-Phazes (which explains why it sounds so huge).
OneRepublic & Seeb have a banger on their hands with ‘Rich Love’, while Khalid will try to crack commercial once more with the stellar ‘Young, Dumb and Broke’. New singles from Ricki-Lee and Maroon 5 will turn heads, though Maroon 5 has already seen some early adoption in the past week from the Hit Regional Network, limitiong their chances of a #1 Most Added for next week.
When Taylor Swift’s ‘Look What You Made Me Do’ isn’t setting Hot 100 records, it’s topping the Most Added chart. At #1 with 75 additions, the adds it received dwarf anything else at radio for the week. Thirty Seconds To Mars’ ‘Walk On Water’ and Maroon 5’s ‘What Lovers Do’ ft. SZA make up the bulk of the remaining big additions.
The last time Swift appeared on the Most Added chart was with ZAYN on their collaboration track ‘I Don’t Wanna Life Forever’, taking #1 for the week.
Logic and Snakehips & Anne-Marie's collaboration both make their way in off the back of Ash London LIVE additions with ‘1-800-273-8255’ and ‘Either Way’ respectively.

12 months ago, Australian born, Multi-platinum record produce/songwriter, Mark J Feist discovered Tash from her covers on Instagram. Mark Feist had just started a record label with his oldest and dearest friend; Australian business man Mark Finn, whose eldest daughter, Kate, brought Tash’s Instagram account to both Mark’s attention. They immediately signed her to their new label Hitmakers Entertainment and began recording Tash’s debut album in Los Angeles, where Tash is writing every song. Tash comes from a musical family, her mother is a guitar teacher and her father a bass player. With all that music around her, it was only natural that Tash started playing guitar and songwriting at an early age. Tash has spent the last 12 months in the studio recording in Los Angeles and while being in America she also has done many acoustic performances.
2017 is set to be an amazing breakout year for this young Australian talent, who has already garnered over 440,000 Spotify streams of 'Lil Love Song'.

AUSTRALIAN & ALTERNATIVE ARTISTS
Winner of Unearthed High 2017, Arno Faraji is appearing all over this week's Australian and alternative charts. His track 'Destiny's' comes in at #1 on the Alternative Hot 100, #4 on the triple j Hit List and #2 on the triple j Unearthed chart. Faraji's other tracks 'Tree'x' and '130 Ego Jump' are also sitting at #3 and #5 on the triple j Unearthed chart, respectively.
Nigerian-born artist Kah-Lo has debuted on the TMN charts with her single 'Fasta'. Currently sitting at #5 on the Alternative Hot 100 and #3 on the triple j Hit List, the track has already passed 100,000 streams on Spotify.
OVERVIEW
The album opener creates a perfect mood with sing along melodies, head bopping guitars, loud drums and a dizzying array of synth-work. This infectious anthem follows on from the Brisbane band’s earlier singles ‘Is It Love’ and ‘Everybody Knows’.
Recorded in Melbourne over multiple sessions with producer Malcolm Besley (Northeast Party House, City Calm Down), Tremolow bursts with bright, Brit-pop infused jams that are soaked in lush retro soundscapes. The Creases are stepping out on the Tremolow Tour this month for a run of capital city dates. Their taut live sets blend raucous rock n roll with shining pop, delivered with the honest confidence of a young act on the rise.
