It all came crashing downlike the mighty spikes of BellePlaine’s Mariena Hayden forthe Lady Panther volleyballteam Thursday night in NewPrague.

Glencoe-Silver Lake (22-10)was swept in three sets in thesubsection playoffs of Section

2AA by the Tigers — 25-17,25-23 and 25-17.

Belle Plaine was led by Hay-den, whose power was prompt-ly displayed after the Pantherstook a 3-0 to start the openingset. After that, Hayden account-ed for 10 of Belle Plaine’s 25

It was any team’s raceSaturday in Northfieldfor the Class A boys’

state cross country meet, andGlencoe-Silver Lake’s Pan-thers made the season’s final5K a memorable one by tak-ing third with 117 points.

“They had an excellentyear,” Head Coach Jeff Del-wiche said. “Second at sec-tions, third at state, otherwisethey were all wins.”

GSL’s senior-led team fin-ished behind only MartinCounty West (108) and its fa-miliar friend, the Mora Mus-tangs (104). After that, 43points separated Perham fromGSL in fourth place with 160.

“I think they still wantedthat first place, but it was soclose – so close,” said Del-wiche. “There were onlythree teams (with a shot atfirst place), at least it showedup, anyway. Mora, MartinCounty West and us wereright there. I have to take myhat off to Mora, though. Theydid a good job. I know the

guys were happy to place.” Last year at St. Olaf Col-

lege, Delwiche’s boys pro-duced an eighth-place finishin GSL’s first return to thestate meet in 10 years that leftthem hungry for more.

Every Panther who ran inthe finale a year ago im-proved their time and placedrastically, starting with leadrunner Jac Chelman, who fin-ished 10th overall, andshaved 39 seconds off histime from last year by com-pleting the course in 16:12.

“We (ran) to our potential, that’s for sure,” said Chel-man, who mentioned therewas a lot more pressure in-volved this year being rankedin the top five all season long, compared to a season agowhen they flew under theradar a bit more.

“We had all the pressure inthe world on us, that’s forsure,” Chelman said. “I was alittle stressed. But I think wedealt with it pretty well.”

If you call taking first atevery meet the varsity lineupstarted in 2014 – save for the

section championship (sec-ond) and state championship

(third) – indeed they did han-dle it “pretty well.”

“We’ve done what we’vedone this whole year, gettingfirst place constantly,” saidChelman. “It’s been a goodyear. It’s been fun.”

Brandon Richter moved up56 spots from his 86th-place,17:39 performance a seasonago, traversing the route in16:46, and placing 30th Sat-urday.

“Brandon was a little sorryhe didn’t make all-state,”Delwiche said. “But he’shappy with his race. Time-wise, it was a very good timefor him.”

Richter had a phenomenalsenior season, never finishinglower than third in the team’slineup, and claimed theteam’s second spot for thefirst time back in Septemberat Norwood Young America. After that, it was a battle forthe team’s No. 2 spot betweenhim and Isiah Herout.

Both Herout and Richterwere on the heels of Chelmanall season long, until state, when Herout finished out ofthe team’s top three for thefirst time all year. He was

holding strong as the team’sthird runner after about onemile, but once the pack re-turned from a tour of thewoods, Herout had slippedback to fifth behind GarrettOber and Michael Schaeferwith only the final stretch re-maining.

Overall, Herout finished73rd, but his time of 17:19still bested his 17:34 a seasonago when he took 77th place.

The biggest surprise for thePanthers were the perform-ances of Garrett Ober andMichael Schaefer, particular-ly the former, who saved thesecond best time of his careerfor state, running a 17:08.

“It was the last meet of theyear, and we wanted to win,”Ober said. “I was going to bea senior leader and go outthere and try and make theother guys go fast. I can’t run(cross country) anymore, so Ihad to give it my all. I’mhappy with my performance.”

Glencoe-Silver Lake’s Pan-ther football team decided tohand out some first-half treatsfor Halloween against Provi-dence Academy, before pow-ering to a 28-7 seat atop Sec-tion 2AAA Friday afternoonin Plymouth.

“We had four snaps andtwo fumbles,” Head CoachScott Tschimperle noted of hisPanthers’ woeful start, whichled to a 7-0 Lion lead just mo-ments into the contest. “If wewant to move on to the (statesemifinals), we can’t do that,”he added, foreshadowing histeam’s State Tournament-match up with Blue EarthArea on Nov. 8 in Burnsville.

While the offense was busyputting the ball on the ground,Dave Dose’s defensive unitstalked and tamed the Lions, who were led by senior run-ning back Ryan Richelsen.

Richelsen punched in Prov-idence’s only score – a five-yard dive – after Teddy Pe-tersen fumbled on the secondcarry of the game.

“We’re very fortunate thedefense only gave up onetouchdown,” said Tschimper-le, who admitted he was frus-trated when quarterbackKeaton Anderson fumbledafter gaining 20 yards on apair of option runs in the nextseries before fumbling at thetail end of the second scam-

Panther quarterback Keaton Andersongouged the Providence Academy Lionsfor 111 yards on 19 carries in Friday’s 28-7victory. Action is from the fourth quarter, where Mitchell Kettner (13) sprung Ander-

son on an option keeper for seven yards, eventually setting up Bennett Bielke for atwo-yard touchdown that was GSL’s finalscore of the game. Offensively, the Pan-thers totaled 320 yards on 63 plays.

Senior captain Lexi Kerslake’s career as a Panther vol-leyball player came to a close Oct. 30 when GSL fell toBelle Plaine in three sets. Kerslake started at the liberoposition as a freshman before evolving into an outsidehitter. Her time spent as a defensive specialist paved theway for her record-breaking senior season, when shebecame the school’s all time leader in digs with 1,408.

points in the first frame alone —including three straight killsfrom outside that tied the gameat 3-3 as quickly as GSL had es-tablished its lead.

Hayden and Danielle Taylorcombined to give the Tigerstheir first lead of the game 5-3,and the Panthers never quite re-covered until set two.

GSL built another early leadin the second frame, this timegoing up 10-3 behind kills fromoutside hitters Taylor Novak andLexi Kerslake, and middle hitterErika Ribar.

That lead expanded to 18-10at one point as Kerslake tallied10 digs and transitioned theminto offense.

It looked as if GSL wouldrunaway with the second set, butthe Tigers stormed back behindHayden, who rallied with fivekills and opened up scoringlanes for outside hitter DakotaPoitra and middle hitter KayleeHentges.

The Tigers evened the frameand took the lead 23-22 behindHayden’s kills, before stealingthe set 25-23 on a block.

Head Coach Lori Schwirtzfelt her Lady Panthers turneddown their intensity in that sec-ond set, and were lulled intoplaying Belle Plaine’s game.

“The second set was hard tosee slip away,” Schwirtz said. “Ithink BP plays pretty emotion-less, and we are a team withemotion. I feel we allowed theirtempo and play to undertake ourstyle, and we did not keep thepedal down. (That was a) bigloss for us with that lead, despitethe effort.”

It only seemed like it was amatter of time before the Tigersclaimed the game after comingback from so far down in thesecond set.

There was no early lead tosquander in set three for the Pan-thers. Belle Plaine stayed out infront, and never let GSL scoremore than two consecutivepoints in the final contest, beforetaking it 25-17, and endingGSL’s season.

Kerslake finished the gameleading GSL in digs (26) and

kills (13), and capped off herfinal season as the school’s all -time leader in digs with 1,408.

“Every day I ate lunch Ilooked at the little trophy caseand I saw that my (record) ballwasn’t in there,” Kerslake re-called previous to her setting therecord. “Now my ball is in there, and the rest of my senior year Iget to look at it. It’s awesome. It’s always what I wanted.”

Schwirtz said Kerslake andfellow senior Olivia Scharpewill be missed, and that it’s hardto see them move on after put-ting in so much work.

“Lexi’s school record will bevery hard to beat for the nextseveral years. I don’t see it beingsurpassed for a long while, evenwith this group of juniors. Lexistarted for me as a freshman andher growth on the court and as aperson will be missed.

“Olivia is the pinnacle of atrue team player,” Schwirtzadded. “These players are rare. She never complained, workedhard and cheers on her teamwith pride!”

Schwirtz alluded to her cur-rent junior class, which willcome in as seniors in 2015, andhopes they learned from thisseason.

Setter Layne Herrmann andlibero Cortney Konen were jun-ior captains in 2014, and willhead the return next year.

Herrmann eclipsed 1,000 setassists this year, and doesn’tlook like she’ll be slowing downany time soon with Novak re-turning to the outside withEmily Muetzel and ErikaMielke. She’ll also have a talent-ed group of middle hitters to dis-tribute to in Ribar, MadisonKalenberg and Maddie Mona-han.

“I have no doubt these girlswill be better for next year,” saidSchwirtz. “We have unfinishedbusiness ... But it is up to themto push themselves while I amnot there. They have to want tojump a little higher, get a littlefaster, get a little stronger ... thelittle things are what will sepa-rate you from the rest.”

per. “After that second fumble,

we called them all over andsaid, ‘Guys, look, we’re killingourselves. They haven’t doneanything,’” Tschimperle ex-plained. “‘It’s plain and simple. You’ve got to be mentally fo-cused on the job at hand, andtake care of the football.’”

The offense responded by

scoring 28 unanswered pointsover the duration of the game, but still fumbled once morewith 2:29 left in the first halfwhile driving deep into Provi-dence territory.

Luckily, Providence’s of-fense stalled out near the endof the half on a botched fieldgoal attempt, as holder JacksonBaird bobbled the snap, result-

ing in a massive loss whenMason Goettl dragged himdown with a 14-7 Panther leadintact.

The Lions were set to takeover on offense in the secondhalf when Gus Mendozapopped the ball out of thehands of Providence’s ConorWhite on the opening kickoff, giving the Panthers the ball at

the Lion 32. Petersen then redeemed him-

self for his pair of first-halffumbles. First, by knocking thesocks off cornerback WillJohnson with a block thatsprung Anderson for an 11-yard gain from the wishbone;

ished in the lower spots of theteam’s lineup over the firsthalf of the season before miss-ing multiple meets with an in-jury. He put forth his best timeat the Wright County Confer-ence championships, 17:01,placing sixth.

The moment had to be extrasweet for Schaefer, who didnot participate in the statemeet last year because of aninjury. His state time of 17:11that placed 65th is the besttime he’s ran all year, and hasplayed a pivotal role for thePanthers as the only junior.

Schaefer will be counted onheavily in 2015, along with

current sophomore AustinSchroepfer, whose 17:21 runtook 77th place.

While it wasn’t one ofSchroepfer’s best times thisseason, it’s quite the differ-ence from his time of 18:26when he was a freshman, andtook 143rd place.

“It’s going to be on Schae-fer and Schroepfer to geteverybody together and getsome miles in this summer,”Delwiche said. “The two ofthem together will form a pair, and encourage the other run-ners, and make sure we havefive, six, seven guys running19 minutes and under.”

Garret Ardolf also closedout his senior season with hisbest performance when hecame across the finish line17:23 after the opening gunsounded. He took 83rd place, and downed his time from lastyear ’s 17:47 at the sameevent.

“There are no regrets,” Del-wiche said. “I think every-thing went really well. Thekids grew and (matured) andyou could really see it overthe last three to four years. Itculminated in this senior sea-son. There were no mistakes.”

While it was the first in recent games where the Panthersdid not record a sack or a turnover, Dave Dose’s defen-sive unit rose to the occasion against a tough Provi-dence team with a bevy of talented players. Here, Lion

quarterback Henry Van Dellen (12) tried to connect withone of his wide receivers late in the fourth quarter, butZach Jungclaus (81) used his entire frame to get airbornand tip Van Dellen’s pass for an incompletion.

then, with his 12-yard touch-down jaunt one play later.

“That was the turningpoint,” said Tschimperle. “Gusgets a hand on (the ball), and(Mitchell) Kettner recovers it.Then we march down and goup 20-7. That took the windout of their sails.”

Linebacker Nick Brelje andhis defensive comrades forceda Providence punt on its ensu-ing drive, and held the Lions to200 yards of offense and thelone first-quarter touchdown.

Brelje finished with a teambest 12 tackles – six solo – andsaid the Lions were a toughteam, but that Dose always hashim and his teammates pre-pared.

“In the first quarter theylooked pretty good,” Breljesaid. “But Dose’s always got apretty good game plan. He saidjust keep doing what we’redoing.”

Though his defense stymiedRichelsen and the Providencebacks, Brelje said there’s al-ways room for improvementon both sides of the ball, butwas pleased with the outcome.

“Our defense has got to keepit up, and keep getting better,”

Brelje said. “Offense (has) gotto hang on to the ball a bit bet-ter, but we played a goodgame.”

Indeed, GSL will have toevolve if it’s to continue itswin streak that started back onSept. 26, when the Pantherstorched Mound Westonka 48-0in a homecoming-blow out.

A 20-7 loss to New London-Spicer has been the catalyst tothat run, and if GSL – No. 3 -can find a way to defeat theNo. 9 ranked Blue Earth AreaBuccaneers (8-1), a rematchwith the Wildcats may be instore if they can defeat No. 6ranked Esko Saturday in St.Cloud. But that doesn’t meanthat GSL is looking past theBuccaneers.

“We’re not the same team asthe one that played againstNew London,” Tschimperlesaid. “After that game, we saidwe were going to fix this, andplay that team again in thesemis, and the kids bought intoit. But now we’ve got to getready for a very good BlueEarth team.”

Captain of the Buccaneers’ship is senior quarterback LukeSchavey, who primarily oper-

ates out of shotgun and pistolformations, and can throw adangerous deep ball with timein the pocket.

Also key to their offensiveproduction is senior tackleMartin Granados, who actuallylines up in the backfield as ablocking back on multiple sets, and is crucial to BEA’s powerand counter runs between thetackles.

GSL’s defense has beengreat this year at not allowingbig plays in the passing game, but a year ago in the openinground of the state tournament,St. Croix Lutheran made it pastthe Panthers by taking hugechunks of yardage through theair.

“We haven’t given up thedeep ball, and we preach thatbecause of last year, becausewe gave up a lot of them,”Tschimperle said. “The kids allthis year have been told,‘Don’t get burned deep.’ And Ihave all the confidence in theworld that’s not going to hap-pen, but we’ve got to contain(Schavey).”

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. on Satur-day, Nov. 8, at Burnsville HighSchool.

Pastor’s CornerRev. Katherine RoodChrist Lutheran Church , Glencoe

It’s hard to imagine that 2014 is soon in our rearview mirror! Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas with all theadded concerts, programs, recitals and gatherings for both family and the work place have already crowded our calendars for thenext two months. Time is always a precious commodity, but when squeezed between all our obligations and desire for the Good

Life, the lack of it can cause heart palpitations! And if that doesn’t cause you some angst, the added financial burden just might do thetrick!

If you’re still reading this “little reflection”, there IS some Good News! Contrary to everything in our cultural malaise of social dis-tress, these same two months mentioned above, afford all God’s creatures the opportunity for giving thanks! Taking a few momentseach day to prayerfully and gratefully contemplate the blessings of each new day, including a review of the past ten months or more, will cause an inner shift and grant us a new lens as we live into the hectic days ahead. Gratitude simplifies even the most complex sit-uations. Gratitude can loosen the knot in our stomachs, the squeeze around our hearts, and with every breath – miraculously, givespace and time for what is most important to living the Good Life.

Gratefully acknowledging the grace of God who gives us life, breath, and the awareness of being made in His image and likenessenables us to experience a simple, yet profound truth: We have been created in love, by love, for love! When that truth comes hometo us, our priorities come into proper focus and time is stretched from here to eternity! The key is in your own heart; gratitude un-locks the door to a life well-lived!

This weekly message is contributed by the following concerned citizens and businesses who urge you to attend the church of your choice. To be added to this page, contact us at 320-864-5518.
