International Women’s Day 2019 | engineersaustraliaiwd.com.au

March 8 is marked as International Women’s Day (IWD), celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women around the world. Established by Clara Zetkin’s vision to overcome inequality and campaign for change in the early 1900’s, IWD gained recognition by the United Nations in 1975 and the purpose of the day is to celebrate success and raise awareness on various issues affecting women globally such as health, education and equality.
About Engineers AustraliaEngineers Australia (EA) is the largest and most diverse professional body for engineers Australia wide with direct access to over 100,000 members. EA is the leading independent voice for the engineering community with strong links to government, industry, education providers and the general public.
About International Women’s Day
Anything is possible In 2019 Engineers Australia will be celebrating its Centenary. This is a significant milestone for our organisation and a chance to stress the critical role engineering plays in the lives of all Australians.
A Centenary is time to take stock. To look back and marvel at our accomplishments. Engineers have helped transform the world: who in 1919 would’ve imagined where technology would be today? And where women would be today?
The Centenary is also a time to look forward and imagine our future. It’s a springboard for the next century; continuing our legacy of supporting human progress, and continuing to expand the boundaries of what is possible.
International Women’s Day is also about celebrating where women have come from and looking forward to see where we can go. This is why the theme for the 2019 event series is being tied in with our Centenary theme “Anything is Possible”.

Engineers Australia’s investment in diversity
Of those qualified, women are less likely to work in engineering roles

Female
An unbalanced professionThe engineering profession needs to draw on all Australians, but the industry’s gender profile is unbalanced.
Influencing factorsEngineering women are just as likely as other women to be in employment, but too often it is not in an engineering-related role.
Engineering is not known as a gender-diverse profession, and indeed the percentage of women in the engineering profession is low. Just 13.6% of the engineering labour force is female, and it’s even lower at 11.2% when only those who are employed in engineering roles are counted. Retention of female engineers is a major issue for the industry. Figures show a decline in Australian-born female engineers in engineering occupations from 69% at 20-24 years down to 14% at 65-69 years (compared to Australian-born male engineers going from 74% at 20-24 years down to 59% at 65-69years). The rates of decline suggest well embedded structural issues that need to be addressed.

Contacts
Achieving gender diversity and inclusion in the workplace takes effort and commitment by employers, employees, governments, and the engineering profession-at-large.
It is not something that can be done by any one organisation or sector of society alone - every little bit counts.
