JUBILEE - YEAR OF MERCYThis week begins the Year of Mercy called for byPope Francis. In our world of hatred and heartbreak, this Year of Mercy is needed more than ever.Whenever a special year is called for by the Pope, itis begun by the Opening of the Holy Door. Thisusually takes place at St. Peter’s Basilica or St. John
Lateran in Rome or some other significant Catholic Church inthe world. To open the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis openedthe Holy Door at the Cathedral in Bangui in the Central AfricanRepublic. The Year of Mercy is inaugurated not in Vatican City, but in one of the poorest and most war-torn countries in theworld. The Prince of Peace comes not to the wealthy but to apoor family in Nazareth. Jesus goes first not to the powerful butto the powerless. God is a God of surprises—always goingbeyond our boundaries and always inviting us to the margins.Sisters and brothers, this is the embodiment of Mercy on aglobal scale and it is so important. Pope Francis continues toamaze us! But never forget that Mercy is available to all of uson every level of our lives. In our Diocese, Bishop Serratelli willbegin by opening two Holy Doors on Sun 12/13 - one at St.Margaret Church in Morristown and another at the diocesanShrine of St. John Paul II at Holy Rosary Church in Passaic. This year take advantage of Mercy everywhere you see it.Seek it out. Offer it. Let Mercy be the center of your life, because Mercy is God among us!

LITURGY CORNERThis week we celebrate the Feast of theImmaculate Conception, which is a holy dayof obligation. The Feast of the ImmaculateConception is celebrated on December 8th.So what exactly is the Feast of theImmaculate Conception? The Feast of the
Immaculate Conception does not celebrate the conception ofJesus, as some believe, but rather the conception of hismother, Mary. Catholics believe that Mary was free fromoriginal sin from the moment of her conception and thatthrough God’s grace, Mary remained sinless throughout her life. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception can be a wonderfulopportunity for families to talk about Mary and how we eachhave a specific job to do in welcoming and following Jesus.Have a blessed week! Lisa
FAITH AT HOMEHere is a suggestion for your family to celebratesome Advent Blessings. Keep an Advent blessingbook near your family creche. Each day of Advent,
gather as a family around the creche. After a short prayer (theHail Mary is great for Advent, but a spontaneous prayers workswell, too), have every member of the family write down oneway that they have been blessed that day. Don’t worry if youskip a day or two and forget to gather, but return to the practiceas soon as you are able. On the day before Christmas, read allthe blessings out loud. Save your book to be used next Adventor even bring it out at some point during the year to rememberthe blessings you experienced waiting for the birth of Christ.Enjoy your week! Lisa
