“As Jesus went ashore, he saw a great crowd; and he had compassion for them, because
they were like sheep without a shepherd...”
- Mark 6:34
Although dictionary.com defines compassion as “a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for
another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suf-
fering,” psychologist and author Stephen Gilligan describes compassion as having three le-
gitimate and necessary faces: tenderness, fierceness and mischievousness. Examples
abound in the gospels of Jesus responding with sympathetic concern to someone’s pain
(think: the healing of the blind men in Matthew 20:34), but being tender was not the only
way that Jesus sought to carry out his ministry of bringing “good news to the poor, release
to the captives, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed.” (Luke 4:18)
Sometimes Jesus’ compassion wore the face of fierceness - especially when he was con-
fronted with the pain of injustice. His overturning of the tables of the money-changers in
the temple (Mark 11:15) or blasting the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy (Matthew
23:23-36) are good examples.
Sometimes Jesus’ compassion wore the face of mischievousness. In the story of the feeding
of the 5000 quoted above, Jesus expressed tenderness towards those who were hungry and
tired, but he also mischievously challenged his disciples to think outside the box when he
said to them, “You give them something to eat!” I wonder if Jesus was also being mischie-
vous when he plucked heads of grain on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1) or played word games
with Nicodemus in John 3:1-10?
Gilligan notes that most people know how to do two of the three faces of compassion really
well. However, all three responses to suffering have an important
place in the “toolbox” of compassionate followers of Jesus.
Which face of compassion do you need to develop?
Be God’s,
Pastor Bonnie

The are many dates open for sponsorship and dedication dur-ing this and the upcoming months. You should sign your name on the chart in the narthex by the appropriate date after you have completed your envelope. Please do not sign the chart without completing an envelope.
Shenkel UCC celebrates the
sacrament of Holy Com-
munion at both services on
the first Sunday of each
month. Each time com-
munion is served, some of
the bread and non-alcoholic
wine that has been conse-
crated at the altar will be
saved in a traveling communion kit, ready to go to
the homes or hospital rooms of members who were
unable to be present, and would like to receive the
sacrament. Please let Pastor Bonnie know if you, or
someone you know, would appreciate “distance-
communing” with their Shenkel Church family!

STAUFFER KUTZ
WOODWORK Up for Silent Auction!
Come see the beautiful wood crea-
tions that Stauffer Kutz has crafted
for us again this year! Each item will
be displayed in the Narthex until June 1st. Simply
add your name and the amount you are willing to pay
to be the new owner of each item...and on June
10th, we will announce the winners during our Chil-
dren's Worship service.
SAVE-A-TAPE PROGRAM
This is the easiest way to help our church
financially. Just ask for a Save-A-Tape card
at the customer service spot at your local
Redner’s store. Show your card at the regis-
ter when you check out, then bring your reg-
ister tapes to church and deposit them in
the box in the Narthex. These tapes are collected routinely,
presented to the store, and Redner’s donates a percentage of
your total purchase to the church.
Be careful to bring your tapes in regularly instead of saving
them at home, as they do expire if not redeemed within a cer-
tain time period. Also, please return the entire register tape.
Redner’s will not accept any register receipt that has any part
of it removed.
You may remember that, in last month’s Newsletter, we re-
ported receiving a check from Redner’s in the amount of
$196.67 in April. We have received another check (just one
month later) for another $156.20! That makes a grand total
of $352.87 in extra revenue for the church! Just for handing
in your grocery register tapes.
Keep up the good work and Thank You, Redner’s!
Recycling Reminder….Please remember
that we collect only aluminum
cans here at the church for recy-
cling. But please continue to re-
cycle all your other recyclables
at home.
During the month of June,
we will be accepting offerings
for the Family Thank Offering/
Strengthen the Church, which is
the UCC’s annual offering to help build our denomina-
tional future. Funds are directed to your church’s con-
ference, local churches and various important minis-
tries. Please be as generous as you can.

STEWARD’S CORNER
Here I am again…with wonderful news. Pastor Bonnie celebrated Mother’s Day with Henry! I
have to admit he is very cute, maybe a little shy, doesn’t say much, and stays by her side, fol-
lowing her.
This is her 10th canine companion, and they both seem very happy together! He came to church
with her and they were delighted with the service that the youth of the congregation held. Those
kids did a great job; they were in charge of the whole service…complete with children’s mes-
sage, scripture reading, sermon, and the singing; which was accompanied by drum, guitar, and piano. Ariel Royer,
youth director, was sitting there beaming with pride in the Youth Group’s performance.
I think Henry liked it too. For someone so young, that’s encouraging. Pastor Bonnie will be training him for several
months, and we will all be watching the progress this little black puppy makes as Pastor Bonnie prepares him to be-
come a seeing eye dog.
Doggone, it’s time to sign off
STEWARD
(the church mouse)
The Adult Sunday School Class
meets every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m. in
the social hall from September through
“graduation.” Everyone is welcome to class!
Graduation Day this year will be on June 10th.
Please join us on June 3rd for our last regular
class of this season The topic has yet to be an-
nounced, but as always, will prove to be inter-
esting. We hope to see you again at worship
on June 10th at 10:45 to celebrate the close of
yet another great Sunday School season. We
will resume regular classes in September.
The third Thursday of each month is a time for prayer and anointing, and also a time for reflec-
tion. We will be meeting in the Agape Room from 9:15 till 10:00 AM. Anyone who is in need of
prayer or anointing is invited to come.
The Prayer Chain list is continually being updated. Request for prayers should be placed in the
prayer box in the Narthex, or get in touch with any member of the Wholeness Committee. Prayer
requests will be carried for one month. If anyone is interested in ministering on the Prayer Chain,
please contact Ann Baccari or Freda Wanner. Members of the Wholeness Committee are Ann
Baccari, Ted Gray, Tootie and Louise Hine, June Hartung, Carol Stubbe and Freda Wanner.
Don't miss the Year-End Sunday School Celebration on June 10th at the 10:45 wor-ship service! This is the only service that
day and there are sure to be lots of fun activities led by our Kids on the Move children! You might learn sign language, go on a Trust Walk...or even do a little dance! We look forward to seeing you there!!
MUSIC NEWS FOR JUNE It’s hard to believe that we’re about ready to move outside for our summer worship in The
Grove, so we wanted to take the opportunity to thank all the musicians at Shenkel for
their help, dedication and participation in the music program throughout the year. It’s
encouraging to see our choirs have grown, participation is increasing…but as the old say-
ing goes: ―you can’t be too skinny…or have too many members in the choir.‖ (I think we
altered that just a little.)
Please consider joining us for two ―Choir of the Day‖ services that will assemble whoever wants to sing with us that
day for a short rehearsal in Fellowship Hall ( at 8:30) and then sing as a choir during the 9:30 service that day.
Mark your calendars for July 8 and August 12 for the two times we’ll do that this summer…AND, just to make it spe-
cial, our July 8 service is something new this year…Christmas in July! A celebration of the birth of Jesus six months
ahead of time…and yes, we’ll be singing Christmas Carols that day too.
We receive such wonderful comments about the music program, and for that we are very thankful. However, it’s
important that we continue to expand our ranks with newer music and different styles. That means we continuously
are searching for new music to bring to Shenkel…and it’s getting more expensive! So, we’re introducing a new way
for you to “Sponsor Today’s Anthem.” You can dedicate the choir’s anthem to a loved one, someone you want to
hold in your thoughts with a musical selection or dedicate an anthem to celebrate a birthday or anniversary or just
―because‖ you love music. This will help the music program expand our library. The cost to Sponsor Today’s An-
them is $30 and there is a (blue) envelope in the Narthex for you to sign up and place your check.
Just to show you, we have music in our file cabinets that have prices of $.20 cents per copy…they are from 1950’s.
Now, music is generally $2.00 per copy, and with 20 copies needed each week…you can do the math! Thanks for
helping to stretch our budgets with this wonderful way to remember someone special each week.
We’re still looking for a few soloists for summer worship, so please see Joan if you are interested in giving your tal-
ent during a weekend this summer. We’re also in need of several people willing to help set up the sound equip-
ment in The Grove in time for worship. Please let Jeff Graef know if you can help.

MORE SHENKEL NEWS….
String Attached!!!
On most Wednesdays during the summer, Pastor Bonnie will be looking for com-
pany to join her (Dutch treat) for lunch at noon at St. Peter’s bakery in St. Peter’s
Village or at Positively Pasta in Pottstown. The only string attached is that you
must bring someone who is NOT a member at Shenkel along with you! No kid-
ding – that’s the only string! You can come with a friend who is a member, but then BOTH of you have
to bring a non-member friend along – and that’s cool – the more the merrier! The topic of discussion dur-
ing lunch will be completely up to you – we can talk about Shenkel, but we don’t even have to mention
the word “church” if you don’t want to!
You can help me connect with some folks in the community that I might otherwise not have a chance to
meet, and enjoy a good lunch and conversation at the same time!

WHY WE LOVE CHILDREN…..
A little girl was sitting on her grandfather's lap as he read her a bedtime story. From time to time, she would take her eyes off the book and reach up to touch his wrin-kled cheek. She was alternately stroking her own cheek, then his again. Finally she spoke up, "Grandpa, did God make you?" “Yes, sweetheart," he answered, "God made me a long time ago." "Oh," she paused, "Grandpa, did God make me too?" "Yes, indeed, honey," he said, "God made you just a little while ago." Feeling their respective faces again, she observed, "God's getting better at it, isn't he?"
