Blustery winds, Plaza lights taken down until next year, it’s February in Kansas City. I was hurrying from the
parking garage to meet friends at Ruth’s Chris as I passed the store windows filled with all the new "must haves".
A couple was shopping with their eyes. The coats were new and warm and their hair was trimmed to the latest style. As I passed I heard from the wife say, "Remember this time last year?" The way she said it told me it was not a fond memory. How could this seemingly affluent couple
have had problems? Was it a lost job or a stolen identity? A fire? A flood? A Katrina? A Sandy?
I had the sudden realization that this could have been me. We all will have setbacks. We will all need help at times.
Give to Harvesters so that they can help us all in our times of trouble.

From the Spirit into the spirit Of a human soul, A great mystery grows Beyond passion and ecstasy Toward realms of Divine transcendence - Love, definable, indefinable. Love is creativity, and mess, And pain, and fulfillment, and peace, A miracle, an enigma, more Than words can ever express. Love connects and holds spirits together With visible and invisible bonds. What love is not is obsession; What it is not is selfish intention. Love surrounds devastation, Moves amidst confusion, Brings comfort and order to chaos. Love celebrates with the joyful; Love sojourns with the lonely, Rejuvenates spent souls, Touches troubled minds, And lifts fallen hearts. Exquisite generosity, Love swaths needs In soft filmy gauze. Where God is, Love Is reaching, touching, doing, The ultimate consummation of hope. Vicki Ferris
Women’s Bible Study
Tuesday Morning How should one respond to trials? Are works more important than faith? What’s the result of sin? As we study the book of James, these study questions have led to our own provocative wonderings. What is evil? What’s the difference between being tested and being tempted? What’s the difference between Godly wisdom and worldly wisdom? Come join in our deep conversations and concerned prayers. We meet on most Tuesdays, from 9:30 to 11:00 am, in the parlor. You’ll be welcome!

The personnel committee is conducting evaluations of the Pastor and Choir Director

members to share Christmas carol cheer.
Stewardship
Dear Church Family, Thank you for the generous gift you gave me in worship yesterday. It was a wonderful surprise. I am truly privileged to be your pastor and to share life in Christ with you. I am thankful for your gift and for the gift of life together with each of you. Connie, January 21, 2013

2013 Stewardship Update As chair of the stewardship committee I am
delighted to inform you that the request to increase
the amount of pledges in order to provide funding to address some needed repairs or changes in the physi-
cal plant was met with a generous response. Mem-bers have increased their pledges tremendously for
2013. The increase was more than 13%, which has made it possible for an increase in our budget in or-
der to address some of our needs. The total funds from the pledges was $209,000 and, with oral pledges that were made, additionally increased the amount to
$220,000. I am also pleased to inform you that there was
approximately $20,000 remaining from last year’s funds after all the bills had been paid for the 2012
year. It is expected that these funds will be utilized eventually for the major changes or repairs needed for our physical plant, most likely for the heating and
cooling system in the south wing. The session will address the changes in due course.
Again, I wish to thank every member of our congregation for the outstanding contributions made
for our 2013 year and look forward to continued pro-cess of carrying out God’s work of bringing the un-saved to salvation by our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Yours in Christ, Jim Durig
Disciple Groups
Join a Disciple Group for Lent
The season of Lent leads up to the most holy of
Christian days, Easter Sunday. Lent begins on
February 13, Ash Wednesday, and lasts 40 days, plus Sundays (resurrection day!). Lent is a season
of preparation in recognition of the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness preparing for his ministry.
Often people give up things for Lent as spiritual discipline. We can also add things like a
commitment to growing in Christ-likeness, prayer, scripture reading or small acts of kindness. Plan to
learn, share and grow with your church family during
this Lenten season by joining a Disciple group.
*Groups to meet weekly, beginning
the week February 18
