SPIE-Cameroon Chapter member’s Universities
The SPIE Cameroon Student Chapter brings together the students from 04
Cameroonian universities. There are the University of Yaounde1, the University
of Ngaoundéré, the University of Douala and the University of Dschang.
Chapter Mission
The mission of the SPIE Cameroon Chapter is to advance light based
technologies and help support its associated community through participation
and organization of activities such as seminars, outreach projects, and social
events. This mission is conducted by each University in its region which allows
the recruitment of new members in the local chapter based in this University.
At the end of each year, SPIE Cameroon Student Chapter organizes a national
seminar. During this national seminar, there is a special officers (both national
and local) meeting where a statement of the chapter and the planning for new
activities are debated. Our aim is to nurture intellectual, social and
professional growth for each of our members, through seminars and
networking opportunities facilitated by SPIE.

Monthly Meeting
OSA Yaoundé 1 Chapter and SPIE-Cameroon Chapter are both supervised by Pr
Paul Woafo. Every first Thursday of each month, the SPIE/OSA meeting is
organized at the Laboratory of Modeling and Simulation in Engineering
Biomimetism and Prototype (LaMSEBP) at the Yaoundé 1 University. The aims
of these meetings are to:
1- Plan new activities,
2- Inform members about SPIE and OSA international events,
3- Discuss about projects and their submission to SPIE and OSA,
4- Build new demonstrations for various outreach activities.
There are some images of the manufacturing sessions of some of our devices
built.

detector.
Outreach Demonstration Development
SPIE-Cameroon/OSA yaounde1 student chapter members have worked together
to build several demonstrations for various outreach activities, intended for
elementary and high schools. These demonstrations include the reflective ball,
the crepuscular detector, the play of light, and the Infrared detection by
Webcam.
1- Reflective ball. We have built a spherical ball which has 10cm of diameter, by
using a cardboard. Around on this ball, we have stuck pieces of glass-like mirror. The
whole is mounted on a rotative arm and is lighted by lasers having different color.
Inside a dark room, this is used to illuminate or to give animation for the dancing
places or during the feats. Beside this festive aspect of that reflective ball, we have
brought out here how the reflection of the light can be used in our daily life.
2- Crepuscular detector. By using some optoelectronical components as
photodiode, photoresitance and potentiometers, we have built a crepuscular detector.
This device detects dark through its photoresitance and can automatically shine.
Indeed, when the photoresitance is less illuminated (dark detection), it automatically
induces the lighting of the photodiode. Such a device can be used for the public (road)
lighting in the night (without command center).
3- Play of light. We have commanded several lamps having different colors through a
synchronization system. When this system is powered, the lamps of the same color
shine together and periodically with those of the other colors. Such device can be used
as light garland during both merry Christmas and Happy New Year feats. It can also
be used to decorate supermarkets and some famous places.
4- Infrared detection by Webcam. The near-IR flashlight cannot be seen with the
human eye, but because the webcam’s sensor is made of silicon, which can absorb
near-IR light, the student can see the flashlight’s light only through the webcam. This
demo teaches the students about the electromagnetic spectrum and gives the
importance of photon sensors which operates outside the wavelength range of human
vision
Outreach and recruitment Activities
SPIE Cameroon chapter promotes the optics/photonics and its
applications in the Cameroonian High schools and Universities. To do
so, the chapter organizes the “SPIE Tour” in order to captive the staff
authorities and the students through the optics/photonics
demonstrations. For this year, the West region of the Cameroon was
chosen to host SPIE Tour activities. The activities have been led in
three different institutions: the University of Dschang, the government
bilingual high school of Dschang and at the TAMA private high
school. Many activities have been developed: talks, optics
manipulations, optics and photonics competitive test and award
ceremony. At the end of this even, the local chapter of the University
of Dschang was renewed and the creation of SPIE club is in process at
the government bilingual high school of Dschang.

Upcoming Events and Seminars
We have a full outline of activity for the coming year, especially concerning the
International Year of Light 2015.
Meetings
We will pursue to organize our monthly meeting (at Yaoundé 1) and will
encourage the others local chapter to do the same. We plan to build more
demonstrations in order to have many kits during our outreach. We are currently
working on the possibility to create the SPIE Clubs in the High schools.
Seminars
We are currently working on deciding a possible list of visiting lecturers, since
we haven’t invited lecturer the last two years. We also plan to organize seminars
at both the Higher Institutions and in the private Universities. The aim of these
seminars is to recruit and to increase awareness and the numbers of SPIE local
chapter members in these Institutions/Universities.
Outreach
The SPIE/OSA student chapters of Yaoundé 1 have organized tours in high
school, undergraduate classes and social groups and will continue to provide
these services in the coming year. The group plans to organize four tours in high
schools and in private Universities next May 2015 during the International Year
of Light activities.
SPIE Chapter Individual Member Activity
The treasurer of the Cameroon SPIE Chapter have applied to the upcoming,
2015 SPIE Photonics Europe Student Chapter Officer Travel Grant.
Our Gratitude
We would like to thank SPIE for all that it does for us, especially for have
granted us this year, the annual activity fund grant and the International Year of
Light activities grant. Therefore, we address our gratitude to the president
Toyohiko Yatagai, C. Tasha, Alison and J. Debra. Your support makes possible
our chapter activities and allows us to diffuse optics/photonics in our
educational community. This has been a great year for us, with a strong focus on
outreach activities and their development. We hope to continue serving our
community in the future with your collaboration through even more activities,
seminars, and outreach.
