SISTEMA FMUSP-HC
Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo
Hospital das Clínicas
The Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo (FMUSP) and the Hospital das
Clínicas (HC) constitute the core of the most important academic health center in Brazil:
the Sistema FMUSP-HC.
2
Objective
The main goal of the “Sistema FMUSP-
HC” is to provide teaching, research and
extramural activities with emphasis on a
multidisciplinary and multi-institutional
approach, adaptable to the Brazilian reality
and able to contribute to the development of
the country, so it becomes included in the
societies regarded as world references in
education and health.
History
On December 19th, 1912, a governmental decree gave birth to the “Faculdade
de Medicina e Cirurgia de São Paulo”. Dr. Arnaldo Vieira de Carvalho was
appointed as its first dean in 1913, the same year in which the inaugural class was
given.
At the beginning, theoretical activities took place in buildings owned by other
institutions, since the “Faculdade de Medicina” had no building of its own. From
1920 (Cornerstone Ceremony) to 1931, the main edifice was constructed by means of
a donation made by the Rockefeller Foundation, which established conditions for this
contribution, such as the limitation of the number of students per group and the
construction of a teaching hospital by the governor of the state.
These preconditions were
based on recommendations
made by Abraham Flexner,
evaluator of the American
Medical Schools at the
beginning of the 20th century.
The “Hospital das Clínicas”,
core of the Hospital Complex
of the “Faculdade de Medicina
da USP”, was completed in
1944, and became the first
teaching hospital in Brazil.

In 1951, the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American
Medical Association and the Association of American Medical Colleges voted to
include FMUSP in the list of foreign schools whose graduates should be rated
equally to graduates from the best medical schools in the United States.
Since then, our excellence has been preserved and enhanced. Presently,
FMUSP is part of an Academic Health Sciences Center of great importance.
Structure and composition
The “Sistema FMUSP-HC” is comprised of the following institutions:
• The “Faculdade de Medicina” (University of São Paulo Medical School), with 17
departments, 350 professors and 600 technical/administrative employees;
• A 2,221-bed Hospital complex constituted by eight specialized institutes for high
complexity medicine (tertiary level), two auxiliary hospitals and two units
dedicated to the integral treatment of HIV/AIDS patients. The complex has 15,581
employees, 2,600 of whom are medical doctors;
• The medium complexity “Hospital Universitário”, responsible for providing
secondary level health care to local communities;
• “The Centro de Saúde Escola Butantã”, which gives primary health care to
neighboring communities;
• The Tropical Medicine Institute, dedicated to the teaching and research of
infectious and parasitic diseases;
4
• “Hospital Emílio Ribas”, specialized in infectious diseases;
• “Projeto Região Oeste” (West Region Project), in charge of the reorganization and
operation of health services and actions in the west district of São Paulo. The
main goal of the project is to enable professional integration, multidisciplinary
teaching and the offer of services in a longitudinal, hierarchical and integrated
manner, concepts attuned with the FMUSP Academic Project.
• 62 Clinical Investigation
Laboratories (LIMs),
responsible for research
activities in almost all
fields of health;
• The “Fundação Faculdade
de Medicina” and the
“Fundação Zerbini”,
private foundations which
have been key to provide
administrative agility and
efficiency, as well as
additional fund raising. Health Sciences Research Medical Laboratories

Other institutes, colleges and schools of the University of São Paulo are
integrated with the “Sistema FMUSP-HC” through teaching and research activities.
Besides that, various public and private institutions develop partnership programs
with the “Sistema FMUSP-HC”.
Teaching, Education and Research
The “Sistema” is responsible for 7.27 % of all the research done
in the area of health and biomedical sciences in Brazil. This
outstanding output was performed by 1,400 undergraduate
students (Medicine, and Physical, Speech and Occupational
Therapies); 1,700 graduate students in 27 master’s and
doctorate programs, advised and tutored by 666 professors, and
approximately 1,000 residents (all specialties).
Extramural Activity
Extramural activities comprise cultural and educational
programs for the community as well as primary, secondary
and tertiary health care implemented by the assistance units
of the “Sistema”. In addition to that, there are activities which
involve an indigenous community in Parelheiros and an
advanced FMUSP campus in the northeast region of Brazil.
