AMAZINGLY FUN FACT
The most famous resident ever at the San Diego
Zoo, Albert was a handsome silverback western lowland gorilla. Born
in Africa, Albert arrived at the Zoo in August 1949 at about four
months of age. He and two baby female lowland gorillas were hand
raised at the zoo hospital. In 1965, he fathered Alvila, the first lowland
gorilla conceived and born at the San Diego Zoo, and only the seventh
gorilla born in managed care.
Amazingly Fun Facts
Adult African elephants are huge. Males can weigh as much as a school bus! Even their teeth are big—an adult's molar is the size of a brick. Their huge teeth help them grind and eat a lot of plant material every day. Our elephants at the Zoo and the Safari Park each eat over 100 pounds of food each day! An African elephant calf weighs about 250 pounds at birth, and will keep growing throughout its entire lifetime!

A gorilla's big toe is opposable, like our thumbs. It helps the
animal grab food or climb trees.
Is a zebra white with black stripes or black with
white stripes? It's a tricky question! A zebra's coat is
white with black stripes, but under that fur, the
animal's skin is black. So it all depends on how you
look at it! Every zebra's stripe pattern is different—no
two are alike. A zebra foal can walk just 20 minutes
after it is born.
Lions live and hunt on the Savannas
of Africa. A Lion’s roar can be heard up
to three miles away. A male lion’s mane
helps him look intimidating to other lions.
Giraffes are the tallest land animals. A giraffe could look into a second-story window without even having to stand on its tiptoes! A giraffe's feet are the size of a dinner plate.
