Singer-songwriter Kevin Welchperforms Sunday at DentonDomino Hall, a local alternative
venue that hosts house concerts. If he plays music that sounds like it’s
coated in red dust, it’s because he wasborn in California but moved toOklahoma as a kid.
Welch has been steadily recording asa solo artist since 1992. His latest, APatch of Blue Sky, rings with a spirituallonging that keeps his Americana hon-est and his gospel adventure true.
Welch’s teenage attraction to musiclanded him in a bluegrass band and asteady life on the road. In the late 1970s,Welch had enough of the road and madea beeline for Nashville, Tenn., where hestarted writing for Tree International. He wrote for 10 years, made and earneda living, and then started making hisown records. He and friends started alabel, Dead Reckoning, that’s turned outmore than 20 albums.
A Patch of Blue Sky is a mellow recordthat is long on heart and short on senti-mentality.
Denton Domino Hall is located off thebeaten path. For more informationabout the venue, visit www.dentondominohall.com. To make a reservationand for directions, e-mail [email protected].
Gates open at 4 p.m. Sunday, and theshow starts at 5 p.m. Admission is a sug-gested donation of $15.

Hailey’s Club features abevy of local bands onSaturday night.
It’s been hyped in thesepages before, but Denton’sPeopleodian offers enoughelectro-pop to keep toes tap-ping and enough originalityto keep you guessing. Theband is also one of a goodlynumber of Denton groups toearn a nomination in theDallas Observer MusicAwards.
The visuals are as impor-tant as the sounds inPeopleodian shows. Coloredlights and video images flitacross the stage. Singer AllyHoffman mixes the spirit
and girlishness of a 1940s-era cabaret singer with thepixie-imp flavors of Bjork.James Washington is themaster of the band’s sound-scape, giving it the computertreatment.
The Denton quartet plansto release its anticipateddebut album, It Woke theMoon, in October. We expectto hear something thatwould have been a worthysoundtrack to filmmaker EdWood’s adolescence.
The band shares the stagewith other local acts: Sorne,
Toy Bombs and SkeletonCoast. Details: Doors open at 9
p.m. Saturday at Hailey’s,122 W. Mulberry St. Cover is$5 for ages 21 and older, $7for those younger than 21.

Deja roof?By Boo AllenFilm Critic
It’s hard to take seriously amovie that begins with atitle reading “The world is
in chaos.” The opening notesfrom Killer Elite also state thatit is 1980, suggesting that, see,we’re no worse off now than wewere 30 years ago, an idea par-ticularly true when it comes tomindless action entertainmentsuch as this.
Even though it is allegedlybased, obviously quite loosely,on true events, Killer Elite is ahodgepodge of cliches of thegenre. A standard cat-and-mouse game sets up, and thentwo warring factions spend thebetter part of two hours hunt-ing down each other in routine, bloody fashion.
Two of the few surprises tocome out of Killer Elite are theassemblage and the displace-ment of talent. Notable actorsRobert DeNiro and Clive Owenappear, going through themotions as if they were on theirway to cash their checks, whichthey probably are. But boththese fine actors support JasonStatham, and, in the end, turnKiller Elite into simply anothermindless Jason Statham actionfilm, such as Crank or TheTransporter.
Here, Statham plays Danny, who has a job go wrong inMexico in the first scene. Hetells his partner, Hunter(DeNiro), that he is throughwith the business, setting upthe requisite “one last job” a
year later.Hunter falls captive to an
Oman sheik who forces Dannyto hunt down and kill three for-mer British secret serviceagents in London. The triokilled the sheik’s three sons insome earlier obscure MiddleEast conflict.
So, in a film devoid of goodguys, a laughable attempt ismade to give Danny an existen-tial crisis, one making him askhimself whether he has turnedimmune to killing, becomingpart of the Killer Elite who cankill with mental impunity.
Eventually, director GaryMcKendry, from a script basedon Ranulph Fiennes’ novel, suc-cumbs to the Statham machine. He dispatches with DeNiro andOwen, and lets Statham leadthe way in several fights, a carchase and a pursuit across roofs, ending with his jumping fromone to another — just like in anyother Statham film.
For fans of this genre, KillerElite may pass for an end-of-summer diversion, but it offerslittle to anyone else.
DR. BOO ALLEN is anaward-winning film critic forthe Denton Record-Chronicle.

Alligator meat will be served at Saturday’s Wild Beast Feast — in the form of alligator fritters, served up by a team from Jupiter House.
By Ellen Ritscher SackettFor the Denton Record-Chronicle
Meat lovers will be in hog, elk, buffalo, venison and alligatorheaven this Saturday after-
noon as local chefs prepare these andother exotic game dishes for this year’sWild Beast Feast.
This year’s event will take place at theUniversity of North Texas’ new ApogeeStadium before the Mean Green facesthe University of Indiana on the field.
The tailgating party is one of threeannual fundraisers for the GreaterDenton Arts Council, which providessupport to local arts groups. This year,16 cooking teams will compete for theBest of the Beast 2011 title — using onlyfood products that have beenFDA/USDA approved.
Winners receive bragging rights andan embossed belt buckle that reads “Bestof the Beast” and features the feast’s cow-boy armadillo mascot, Diller Dude. The2010 defending champion is Team Livin’the High Life, which includes Miller ofDenton employees Ryann Sandmannand Len Yarborough and son Hayden.
Sandmann calls it “a unique event”
that “gives you the opportunity to trydifferent cuisine that you aren’t going tohave anywhere else,” Sandmann said. This year, her team will serve grilled yel-low-fin tuna on a bed of rice with a gin-ger-mustard sauce.
Winners are determined by how
much money is stuffed into each team’stip jar — all of which is donated back tothe arts council.
Money for the arts council is also gen-erated from the proceeds from ticketsales and a silent and live auction. AdamReese will serve as auctioneer, and Thad
Bonduris and the Fun-Addix will pro-vide live music. Last year, according tothe arts council’s executive director,Margaret Chalfant, the event raisedapproximately $14,000.

fighting the Bastrop wildfires. Aaron Anderson of Meat
Guns calls himself a “WildBeast Feast rookie.” He andIsaac Hoskins, Ashley Benderand Jamie Marrs will serve uphog d’oeuvres: pork sausagetopped with a habañero-pineapple-cream cheese spreadand crispy, crumbled bacon forthe finishing touch — a combi-nation of “spicy, sweet andsalty,” Anderson said.
“I love cook-offs in generalbecause it’s always fun to com-pete for a year’s worth of brag-ging rights. But events like thisare also a great opportunity tolearn some new tricks from allthe great cooks that will bethere on Saturday,” said Ander-son. “[It] should be a great day.”
Caterer Gail Patterson and
her husband, Ricky, “the pitmaster,” are also newbies to theWild Beast Feast. The formerowners of Big Fatty’s On theSquare in Valley View arepreparing a beer-braised pecan-smoked seared boar belly onhot chili cheese grits with aapple jicama slaw garnish. Thedish features their “claim tofame” — the award-winningMistress Carlita’s SpankingRub, which is available for pur-chase at Central Market.
“There’s going to be someheat on this pork,” Pattersonsaid.
Denton Regional MedicalCenter employees Jeff Law-rence, Brandi Matous, NicoleBenson and Russell Mariottfrom Team Wild About HeartHealth are serving venison slid-
ers to demonstrate “how easyand delicious cooking heart-healthy can be, whether you arecooking wild game or tailgatingat a football game,” saidCourtney Kennedy, DentonRegional’s community develop-ment manager.
“Everyone who comes tosample the venison sliders willreceive a Heart Healthy Tail-gating guide,” she said.
Team Little Guys Movers, which includes Eric Eisen-mann, Jeff Barnard, BradSteiger and event co-chairmanMarcus Watson, is keeping itsentry a secret.
“We will be serving the juici-est, most tender, flavorfulmeaty morsels cooked in theyear 2011 in the WesternHemisphere. I am not at liber-ty to divulge any more details atthis point due to their propri-etary nature,” Barnard said. The Little Guys team will alsocook hot dogs that will be “freefor the asking.”
Randy Robinson and DonYork represent Team Access 1stCapital Bank. They’ve partici-pated in the Wild Beast Feastsince its inception.
“We’ll be serving pork spareribs and pulled pork sliders,”Robinson said. “We served thesame thing last year, and it was
a big hit.” “Besides providing support
for a great local organization, the Beast Feast attracts a broadspectrum of the community. Ithas evolved into a great com-munity event,” he said.
He noted that he’s glad thefifth annual feast will take placeat UNT’s new stadium, in con-junction with Saturdayevening’s game.
“Apogee Stadium is state-of-the-art, and a great place towatch a college football game,”Robinson said.
The Denton Rotary Clubteam, which includes ErnieMcGee, Sonja Rogers, PhilTammell and Ken Ingram, willbe preparing its beef brisket ina Big Green Egg, a ceramicsmoker that uses hardwoodcharcoal.
“Since this is my first event,I’m looking [forward] to expe-riencing what the Beast Feast isall about,” said McGee. “GoMean Green!”
Other teams participatingare Denton County Veterans,Wildwood Inn, Newland RealEstate/Rooster’s Roadhouse,Denton Sports and PhysicalTherapy, Wells Fargo Advisorsand The Arts Guild’s SweetTooth Booth, which will pro-vide dessert.

NOW PLAYINGContagion (1/2) The calm is
what’s so startling here, the cool pre-
cision with which Steven Soderbergh
depicts a deadly virus that spreads
throughout the world, quickly claim-
ing millions of victims. Matt Damon,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet,
Laurence Fishburne and Marion
Cotillard are among the stellar
ensemble cast, but Jennifer Ehle
nearly steals the whole movie from
them as a doctor racing to find a
cure. Rated PG-13, 103 minutes. —
The Associated Press
Cowboys and Aliens (1/2)
Daniel Craig stars as a disoriented
cowboy in the Old West who joins
forces with a local honcho (Harrison
Ford) to fight off an attack of aliens.
Director Jon Favreau takes his job
seriously and, except for small doses
of black humor, does his best to mix
the two genres. Rated PG-13, 118
minutes. — B.A.
Drive () Ryan Gosling stars as a
mysterious loner who drives cars for
movie stunts and the occasional
heist. Eventually, he tackles a doomed
robbery mainly for the love of a
woman (Carey Mulligan). After that
comes a series of violent and bloody
happenings. Nicolas Winding Refn
directed a compelling film reminis-
cent of many past similar films of the
genre. Rated R, 100 minutes. — B.A.
The Help (1/2) Tate Taylor directs
from Kathryn Stockett’s best-selling
novel about life in early 1960s
Jackson, Miss. All the young white
women except one (Emma Stone)
treat the African-American help atro-
ciously, particularly Aibileen (Viola
Davis). The excess of subplots may
mar the film’s rhythm, but they pro-
vide for an able supporting cast of
Allison Janney, Mary Steenburgen,
Sissy Spacek, Aunjanue Ellis and oth-
ers. Rated PG-13, 137 minutes. — B.A.
I Don’t Know How She Does It(1/2) When you’re a wife and
working mother, there’s this
inescapable, self-imposed pressure
to do everything right all the time.
Director Douglas McGrath finds just
the right tone in depicting this jug-
gling act, but too often smothers
those nuggets of insight with a jaun-
ty, sitcommy tone. It doesn’t help
that Sarah Jessica Parker chimes in
early and often with voiceovers that
sound exactly like the kinds of obser-
vations she used to make as Carrie
on Sex and the City. Rated PG-13, 91
minutes. — AP
