Coppoc One Health Lecture presented by:

RAINA PLOWRIGHT, BVSc, PhDAssistant Professor, Microbiology and ImmunologyMontana State University

NOVEMBER 7, 20193:30 - 4:30 p.m. | LYNN 1136Reception to follow in the Lynn Hall Veterinary Medical Library

“Pathogen Spillover: Lessons Learned From Emerging Bat Viruses”

Dr. Raina Plowright is an infectious disease ecologist, epidemiologist, and wildlife veterinarian. As an assistant professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Montana State University, she uses interdisciplinary approaches to investigate the dynamics of disease systems that connect human and animal populations. After working as a veterinarian on five continents, Dr. Plowright received an Australian Fulbright Fellowship to complete her PhD in ecology and MS in epidemiology at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Plowright was then a David H. Smith Fellow in conservation research at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Pennsylvania State University before moving to Montana State University. Her research focuses on the dynamics of zoonoses in wildlife, the conservation implications of diseases in wildlife, the transmission of pathogens across species barriers, and links between environmental change and disease emergence. Her group focuses on bat pathogens including Hendra virus, rabies virus, and the fungal pathogen causing white nose syndrome. She is the PI of an NSF Coupled-Natural-Human-Systems grant focused on henipaviruses in Australia and a multi-collaborator DARPA-PREEMPT project focused on henipaviruses in Australia, Bangladesh, Madagascar, and Ghana.

(Re)programming cell identity and function in the context of chromatin in response to developmental and environmental cues. Doris Wagner

Robert I. Williams Term Professor, Department of Biology Epigenetics Institute/University of Pennsylvania

Co-Sponsored with the Department of Biochemistry

NOVEMBER 12, 2019 | 3:30 PM | WSLR 116 Our research focuses on the reprogramming of cell identity and function during developmental transitions and in response to environmental inputs in plants. Reprogramming offers a window of opportunity to unravel the regulatory logic that underlies cell fate and function as existing programs are shut down and new ones are put in place. Plants are an excellent experimental system to address this question as they tailor not only their cell function but also their body plan to a changing environment to optimize growth and survival. We have shown that master transcriptional regulators, hormone response and chromatin state together orchestrate cell fate reprogramming in plants.
