What is INSTEON?
Since its inception in 2005, INSTEON® has become the best-selling wireless home-control networking technology, offering more
reliability and flexibility than any other home management system on the market. Developed by Smarthome™, INSTEON
technology relies on its dual-mesh network to send signals both through the air (RF, or radio frequency) and over the existing
electrical wires (power line) in the home.
Reliable
With every INSTEON device being a repeater (see how this works (http://www.smarthome.com/insteon_signal_propagation.html) ),
the signal gets stronger with every INSTEON device you add to your home, giving you unsurpassed reliability. In addition, each
INSTEON message contains error detection, so it is very unlikely that lights will turn on accidentally.
Fast
Other home automation networks have a noticeable delay when turning on a light or activating an appliance. INSTEON messages
get through in less than 0.05 seconds - faster than the human eye can detect, so there are no visible delays. Activate an INSTEON
switch and the lights turn on instantly.
X10 Ready
If you've already started putting together an X10 home control network, most INSTEON products are backward compatible iwth
X10 devices to provide a painless upgrade path to an INSTEON network for the ultimate home automation system. Get the
reliability and speed you need without scrapping your existing X10 network.
Affordable
While other home automation systems extend into the thousands of dollars to install and implement, a complete INSTEON system
costs a fraction of its competitors. INSTEON can be integrated into any number of products easily and at a very low cost, so it will
impact your life a whole lot more than it will impact your wallet.
Common Applications:
■ Scene and remote control lighting
■ Security alarm interfaces and sensors
■ Home sensors (e.g., water, humidity, temperature)
■ Access control (e.g., door locks)
■ Heating and cooling (HVAC) control and management
■ Audio-video control
■ Appliance management
■ Energy savings

How INSTEON Works
What makes INSTEON the most reliable home automation network is its dual-mesh network. INSTEON devices use both radio
frequency signals and the home's existing wiring to talk to each other. Every message is confirmed as it is received, and if any errors
are detected, the message is automatically resent.
Unlike all other mesh networks, INSTEON's mesh network has every INSTEON device acting as a repeater -- receiving and sending
every message to all other devices in the network. So instead of stressing the network by adding more INSTEON devices, you
actually strengthen it (see how this works (http://www.smarthome.com/insteon_signal_propagation.html) ). Other mesh networks
use router tables, and only those products involved in routing the signal act as repeaters - resulting in a less reliable network.
No central controller or networking setup is required. Once your module is installed, just use a series of button presses or taps to
Link your devices together. INSTEON devices can act as a Controller, Responder, or both!
Most importantly, INSTEON networks are extremely secure. Each INSTEON device is assigned a unique INSTEON ID, so unless
neighbors or would-be hackers have access to your particular device's INSTEON ID, they won't be able to control your home, even
if they are using similar products.
Technology Comparison
■ INSTEON: Moderately priced, highly reliable dual-mesh RF & power line technology
■ UPB: Expensive single-band (power line only) technology
■ X10: Inexpensive but lacks the robustness, flexibility and reliability required by home-control applications
■ ZigBee & Z-Wave: Single-band (RF-only) wireless networks that require a network controller

Important Note About INSTEON Networks; Split Single-Phase vs. 3-Phase
Installation
For the best INSTEON network performance, be sure you have properly installed at least two Access Points (#2443) or other dual-
band INSTEON products (http://www.smarthome.com/_/Dual_Band/_/36n/nav.aspx) . INSTEON has only been officially tested in
a split single-phase residential environment, but has been known to work in many 3-phase systems, where three dual-band products
are used (one on each phase). However, due to the potential complexity of its troubleshooting, INSTEON Gold Support Line is
unable to support INSTEON in 3-phase environments.

Setting up your Network for Use While Away From Home
■ These instructions are also for in-home use if your PDA or mobile device does not support Wi-Fi
■ These instructions assume the user is familiar with networking setup and firewall management (you will need to refer to
your router’s instruction manual to determine how to perform the following steps on your specific router)
■ User needs to be aware that there are always risks associated with configuring devices to make them accessible to the
Internet. User takes full responsibility for network management and security. Smartlabs takes no responsibility for your
network security.
■ You must be on your local network (same as your SmartLinc) when registering at http://smartlinc.smarthome.com (final
steps below)
1. Set up port forwarding on your router.
■ Log onto your router
■ Determine what your router's range of DHCP addresses is (you
may need to contact your Internet service provider for this
information)
Page 9 sur 372412 Manual rev 2.0 - Smarthome
2012-01-05http://wiki.smarthome.com/index.php?title=2412_Manual_rev_2.0
■ Once you have determined the range of DHCP addresses,
choose an IP address outside that range (e.g., 192.168.0.101)
■ Open the "port forwarding" (sometimes called virtual servers)
feature on your router
■ Forward the IP address you chose (and we advise a random
port of your choice to move the server off the default port 80)
2. Set up SmartLinc authentication.
■ Log onto your SmartLinc while at home via
http://smartlinc.smarthome.com and choose the I'm at home
option
■ Click the Settings icon (wrench, bottom middle)
■ Click Authentication (bottom of screen)
■ Enter your username and password of choice (10 character
max., letters, number and "@" only)
■ Click Save User Name and Password
3. Set up the SmartLinc IP address and port number.
■ From the SmartLinc Setting page (wrench, bottom middle),
click Change Network Settings
■ Change the IP address to match the IP address you forwarded
in your router (step 1 above)
■ Click on Disabled for DHCP
■ Click Save
■ Unplug your SmartLinc from the electrical outlet for at least
10 seconds, then plug it back in. You may want to jot down
your INSTEON ID located on the back of your SmartLinc for
reference later (xx.xx.xx).
4. Test Settings.
■ Enter your SmartLinc's new IP address and port (if applicable)
into your browser. For example: http://192.168.0.20:8080
Your SmartLinc homepage should load
■ If your homepage does not load after the above step, you may
want to make sure you formatted the address properly and that
you entered the same IP address and port number in step 3 as
you did in step 1
5. Register your SmartLinc for remote access.
■ Log onto http://smartlinc.smarthome.com
■ Click on New User Registration
■ Type in your username
■ Type in your password (twice)
■ Type in your SmartLinc's INSTEON ID (8 character,
including dots)

Restoring Power to SmartLinc
This INSTEON device stores all of its settings, such as Links to other INSTEON devices, On-Levels/Ramp Rates, etc., in non-
volatile memory. Because settings are saved in this non-volatile memory, they will not be lost in the event of a power failure.
Additionally, in the event of a power loss, the INSTEON device will return the load to its last-known powered state once power is
restored.

Using Custom Commands in SmartLinc
INSTEONThese are the different types of INSTEON commands mentioned in these instructions:
■ Scene commands - activate/control a scene that already exists in your SmartLinc
■ Direct standard commands - activate/control any single device in your INSTEON network, even if it is not Linked to your
SmartLinc. See discussion tab for existing issue with this feature.

INSTEON Scene Commands
INSTEON scene commands are a great way to "copy" scenes in SmartLinc. Here's how:
1. Find the scene number of the scene you want to control by
navigating to its command line. Its scene number will be
displayed below its command line
2. Navigate to the desired scene's command line to which you want to add
control of another scene
Page 28 sur 372412 Manual rev 2.0 - Smarthome
2012-01-05http://wiki.smarthome.com/index.php?title=2412_Manual_rev_2.0
3. To add Scene 1 On to the current scene, enter the following into its
command line:
0261011101
Be sure to select the check box to the right of the command line and click Save and return
Here's what each part means:
Here's how each part works:
1. Enter 0261, which starts the INSTEON scene string
2. Enter 01, which is the scene number of the scene to control
3. Enter 11, which corresponds to an INSTEON On command in the INSTEON Translation Table
4. Enter 01, which is the scene number
Both the scene number and command can be changed to send different commands to different scenes, etc. To string several
commands together, see notes about Macros below. Here are some additional tips when using INSTEON scene commands:
■ Scene number "FF" is a special scene which will control all devices linked to your SmartLinc
■ Check the INSTEON Translation Table every once in a while for a list of supported commands
INSTEON Direct Commands
INSTEON direct commands are used when you want to control a specific device that may or may not be linked to your SmartLinc.
Also, direct commands add flexibility when it comes to behavior. For example, send a command to turn on a light to an On-Level of
50%. To do this, enter the following into your SmartLinc command line:
026211217F0F117F
Here's what each part means:
Here's how each part works:
1. Enter 0262, which starts the INSTEON direct string
2. Enter 11217F, which corresponds to 11.21.7F, the INSTEON ID of the Responder
3. Enter 0F, indicating a standard direct command (as opposed to extended)
4. Enter 11, which corresponds to an INSTEON ON command in the INSTEON Translation Table
5. Enter 7F, which corresponds to a 50% On-Level. See INSTEON Translation Table for command On-Level values. Note: On-
Levels values range from 0-255, then are converted to hexadecimal. For example, 100% On-Level is 255 (in decimal), and FF
(in hex). So, for a 100% On-Level, FF would be entered here.
Page 29 sur 372412 Manual rev 2.0 - Smarthome
2012-01-05http://wiki.smarthome.com/index.php?title=2412_Manual_rev_2.0
INSTEON ID, command, and On-Level can be changed to modify the device you're controlling, the command being sent, or the On-
Level (if sending an ON command). Note: If not sending an ON command, the On-Level will still need a value, even though it does
not get used. This is done to keep all messages the same length.
X10 Commands
First, X10 commands are usually sent as follows: A1 AON, A4 ABRIGHT, B6 BOFF
As an example, we'll send an A1 AON to turn on any devices addressed to A1. To send an A1 AON enter this into your SmartLinc
command line:
02636600P102636280
Here's what each part means:
Here's how each part works:
1. Enter 0263, which starts the first X10 string
2. Then, enter 6, which corresponds to A in the X10 Translation Table for House Code
3. Then, enter 6, which corresponds to 1 in the X10 Translation Table for Unit Code
4. Then, enter 00, which finishes the string, indicating the string contains an address (and not a command)
5. Enter P1, a 1-second pause, between the A1 and the AON
6. Enter 0263, which starts the second X10 string
7. Then, enter 6, which corresponds to A in the X10 Translation Table for House Code
8. Then, enter 2, which corresponds to an ON command in the X10 Translation Table for command
9. Then, enter 80, which finishes the string, indicating the string contains a command (and not an address)
Feel free to tinker with the command line, substituting different addresses or commands, by replacing the appropriate parts with the
desired addresses and commands located in the X10 Translation Table. Here are some general guidelines to follow:
■ Always start your X10 strings with 0263
■ Every X10 string will be 8 characters, starting with 0263 and ending with either 00 or 80
■ Always insert a pause between X10 strings. For 1 second, use P1.
To string multiple X10 commands together, see notes about Macros below.
Macros and Pauses
Creating a macro is done simply by stringing many commands together on a single command line. This allows you to perform
several actions with a single button press. Control several SmartLinc scenes with one button press or set up timers in increments of a
second. Note: The maximum number of characters per command line is 44. Macros are great for:
■ Controlling several SmartLinc scenes from a single button press
■ Adding X10 devices to an INSTEON scene
■ Controlling devices SmartLinc is not Linked to (direct commands), or setting them to different On-Levels
■ Creating timers. For example, create a "Turn Lights on for 30 Seconds" scene. Simply add a pause (P9P9P9P3) between the
ON and OFF commands
Page 30 sur 372412 Manual rev 2.0 - Smarthome
2012-01-05http://wiki.smarthome.com/index.php?title=2412_Manual_rev_2.0
Here's how to create a pause:
1. Enter P to start a pause
2. Enter a single digit for number of seconds. For example, P2 will provide a 2-second pause.
Notes about stringing different types of commands together:
■ If stringing a command after an INSTEON scene command, be sure to insert a pause between the two commands (1/2
seconds per link). For example, if sending a direct INSTEON command after an INSTEON scene command which has four
Links in it, insert a 2-second pause after your scene command and before your direct command. This pause is necessary to
prevent the direct command from cancelling the group's "confirmation" process where it makes sure all scene members are
responding properly.
■ Pauses can be strung together (For example, P9P9P9P9P9 provides a 45-second pause)

Understanding Why an INSTEON Network Is Reliable
INSTEON messages travel throughout the home via power line on the existing house wiring, or wirelessly via RF using Access
Points (#2443) or other dual-band INSTEON products (http://www.smarthome.com/_/Dual_Band/_/36n/nav.aspx) . As the
messages make their way to the INSTEON devices being controlled, they are picked up and retransmitted by all other INSTEON
devices along the way. This method of communicating, called a mesh network, is very reliable because each additional INSTEON
device helps to support the overall network.
To further ensure reliability, every INSTEON device confirms that it has received a command. If an INSTEON Controller does not
receive this confirmation, it will automatically retransmit the command up to five times.
Further Enhancing Reliability
As signals travel via the power line or RF throughout the home, they naturally become weaker the farther they travel. The best way
to overcome signals getting weaker is to increase the coverage of the mesh network by introducing more INSTEON devices.
It is possible that some audio-video products, computers, power strips or other electrical equipment may attenuate INSTEON signals
on the power line. You can temporarily unplug suspected devices to test whether the INSTEON signal improves. If it does, then you
can add plug-in filters (http://www.smarthome.com/_/Beginner_Installs_10_minutes_/INSTEON/_/23L/23b/nav.aspx?Ntt=filter)
available from Smarthome that will permanently fix the problem.

Using Dual-Band INSTEON Products to Upgrade Your INSTEON Network
What are phases?
The majority of single-family homes in North America have two phases (or "legs") of 110 volts coming into their electricity panels.
From the panel, they are distributed throughout the home, providing power to outlets and wall switches. These phases come together
in some parts of the home to provide 220 volts of power to large appliances, such as an electric oven or pool pump.
Why do I need to bridge these phases?
Single-band power line devices send commands via the home's electricity, but only on a single phase. If the command is intended
for a device on the opposite phase, there is a good chance the command will go unnoticed. Installing dual-band INSTEON products
(http://www.smarthome.com/_/Dual_Band/_/36n/nav.aspx) , such as Access Points, on each phase will allow devices to
communicate between the two phases via radio frequency (RF).
Dual-band INSTEON products embody the full potential of a true INSTEON mesh network. Taking the power line band signal and
working in conjunction with the RF band signal, its dual-band function plays out in two ways:
■ Phase bridger - a receiver of commands, reacting to and translating signals sent from one power phase to the opposite
via RF
■ Signal repeater - a participant in an INSTEON network, repeating commands intended for other devices whether those
commands are generated from RF or power line-only devices
While using at least one dual-band product is required when using an RF-only device, at least two dual-band products are
recommended to ensure reliable communication across two-phase home wiring systems. For larger applications, it is recommended
to install at least two dual-band products for each 750 - 1,000 square feet.

About INSTEON and X10
Possible BoosterLinc Interference with INSTEON
If you have installed older Smarthome Plug-In BoosterLinc™ X10 Signal Boosters or certain other BoosterLinc-enabled products,
the older BoosterLinc technology may interfere with INSTEON communications. Plug-In BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters,
Smarthome (#4827) shipped after February 1, 2005, with V3.0 or later firmware, are fully compatible with INSTEON.
The following Plug-In BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters use older firmware that may cause interference with INSTEON:
■ White BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827) shipped before February 1, 2005, with V2.5 or earlier firmware
■ All Gray BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827)
Try unplugging the older BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters to see if this helps with INSTEON interference, If it does, please contact
INSTEON Gold Support Line for help with replacing your older BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters with newer INSTEON-
compatible ones.
The following pre-INSTEON Smarthome products have BoosterLinc technology that you can turn on or turn off when you set the
X10 address for the product. If turned on, the BoosterLinc technology may interfere with INSTEON.
KeypadLinc™ 6-Button with
Integrated Dimmer (#12073W,
#12073WB and #12073WW)
SwitchLinc™ Relay 2-Way (#23883
and #23883T)
ToggleLinc™ 2-Way Dimmer
(#23890) and Switch (#23893)
Note
To disable BoosterLinc X10 Signal Amplification on these products:
1. Press & hold the Set button
2. Send the X10 Primary Address
3. Send an X10 OFF command
You can send an X10 ON command in Step 3 to re-enable the BoosterLinc
feature.
If you have any of these products and the BoosterLinc feature is turned on, please consult your Owner's Manual or contact
INSTEON Gold Support Line for help with turning it off.
You may then wish to install newer INSTEON BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters, which INSTEON Gold Support Line can help you
with.
How INSTEON Effects X10
If your existing X10 devices seem to be working less reliably after installing INSTEON devices, remember that INSTEON devices
can absorb X10 signals just as X10 devices do, and that INSTEON devices do not repeat X10 signals. Installing INSTEON-
compatible BoosterLinc X10 Signal Boosters (#4827), or a SignaLinc™
Plug-In Coupler-Repeater (#4826), can increase X10 signal
levels.
Please contact INSTEON Gold Support Line if you have any questions or would like more help.

Port Forwarding
To enable access from outside the home, you will need to set up port forwarding (http://portforward.com/routers.htm) on your
router.
Prevent "Loop-Back" which can cause limited connectivity or slow/sporatic response time
Loop-back happens when you set up your SmartLinc for external use and then you try to use your external IP address (or select
Away From Home from smartlinc.smarthome.com) when you are inside your home's network to access your SmartLinc. To avoid
this, it is recommended to bookmark your internal IP address for home use as well as your external IP address for external use. This
way, it is convenient to use the proper IP address.
My SmartLinc's clock is losing time
Since SmartLinc uses its own internal clock to keep time, it is possible for it to get out of sync with your other clocks. If you require
precise timer activation, it is recommended that you set SmartLinc’s clock every few months or as needed.
Guidelines
1. To create an authentication (username and password), navigate to the Authentication page under Settings.
Note: the password can only validate characters [a-Z] and numbers [0-9].
2. To reset the username and password, press and hold the Set button on the side of the SmartLinc till the LED blinks
(SmartLinc is in Linking Mode) and tap the Set button five times. This will clear the username and password stored in
SmartLinc.

Some Tips and Tricks
1. If you create a name for a scene (or a room), you don't need to click on Show - it will automatically show it for you.
2. If you delete a name for a scene (or a room), you don't have to unclick Show - it will automatically hide it.
3. Blue labels in both room names and scene names indicate that that room (or scene) has a timer.
4. If you hide (uncheck Show) a scene, the timer for that scene will not run until you recheck Show.
5. Likewise, if you hide (uncheck Show) a room, all the timers for scenes in that room will not run until you recheck Show.
6. If you get a 404 error instructing you to use MPFS Upload to put programs on the device, download one of the .bin files here
to your desktop, then click the MPFS Upload link provided in the error. This will install the web page the SmartLinc should
have delivered.
7. Treo Blazer browser cannot use the iPod formatted binary. Be sure to install the "plain html" version for these devices.
