Failing to plan is planning to fail. We all want to win in life and achieve our dreams. The difference between winning and losing is having a detailed, thought-out plan of how you are going to achieve your dreams. The next step is putting that plan into action. Start setting smart goals now.

FLEXING MENTAL MUSCLES

SETTING GOALS

In order to achieve your dreams, you have to set goals or your dreams will remain just dreams.

Goal-setting will empower you on your journey through life and give you purpose and direction.

You may be wondering how to set goals because you may not have done it before. First, think of broad goals ... where do you want to see yourself in 20 years?

• Do you want a family? ________

• Do you want to travel? ________

• Do you want to make a lot of money? ________

• Do you want to help others? ________

• Do you want to be healthy? ________

These are long-term goals. Once you know what these are, you’ll be able to make a road map of how you’re going to get there, which will be your short term goals.

The key to your success is establishing both short-term and long-term goals.

Let’s look at the differences between short-term goals and long-term goals.

Short-term goals

Short-term goals are goals that you expect to accomplish in a short period of time. This can mean today, this week, this month or even this year. A short-term goal is something you want to accomplish soon.

Examples include:

• I want to get an A on my math test on Tuesday.

• I want to make the basketball team this year.

• I want to work harder in practice this week.

Page 7: SKILLS - tuf.files.s3.amazonaws.comtuf.files.s3.amazonaws.com/FMM-sample.pdfFLEXING MENTAL MUSCLES SETTING GOALS In order to achieve your dreams, you have to set goals or your dreams

22

“Set your goals high, and don’t stop till you get there.” ~ Bo Jackson

Long-term goals

Long-term goals are goals you expect to accomplish further in the future and require time and planning. They aren’t something you can do this week or even this year. Long-term goals usually take 12 months or more to achieve.

Examples include:

• I want to be accepted to the college of my choice.

• I want to have my own business.

• I want to have a big family.

ACTIVITY

Read the following statements and check which type of goal each is: short-term (S) or long-term (L).

• Losing 5 pounds in a month S L

• Being successful in my career S L

• Being a good reader S L

• Earning the starting position on my soccer team next month S L

• Earning a 3.5 GPA this year S L

• Saving for retirement S L

• Graduating from college S L

• Purchasing a car by graduation day S L

• Breaking my bad habit of buying vending machine junk food S L

• Learning a new song on my guitar S L

• Doing a good deed for someone once a week S L

FLEXING MENTAL MUSCLES

WHAT ARE SMART GOALS?

SMART Goals are goals that are:

• SPECIFIC: Your goals should answer who, what, when, where and why. They should be detailed.

“I want to run the March Madness Marathon in California this year.”

• MEASURABLE: Your goals should be able to determine if you have hit your target.

“I want to read three books of at least 500 pages each over the summer. “

• ATTAINABLE: Your goals can’t be far fetched; they must be within your reach.

“I want to earn a college academic scholarship through hard work in the classroom.”

• REALISTIC: Your goals should be possible to reach within a certain amount of time.

“I want to lose 1 pound each week for 10 weeks.”

• TIME-BOUND: Your goals must have deadlines. Deadlines will keep you on track.

“ I want to get my college undergraduate degree in four years.”

When thinking about your goals, ask yourself these questions, and you will find that your goals are SMART!

• WHO: Who is involved?

• WHAT: What do I want to accomplish?

• WHERE: Name a location.

• WHEN: Establish a time frame.

• WHY: Specific reasons why you want to accomplishing the goal.

ACTIVITY

Now, spend a few minutes thinking about setting your own goals, both short-term and long-term. In order to be successful at achieving your goals, you need a plan of how you will achieve them. Just like a coach has a game plan on how to win a football game, or a teacher has a lesson plan on how to teach a class, you need to have your own detailed game plan. Also, you MUST HAVE a person identified who will hold you accountable to achieving your goals.

Who is going to check in on you and give you the encouragement you will need?

“Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” ~ Les Brown

6 things to consider

Once you’ve set your goals, you must have a plan in place to help you achieve them. If the following things are in place, you have a great chance for success! If you don’t, your goals are very likely to fall by the wayside.

1) Accountability: Tell someone you trust about your goals so that you’ll have support and someone to help keep you focused.

2) Obstacles: Consider the potential obstacles that might get in your way, so you’re prepared to face them.

3) Passion: How badly do you want to accomplish this goal?

4) Take action! Have the discipline and the persistence needed.

5) Create a habit: Will you need to make this a part of your daily life?

6) Rewards and consequences: Are there rewards or consequences for achieving or not achieving your goal? This should help for motivation!

Setting goals is great to do periodically. It’s exciting to see your accomplishments and what goals you have achieved. Then you can set new ones to get you even further!

ACTIVITY

Below is a motivational exercise for you. List the goals in your life that you have already accomplished. For every goal you list, describe what motivated you, how you accomplished your goal and who held you accountable.
