2nd Grade has been studying place value in math. To learn and demonstrate, we sorted sticks into piles of 10. We made 10 rows of 10. We learned that 1 row of 10 tens was 100 sticks! Then we made 10 rows. So, 10 hundreds was a 1000! 2 nd grade went to Lutcher Theater in Orange to see The BFG based on the book by Ronald Dahl. We had a great time

America Unit. Cohen Delino and
Preston Picard have taken AR Tests.
Many of the children got BOOKS,
BLUE JEANS, AND PIZZA for reaching
their reading goals for the 1st nine

first child in mrs.Woods class to start
AR testing!!
On September 9th, Ms. Sargent’s and
Ms. McFatter’s Pre-K classes had a
visitor for our study, “Beginning of
the Year.” A family member came to
share her skill with us. Mrs. Bea
Sargent brought material, thread,
buttons, rickrack, and other
decorative sewing items that she
uses to make her quilts. We were
also able to look at and feel some of
the crazy quilts she has made.

Creative Writing Class
Students are Rockin’ and Rollin’ in our
creative writing enrichment class. The
year started off with students creating
their own lyrics to “I’m Feeling Good”
by Nina Simone. They incorporated ELA
standards in which they had to identify
the theme of the song and provide
evidence of support. We are currently
working on teamwork and how it is a
necessity in real- life situation.
Students have completed multiple
“Quick Fire Challenges” in which they
are given a task to complete using
critical thinking and effective teamwork
skills. They are learning that in order to
be a worthy team member, they must
be patient, kind, open-minded, a good
communicator, and hard-working.
First Grade Students in Mrs. Payton’s class taste-tested different kinds of apples: red delicious, granny smith, and gala. This was in celebration of Johnny Appleseed's birthday in September. Students tasted each kind. They used their senses to describe the different apples, especially the flavor each had. Students then made a graph of their favorite. . We went outside to study our five senses learning about hearing, sight, touch, smell and things we should NOT taste outside. We also learned about Johnny Appleseed and about the parts of an apple. We used actual apples to learn about apple parts and how they grow.
Fourth Grade
4th grade students are studying weather maps and natural disasters in Science. Students wrote weather reports and got to stand up and act as meteorologists!
5th Grade 5th grade has been working very
hard in all of their classes. In Social
Studies, students have been busy
researching different regions,
creating posters, and giving
presentations about their region. In
ELA, they have been learning to
distinguish between theme and main
idea. In Math, students are learning
about place value. Keep working
hard 5th graders!!
. Open House 2015 R.W. Vincent welcomed parents at its annual Open
House Tuesday, Sept. 22nd . Parents were able to visit
with their children’s teachers and find out about the
exciting things going on in the classrooms this year.
Lessons were discussed and students showed parents
their portfolios and discussed the daily operations and
procedures of their classroom with their parents.
R.W. Vincent Grandparent Breakfast
Students celebrated Grandparent’s Day
Sept. 14th and 15th with the annual
breakfast. Students enjoyed showing their
grandparents how to line up and eat in the
cafeteria. Over 200 grandparents
celebrated with their grandchildren!

grade teacher Mrs.
Porcello visits with
students Zoey and Rylee
Granger and their mom.
Third Grade During the first nine weeks, third
graders have been super busy. We have
learned our multiplication and division
tables up to the 5 times tables, and we
have learned how to draw many different
models to solve multiplication and
division problems. We have been reading
both fiction and nonfiction books to help
us become better readers. During an
intense game of tug-of-war, we learned
all about forces and motion. (By the way,
Mrs. Porcello’s class won the games!!) We
are having a blast in third grade!
SPARK & REACH
The first and second grade REACH
and SPARK classes began the year
with a lesson on Solar Energy. To
get things started students used
Steve Spangler’s Rainbow
Peepholes to discover that light
consists of "waves" that can be seen
as color when bent or separated by
a prism. Students were also able to
make “photographs” of their
favorite objects using light sensitive
fabric and the power of the sun.
The students’ absolute favorite
activity was using solar ovens to
harness the sun’s energy and cook
S’mores! Through observation and
data collection students were able
to determine the amount of time
required to cook in a solar oven and
how to achieve the highest possible
temperatures. They were able to
apply this information to determine
the best way to make some tasty
treats at home using their solar
ovens.
SPARK 4th & 5th Mrs. Sylvest and Mrs. Korman's 4th and 5th grade SPARK classes will be learning all about the Stock Market from Mrs. Eisiliones as they participate in the Stock Market Game. Students will learn how to buy and sell stocks and will work together in teams to invest their money. The challenge is on to see who will get the best return on their investments.
The Tribe Has Spoken
Fourth and fifth grade students and all
faculty are starting a new tradition this
year at RWV! Students in 4th and 5th
grade are now part of a team called a
tribe. Students took part in a special
program Oct. 2nd where they played
Plinko and found out what tribe they
would be a part of. Each tribe has special
meaning and a color. The Tunica tribe are
green and they are the supporters of the
school. The Coushatta are orange and
they are the protectors, the Choctaw are
yellow and the illuminators. Finally the
Chitimacha are red and represent care
takers or heart. Tribes are tracking
homework, AR, and behavior. More
suprises and celebrations will happen
throughout the year but we are excited to
start this new tradition!
What
tribe will
you be?
Students in
each tribe
got socks
the color of
their tribe.
