News from Elham Primary School
Following a wonderful summer break, we are back at school and raring to go for another year full of success and
excitement. Our values run through everything we do at Elham Primary School –
Humility, Perseverance, Forgiveness, Faithfulness,
Wisdom and Kindness
During the learning journeys of both our children and staff, we look at ways to demonstrate these values as often
as possible. We are always looking at ways to support the local community and plan for each class to show
kindness with a project they can develop that will help the children learn while supporting others. If you have any
ideas of how the school can help in the village or surrounding area please let the school office know.
World War 1 Centenary. To commemorate the centenary of the end of WW1, the whole school will be
carrying out projects linked to this important event. We will be making ceramic poppies for each member of the
Elham community that gave their lives for our freedom. We will be completing other projects and work during
term one and will be opening our school on Friday 9th November to share what we have done with you. If you
would like to visit, please contact the school office.

Sir John Williams Trust, Elham – Further Education Grants
This is the time of the year when some young people of the Parish are looking forward to furthering their studies away from
home as they embark on their chosen course of further education at college or university, a time when funds can be stretched
almost beyond bounds in setting up courses with books and equipment that are considered necessary to ensure a smoother
learning experience. This is a time when a grant, however small, can be put to good use and perhaps allow the purchase of
books or equipment previously seen as beyond available funds.
The Sir John Williams Trust may be able to help if approached and you can apply in the following manner:
You must supply a curriculum vitae together with full details of the course of studies to be followed, degree or qualification
being sought and the establishment being attended plus any other information that may be useful to the Trust in dealing with
your application. The application letter must then be endorsed by a parent or guardian verifying the information given. For
repeat applications for grant, ie further years of study where a previous grant has been given, it will be necessary to provide a
report of the previous year’s studies in as much detail as possible together with achievements and exam results and how these
will satisfy the overall course objective, a cv will also be required where one has not previously been supplied and again with a
parent or guardian endorsement verifying the accuracy of the application. An application may be returned for completion if
any of the above requirements are missing.
The Trust will be meeting in October this year to consider applications and this is the main grant meeting of the year when
the Trust expects to make the bulk of its grants within its available budget, applications received after this meeting apart from
having to wait until the Trust next meets will also be dependent upon the Trust’s then available funds.
The Trust is not bound to make a grant and cannot if it is not satisfied that the application or applicant is within its remit and
the Trust scheme.
Applications should be sent to the Clerk to the Trustees, Mr K H London, Sir John Williams Trust, 17 Fairfield, Elham by the
24th September, should you have any query not covered by the above information please do not hesitate to telephone for
advice at 01303 840440.

You may have seen the film Florence Foster Jenkins on TV last month; now come and see the play which is
hilarious. Rehearsals have begun for our production of Glorious the true story of Florence Foster Jenkins. She may have
been known as ‘the world’s worst opera singer’ but to those that knew her this society dame was a warm,
generous and heroic figure who did not believe in letting her lack of talent stand in the way of fulfilling her dreams.
She packed the Carnegie Hall to the rafters singing her very own unique versions of classic operatic arias. Join
Lyminge Dramatic Society in celebrating the life of this remarkable women and enjoy a glorious evening from
the 14th to the 17th November at Lyminge Village Hall starting at 7.30pm.
This month we have another plays in the pub evening on Wednesday 19th September. Grab a drink from the bar
and join us at 7.30pm on 19th September in the back room of the Coach and Horses in Lyminge. As always a very
relaxed and enjoyable evening.
What a fantastic afternoon we had for the Summer Party on 26th July. The sun was out, the sky was blue, there
wasn’t a cloud to spoil the view - all there was were plenty of yummy sandwiches, pastries and delicious cakes all
washed down with sparkling wine followed by the obligatory cuppa. We couldn’t have wished for a better day,
there was even a raffle - and if anything it was too hot! Many, many thanks to Judith and Mike for once again
letting us have the use of their beautiful garden. Unfortunately the proposed trip to Dover Castle on 9th August
was rained off. See you all on 13th September when Alex Clifford gives a talk ‘Wild about Flowers’, 2.30pm in St
Mary’s Church Hall.
Lorri Newman
The Life of a Vet was the subject of our talk in July when Tony Barnes, who has recently retired, kept us amused
with tales of his time as a vet over 52 years and also spoke of the changes in the profession during that time. The
competition was won by Molly Walker with Margaret Chambers 2nd, Connie Burren 3rd and Pat Kent 4th.
On the 26th September we welcome back John and Jane Buss telling us about the Fabian Ware War Graves. We
meet at Rhodes Minnis Village at 2pm., and warmly welcome visitors (1st visit free!). For further details please
contact 01303 862913.
RHODES MINNIS CIRCLE
The speaker at the 28 June meeting was Jude Lawton who talked about ferns. It was a fascinating evening - I think
most of us can recognise half a dozen ferns - Jude showed us pictures of many, some very beautiful and unusual.
Altogether a very entertaining evening. On 19 July Gerry Newman gave a pictorial resume of the Society’s recent
trip to visit gardens in Dorset.
The speaker at the meeting on 20 September will be Janine Doulton who will talk about gardening in shade.
In October we will be holding our Autumn Coffee Morning and Bulb Sale, so it is not too early to start planning for
Spring planting. In early November we have the Annual Dinner. Watch this space for details.

Notes on the Minutes of the Elham Parish Council Meeting on Monday 4 July
The minutes of the June meeting were adopted and signed.
To Agree to have agendas and other documents sent by email
The locum clerk explained it is now considered best practice to send out documents etc by email providing that the Council
agreed to this each year. She could find no Minute of this taking place. A brief discussion took place and after being proposed
and seconded, it was unanimously agreed that all documents would be sent electronically. However Councillors who do
not have access would have documents sent by post or hand delivered.
To consider and agree any proposals to mark the end of WW1
A letter from the vicar was read out. It was outlining a proposal by various groups in the village that were coming together to
remember the fallen during WW1 which marks the centenary of the end of the war. A debate took place. After being
proposed and seconded it was agreed that the cost of two ‘Tommies’ would be donated to the group. It was further agreed
that the PC will arrange the road closures for the Remembrance Service as is the normal practice.
Public Session
A member of the public reported that he had been involved in an accident. The other person involved had been unaware of
the ‘give way’ junction due faded white lines. The chairman said he would contact KCC Highways in the morning to get the
white lines reinstated. Faint white lines were also at other junctions. There was overgrown foliage around give way signs.
Finance
The following invoices were agreed:
Zurich, insurance £579.84
L. Robins, internal audit £100
G. Clements, reimbursement £16.20
Wraights, tree work £384
To Note Receipt of Standing Order and Agree Adoption
The Standing Orders had been previously circulated. In addition there had been a statement about training and it was further
agreed this should read that Councillors will attend at least one training session within their four year tenure. After a short
debate it was agreed to accept and adopt the Standing Orders. The locum clerk was asked to adjust the wording to
accommodate the updated information and recirculate.
Interviews to fill Vacancy of Clerk
It was agreed to set up a committee for the interviews and agree dates.
Updates from June Meeting
Three councillors attended the Burial ground clean up which went very well. The District Councillor has offered to purchase a
much needed bin for the Burial Ground. There was no list for the community Asset List; a request for residents to put
forward properties they think should be listed will be placed on Facebook.
Councillors Reports
A retired Councillor, George Crow has sadly passed away, he had been a Councillor for over 20 years. Road markings - lines
and junctions and some street sweeping will be requested. There has been some inappropriate parking near the war memorial.
It was noted that the Speed sign has not been working properly and will be investigated.
District Councillors report
The renaming of Shepway to Folkestone and Hythe District Council (F&HDC). There was a consultation taking place on
Otterpool Garden Town, residents were encouraged to submit comments. The application for Princes parade has been
received. There has been an increase of incursion of travellers camping unlawfully on private and local authority land. The Leas
Pavilion has fallen into disrepair.Susan Carey KCC Councillor is arranging a Nailbourne ‘stream clean’ on 22nd September.
To Discuss Heads of Terms on Open Spaces
This was held in camera. A discussion took place and it was agreed that the locum clerk will produce a report on the pros and
cons of taking on any land in the village and this will be circulated for a later meting.
The meeting closed at 9.30.
Elham Village Hall, room hire £10
Methodist Church, room hire £10
KALC, Annual subscription £610.70
Donation for WW1 remembrance £84
Unfortunately it is not possible to produce the Draft Notes of the Minutes
of the Meeting held on Monday 6 August, due to lack of space in this
Newsletter and the fact there was no August issue.

Elham Residents’ Association
(ERA)
Mobile Telecoms
At the inaugural, Annual General Meeting (AGM), on
4th July, ERA agreed to take responsibility for seeking
improvements to the mobile telephone reception in
the parish, and I agreed to take the lead on this. At the
end of that meeting, a couple of people volunteered to
lend a hand, but I would really like to form a small
team to take this forward and to share ideas. If you
would like to part of this team, please do get in touch.
I received a great hand-over, on 17th July, from
Andrew Joynes, who had previously led some useful
work on this, with a group of concerned, local
residents. I would like to thank Andrew for the hand-
over and all of his efforts to date. Since then, I have
written to Damian Collins MP, Mobile UK and Ofcom.
Damian agreed to chase up the mobile telephone
operators, who had promised, at a meeting in January,
to do a re-assessment of mobile telephone coverage in
Elham. EE has, subsequently, been in touch to say that
it has conducted a ‘drive test’ and will soon be in
touch again about a way forward. I intend to put
pressure on the other providers if I do not,
imminently, hear from them. Ofcom has expressed its
support for our initiative and has asked to be kept
informed of progress.
Perhaps as a team we could both survey parishioners’
experience and views and/or carry out our own
coverage survey across the different networks.
Your parish needs you. Please give volunteering your
serious consideration. I look forward to your contact.

Royal British Legion – Great Pilgrimage 90 On 7 August last around 1100 Standard Bearers and 1100 wreath layers from branches of the Royal British Legion across the
country gathered in Ypres to mark the centenary end of the Great War of 1914-18. The date chosen was the actual
anniversary of the beginning of the final 100-day offensive by the allied armies which ended the war in November 1918. Since
April that year the allied armies had been on the retreat as they tried to resist the final great German offensive. Gradually
they halted the German advance and in August the last allied offensive which pushed the enemy back and broke the
Hindenburg line resulting in the German request for an armistice. One of the Standard bearers and the accompanying wreath
bearer was from the Elham Valley Branch of the RBL, representing all the people of the valley and remembering all the fallen
serviceman from the valley villages. Carrying our Standard was 17 year old Callum Balch, an Army Cadet and our branch
Standard Bearer, with his mother as his wreath bearer as he is under 18. Attached to the wreath was a poem written by one
of the children at Lyminge Primary School and the poem is reproduced here.
WW1 Memorial By James Hammond Yr. 6
We are here today to remember those who fought for England in The Great War.
They were great people who went through too much.
Death and destruction was all that they saw.
As we stroll down the Road of Remembrance, we remember the fight that they braved,
Throughout all of the carnage, there were lives that they saved.
The trenches were unsanitary and unliveable; it was Hell on Earth, not very nice,
Soggy wet boots gave them ‘trench foot’, their clothes infested with lice,
But there was also camaraderie, friends, laughs, and most importantly, mirth.
Cleaning rifles and bayonets, all covered with earth.
The food provided for them on occasions was dire.
So disgraceful in fact that the mood would turn sour.
Yet with the horror and destruction of war came also kindness and laughter,
A country torn to pieces came together through tears, in spite of the surrounding disaster.
Never should we forget a single brave soul,
To save our country was the main goal.
We remember them with gratitude.
Lest we never forget,
Our Soldiers, Gone But Not Forgotten
ELHAM GARDENING SOCIETY ANNUAL TRIP TO DORSET Dorset – a most beautiful county which gained many more enthusiasts after the Elham Gardening Society tour in
June. The weather forecast was excellent so the group which met at the coach on the Thursday morning was in
great spirits. No problems with the M25, so all the omens were good.
Two of the highlights of the trip were the guided tours of Forde Abbey and Sherborne Castle; both were
historically unique and interesting, and both were full of beautiful furniture, pictures and in one case, remarkable
tapestries. Sherborne, with its links to Sir Walter Raleigh, will long linger in the memory. We have seldom
“done” houses before but these visits proved to be popular and enjoyable. A visit of a different type was to the
Church at Moreton Village, an area associated with T.E. Lawrence, who is buried nearby. The Church is
remarkable for the windows which, instead of the usual stained glass, were engraved by Sir Laurence Whistler.
The windows were beautiful in themselves and admitted a huge amount of light to the interior, leaving a lasting
impression of beauty and airiness.
The gardens and the Swannery at Abbotsbury were really enjoyed by all; who would have believed the fascination
of hundreds of large birds, accompanied by hundreds of grey youngsters of varying ages! That particular day
finished with a visit to Portland Bill – a first for many of us and most interesting.
I have to mention our coach driver, Duncan. A professional in every way but so thoughtful, friendly and patient.
He had some tough situations to face as we toured the narrow sunken lanes of inland Dorset, and he must have
wished us all back in Folkestone at times, but he remained calm and resilient. The last straw was an incident on
the M25, which added a couple of hours to our homeward journey, but even this did not faze him.
The Hotel in Weymouth was a bit different from those in which we’ve stayed in the past since it was almost
entirely a package holiday hotel, but it was comfortable, everything worked and the members of staff were
charming and helpful. The location could not have been better, right on the promenade; just cross the road to the
sea, and always some shipping to look at.
It was a thoroughly happy trip due, in no small measure, to the careful planning of Hugh Buckhurst. We look
forward to next year.

Proud trophy winners at Elham Gardening Society
Summer Show held on Saturday 28 July
ELHAM GARDENING SOCIETY SHOW REPORT Roger Frost beat his wife actress Pam Ferris by 3oz to win the hotly contested potato in a bucket competition at this year’s
annual Elham Gardening Society Show on Saturday 28 July. The two returned home laden with more than 18lbs of potatoes,
not a bad return from two tubers!
Despite this year’s heat and drought, competitors still managed to produce a magnificent show with vegetables and fruit,
flowers, floral art, domestic classes, handicraft, art and photography. Carole Kincaid secured the Yockletts Bowl for most
points in the Pot Plants classes, while Mike Donnelly walked away with four trophies and Maggie Newington won the trophy
for most points in the show. Her daughter Elizabeth maintained the family tradition by winning the Colonel’s trophy for
the best exhibit.
Newcomers Pauline Gladstone-Barrett won the most points in the Floral Art while her husband Steve took the Rupert Trophy
for his chocolate brownies in the gentlemen only domestic exhibit. Chrissie and Tony Upson won the Harrowing Bowl for the
most pleasing garden and Chris Grenshaw received the Harrowing Cup for the best home garden/allotment. The children
showed great imagination in their displays. Emily Richards won the Thomas Trophy with most points while Beaumont Lester
took the Palmer Cup for his model car made from an egg box.
Do please join my District Council colleague, Stuart Peall and me at the annual Streamclean on
Saturday 22 September from 10am to lunchtime. We will be clearing the Nailbourne where it runs
behind Hog Green towards Duck Street. Equipment is provided but do bring a rake and wheelbarrow if
you can. No need to register, just turn up and make a difference.
Look out soon for a consultation on our Household Waste Recycling Centres. Kent has 16 of these and we are one of the
last places in the country still accepting soil, rubble and plasterboard all of which are not classified as household waste. We
are now getting significant inflows of such waste from across the County boundaries and the consultation is asking for views
on whether we should introduce a charge for this type of non household waste in line with neighbouring councils.
KCC has been awarded the Ministry of Defence Employers Recognition Gold Award for its support for ex-service
personnel and Reservists. We have an Armed Forces Covenant which commits KCC to ensure that serving personnel,
veterans and Reservists will not be disadvantaged in accessing our services as a result of serving in the military. There’s
more information about what this means in practice on our website (search for Armed Forces) as well as a calendar of
events across Kent which celebrate Kent’s military heritage.
A group of KCC councillors have been asked to look at the issue of loneliness and social isolation especially among Kent’s
older residents, they will be looking at whether KCC’s current service provision and partnership working is effective and
recommend improvements. Written submissions on this issue are invited and sent to [email protected] by
midday on Monday 10 September 2018. Once all the information has been considered, the councillors will produce a
report for consideration at a full county council meeting in early 2019.
Repairs to Kent’s 8,700km (5,400 miles) road network continue following further drawdown from our emergency reserves
to deal with the damage caused by the snow in March and flooding in May. Between 1 March and 10 August 47,943
potholes had been filled and 149,017 sqm of patching has been done. (For our district the equivalent figures are 4,635
potholes and 21,373 sqm of patching.) Do keep reporting potholes. You don’t need to know the name of the road as the
website www.kent.gov.uk has an interactive map where you can mark the spot or you can ring 03000 41 81 81 in office
hours and 03000 41 91 91 for emergencies. This was one of the issues discussed at the Elham Parish Council meeting on 06
August which I attended, as well as faded ‘Give Way’ markings on local roads. These too can be reported online as can
problems to roads and pavements caused by vegetation, streetlights out at night or on all day (day burners), there’s even a
category for reporting ‘Animals/pests – Dead – Bigger than a Badger’ and much more. Make sure you keep a note of your
reference number which will help in keeping track of progress.
I’ve no further news on the broadband voucher scheme but a launch is imminent and I will give details as soon as they are
known.

CHURCH MATTERS
Dear Friends
Just last summer I started to lead worship at some of the Elham Valley Group churches alongside other members
of Jane’s ministry team. During that time, I have had the privilege of meeting a much wider church congregation
population than before, and this has necessitated my visiting more of our lovely rural church buildings.
Many of you probably appreciate the beauty of these country churches, even if you choose not to attend services in
them. Their locations in tranquil sites, with ancient stone facades, and often a sense of timelessness, add to their
visual attraction.
However, I sometimes find that the exterior of church windows can be a little intimidating. In some lights they can
look like foreboding, bleak panels isolated in their surroundings of soft grey stone.
It is only on entering these churches that you can fully appreciate the beauty of those windows. As light enters
them from the outside, it highlights the stained-glass panels, bringing to life the colours and art of the depicted
image, only properly visible from the interior. Even in plain glass church windows, the light seems to flow in
through them, often creating soft pools of light inside.
However, it is not just the beauty of church windows that can only be properly comprehended from within. Only
inside can you fully hear renditions of the rich tradition of church music. Only by entering the building will you
realise that a warm welcome awaits you from those already there. Only by spending a little time inside can you find
an understanding of whether a particular church can offer you personally a space for reflection, comfort, or
company.
The value of these places does not lie, of course, in their visible attractiveness. It lies in their part in the worship of
God, as meeting places, and as areas for prayer and quiet. All these activities can and do take place anywhere and
everywhere. But when they occur as part of a communal action in a setting of inspiring beauty they offer an added
element.
We have a wealth of these precious spaces in our area: from the larger, historic grandeur of Lyminge or Elham, to
the small restful simplicity of Paddlesworth, or the hidden from view gems of Denton and Acrise. All these
churches offer some variations in approach to worship, but all share a desire to see more people coming in to join
them and to share with them the resources they offer.
So why not try some of them out this autumn!

KNIT AND NATTER
Poppies have been pouring in from all corners of the globe and we have lost the battle of trying to count them.
However, we have started attaching them to their strings so will have a good idea of how many we have when that
is done. The next Knit and Natter is on 4th September when we hope to launch our next project.
POPPY APPEAL
If you haven’t been able to help with the knitting but would still like to contribute to the Poppies for the church
Tower in some way, we are looking for donations towards the cost of the strings and tags and guns that we are
using to attach them. Donations can be handed to Janice or Val or put in an envelope marked ‘POPPIES’ in the
chest in church.

THE FRIENDS OF KENT CHURCHES RIDE AND STRIDE - Saturday 8th September
Participants plan their own routes with the assistance of a printed list of churches and chapels open on the day.
There are usually some 750 of these places of worship open, scattered right across the county, and wherever you
go you’ll be assured of a warm welcome. Don’t worry about carrying lots of food of drink as plenty is available at
the churches or lots of pubs en route! Ask your relations, friends and colleagues to sponsor you – so much per
church or chapel visited between 10am and 6pm on the day. This is recorded on a special sponsor form. 50% of
sponsorship money raised goes to the church or chapel chosen by the participant, with the other 50% going to the
Friends, who use it to help the neediest churches in the County. To register as a participant, or for further
information on the event email [email protected] or visit http://
friendsofkentchurches.co.uk/ride-and-stride. Sue and Mike Prebble from Acrise Church are taking part and will be
looking for sponsors! Acrise church will be open all that day and we would welcome any volunteers to man the
church for an hour or two.
