Commodore’s Report
“Time flies when you ‘re having fun”
I’m sure many of you have heard and
seen the phrase written and said many
times before, but I cant believe we are
heading into our next AGM as I embark
on my next term (if elected) as com-
modore.
As always much has been happening in
and around the club while the weather
is cooler and the wind, well…..as I write
it is bucketing down and I’m happy to
be sitting inside. The undercroft boat
storage area has been cleaned and
ready for a new season. To free up
some space we plan to store the club
Muddies in their own compound out-
side the area to give members more
space. The plan is to increase the num-
ber of showers in the male change
rooms, while providing a new extrac-
tion/ventilation system. Lastly, we are
getting quotes to complete a bit more
landscaping around the club to provide
security and storage for more mem-
bers. All of these works will require a
lot of labor. To assist in making this
happen we need the assistance of our
membership to enable costs to be kept
to a minimum, so stay tuned.
Last weekend the 14’s held their fund-
raiser to kick off the 2020 worlds re-
gatta. It was a great night with many
laughs and fun held by all. A big thanks
to all the members that supported the
event and got into the spirit by dress-
ing up and dancing the night away. For
those that weren’t there missed a
great night with the launching of the
I14 2020 promo Movie. Just makes you
want to go sailing. To begin the promo-
tion the WA fleet are sending 3 boats
to the 2018 worlds in San Francisco.
Good luck to all those involved and I’m
sure their will be many stories told up-
on their return.
Just like most championship periods
the club this year has the pleasure of
hosting the Herons for their Australian
Championship. This is a great oppor-
tunity for the class to build their num-
bers and for the club to again show
case how we do things at PDSC. More
details on the championship will be
released in the coming weeks so stay
tuned.
As we draw to the end of the club fi-
nancial year and AGM I would like to
take this opportunity to thank the
committee for their dedication and
commitment for helping me guide the
club through season 2017/18. Just like
most years at the club we are faced
with our challenges and without the
support of our committee and mem-
Andrew Wilson
bership it would make a tough job
even harder. With the change of the
sailing season sees some of the
committee stepping down. Thank
you to Amanda and Judy for their
contribution on the committee over
the past seasons. Thank you also to
Jan Thomas for stepping up as Sec-
retary for the last three years while
we had no one to fill the position.
Lastly some big thanks and a dip of
my hat to Mike Dean for his contri-
bution as Treasurer over the last
two years. This is by no means a
small job and Mike has taken it
onboard and made it his own. This
leaves the club without a Treasurer
going into season 2018/19 but like
previous years will hopefully be
filled at the AGM.
See you all next week at the AGM

Past Events (A little known fact): Did you know that Ian James (Sabre Sailor) has bought a Heron, which he will sail with his Grand-daughter. Ian has sailed a Heron before at a Na-tional Championship – way back in 1983/84. He finished a respectful 16th overall out of 63 competitors. The class is expecting several the past champions to make the trek over from the East and try to their luck, hopefully we can have a WA boat be the successor. Also, a note we will be in the need of Volunteers over the Christmas Period, so please if you have a spare day or two please come on down and lend a hand in assisting this great club and the Heron Associa-tion. Vice Commodore Clayton Erwin

Javelin Travels Javelin South Pacific Championship
Easter 2018
Takapuna Boating Club
Auckland, New Zealand
Five PDSC Javelins made the trip to Takapuna: the Commodores, Dale and Paul, Richard and Enfys, Billy and Dan and even the Fat Boys decided it was time for an annual sail. The venue was beautiful with a grassy lawn to rig on and a wide expanse of water upon which to sail. The weather was also beautiful but the breeze was a bit dodgy for yacht racing for those of us who haven’t lake sailed for a while.
The container caused some stress for Greg but he managed to sort it out with the help of the Kiwis who parked it in a public carpark. Lucky there were no rangers on the prowl over Easter. The training day had not a breath of wind but we reassembled our boats and had a great swim on the race-course nonetheless.
The racing commenced the following day with an invitation race in zero knots of breeze but four knots of cur-
rent, and the Fat Boys sealed their fate by drifting over the finish line first: their best result of the regatta. When the regatta proper started up Richard and Enfys showed remarkable resili-ence in different offshore breezes, finding ways to finish up front despite not everything going to plan. The rest of the fleet struggled with some good races and some bad. The timeout rule was inevitably tested and amended as it always is. I’m not really sure why it is ever inserted in small fleet events.
Coming into the final day, Richard and Enfys led the perennial Kiwi South Pa-cific champion Phil McNeil and crew for this regatta Craig Gilberd; with Dale and Paul in third, Billy, Dale and the Fat Boys tied for fifth, and the Commo-dores in double figures. With the breeze almost as fickle as Craig Gil-berd’s back, a crew swap was author-ized by the race committee with 16 year-old Holly McNeil substituting onto Phlipnhel. Luckily she never needed to learn how to trapeze over those last two races and with Richard and Enfys scoring a couple of their worst results,
TAKAPUNA NZ
Brief History
The Maori place name Takapuna originally referred to a freshwa-ter spring that flowed from the base of North Head into a swamp behind Cheltenham Beach. In 1841 the wife of Eruera Maihi Patuone sold 9500 acres of Auck-land's North Shore to the Crown. Referred to as Takapuna Parish, the North Shore was surveyed and subdivided in 1844. In 1851 Governor Grey gifted back to Pat-uone 110 acres between the inlet beside Barry's Point Road and Takapuna Beach to use until his death (1872). This area included a Māori settlement known as Waiwharariki, on the small Shoal Bay headland now crossed by Esmonde Road. The earliest subdivisions of farm-land for suburban development were the "Hurstmere" estate in 1886 and the "Pupuke" Estate in 1889. The Takapuna and Milford Beach areas, as well as the land surrounding Lake Pupuke soon became popular spots for wealthy businessmen building summer homes to entertain in a rural surrounding, and eventual-ly, many moved here permanent-ly, commuting to work in Auck-land via ferry.

South Pacific Championships (Continued) Phlipnhel managed to win its fourth South Pacs. Richard and Enfys re-tained second position, Dale and Paul finished in third, Fat Boys sixth, Billy and Dan seventh, and the Commo-dores 11th. Richard and Enfys sailed brilliantly in difficult conditions and it was a shame they didn’t capitalize fully.
As usual in this fleet, the sailing was conducted in a fun spirit and the ca-maraderie on shore was excellent. Takapuna proved itself to be a nice holiday venue with club volunteers making us welcome. The PDSC burgee was presented to TBC at the presen-tation.
Thanks must go to Greg Moore for organizing everything for the trip and shouldering all the logistical stress. Also, thanks to Missy Cochrane for taking a heap of photos from the start boat, as well as to Christine
McGregor, Dixie Moore and Leslie Devine for looking after us all during the regatta. It was a great Easter sail-ing.

Preparations are well under way for
arguably the biggest regatta to be
hosted at PDSC – the International
14 World Championship. This will
encompass the World’s Team Racing
from the 29th – 31st Dec 2019 and
then the main World Championship
event from the 2nd – 10th Jan 2020.
We are expecting 60-70 boats from
the United Kingdom, Canada, United
States, Japan, Italy, Germany, maybe
France and of course a large showing
from all over Australia. This will
equate to approximately 120-140
sailors. Including their families plus
the race management team, on- and
off-water support crews, volunteers
and members, the club is going to be
buzzing!!
The regatta is only 18 months away
and there is lots of preparation to
do. We are keen to not only put on a
good sailing regatta, but really show-
case our beautiful family-friendly
welcoming sailing club and our
beautiful City, complete with fantas-
tic Western Australian summer sun-
shine and sea breezes. You may
have seen the logo and flags that
have been designed. Soon we will
have a website and you will be able
to follow us on Facebook. An organ-
ising committee with representation
from the 14 WA Association, PDSC
Management and other passionate
PDSC members has been formed as

I14 Worlds Organising Committee
perthsailing.org.au
Promotion: Ian Furlong Canteen/Bar: Lyn Devine Competitor Liaison: Stuart Sloss Club Facilities: Greg Moore Sponsorship: Hannah Wilson Treasurer: Drew Farrar The committee will be meeting monthly to ensure adequate plan-ning for such a huge event. Some of the current focuses are promotion including development of a promo-tional video; developing a sponsor-ship prospectus; finalising a venue for the presentation night and estab-lishing the international race com-mittee including an international jury, a requirement for hosting a World Championship under World Sailing regulations. Some of the or-ganising committee portfolios will require significant work and sub-committees will be needed. We wel-come any ideas and input from members. If you have some exper-tise that you would like to share with the organising committee, please get in touch. This is going to be a fantas-tic event and we hope the PDSC
membership will get behind it and help make this mammoth event one to remember. Finally, we wish the best of luck for
our PDSC members travelling to San
Francisco next month to compete in
the 2018 Worlds at the Richmond
Yacht Club – Rear Commodore Stu-
art Sloss, Immediate Past Commo-
dore Graeme Everett and our Com-
modore Andrew Wilson joined by
two past PDSC members, brothers
Courtney and Elliot Mahar. Our WA
team will be spreading the word of
Perth 2020, showing the promotional
video and selling Perth for a fantastic
family holiday destination. Following
the San Francisco regatta, we will
share the I14 Perth Worlds promo-
tional video on our website and Face-
book and planning will be in full
swing!

Dynamic Duo Invade Gotham
The adventure began when four
boats were carefully packed into a
shipping container at Phil’s yard in
Nedlands and so began the journey.
As it happened, the journey was also
a historical path which eventually led
to the amalgamation of the Interna-
tional and Australian fleets in 1996.
The young PDSC team consisted of:
Phil Harris
Luke (Robin) Devine
Bill Devine
Garry Sloss
Tony Carr

Fred Everett (Team Psychologist)
The race course was set from a start
line just west of Alcatraz Island with
the top mark positioned just under
the Golden Gate Bridge. The scene
was set for some exhilarating racing
against a breathtaking backdrop.
The Australian 14 Footers dominated
with a superior lightweight design and
larger sail area however the Interna-
tional 14s made up with expert boat
handling and skill to match the Aus-
sies. The Internationals were also su-
perior at bottom mark roundings

Canada, UK and Japan.
The WA boats found the Bay wind and
wave conditions similar to Perth how-

new and interesting challenges.
In all, 26 boats made the trip from
Australia. Phil and Luke teamed up in

The proposed venture to enter the
Australian 14 Footers in the Open
World 14 Footer Championship to
be sailed in San Francisco was dis-
cussed at length at the recent An-
nual Conference Meetings. Various
points were agreed by the State
Delegates, summarised as follows:
We understand that the Champion-
ship will commence 1/9/89 and will
include one invitation race and the
usual seven championship races.
We understand that the measure-
ment “base parameters” for 14 Foot-
ers competing in this event will be
as per the Australian 14 Footer Con-
stitution and Rules i.e. The 14 Foot
Dinghy.
Phil Dawson from N.S.W. is respon-
sible for coordination of travel and
accommodation.
The transportation by ship of the
boats is to be organised by a com-
mittee including a representative

We are proposing to send approx. 15
boats with crews and supporters
totalling approx. 50.

The PDSC Archives contain history
and memorabilia in many different
forms – newspaper cuttings, photo-
graphs, textiles, trophies, shields,

editions of Spraytalk, the following
article was discovered. It appeared
in the April 1983 edition and is titled
‘A Touch of History…..’. The author is
unknown.
Perth Dinghy Club
Season 1903-4
The past season, which was the ini-
tial one of the Perth Dinghy Club,
was highly successful, both financial-
ly and in the excellent racing which it
provided.
The Club was formed shortly after
the conclusion of the 1902-3 season,
and many, nay almost all the small
boat enthusiasts flocked to its stand-
ard, or perhaps it would be more
accurate to say burgee, with the re-
sult that the membership roll al-
ready totals over 40.
From the inception of the club until
last Christmas the secretarial duties
were in the able hands of Mr. S.E.
Uhde, and to his energy, together
with that of a keen and enthusiastic
committee, is due in no small meas-
ure the success achieved by the club
during its first season.
After Mr. Udhe’s resignation, the
reins of office were taken up by Mr.
F.E. Dew, who was assisted by the
committee, consisting of Messrs A.
Roche, C.W. Garland, H. Barton, W.
Hale and L. Joubert, with Mr. H.
Carter as commodore. In electing the
last-named gentleman, the members
showed a nice sense of discernment
in recognising the valuable services
rendered dinghy sailing in West Aus-
tralia by Mr. Carter.
With a member’s subscription of Five
Shillings and no entrance fee, it is not
to be supposed that the club require
a very larger ledger to keep their ac-
counts in, still a glance at the balance
sheet presented at the general
meeting discloses the fact that the
receipts totalled £17 1s. 6d., while
the expenditure amounted to £14
17s. 8d., 14 of which were given
away in prizes, leaving a credit bal-
ance of £2 3s. 10d.
October 24th was the date set down
for the initial race, and four starters,
viz., Ena, Jonah, Hero and Wonga,
came to the line. This race calls for no
comment as owing to the almost to-
tal absence of wind, only two fin-
ished, and they after 6.40p.m. the
race being declared off. “
Just as a matter of interest, £17.1s.
6d. would today be equal to about
$34.15 and £14.17s.8d would equal
about $29.77!!

Did You Know?
Kings Park is one of the largest inner city parks in the world and is visited by more than six million tourists each year — that’s three times the population of the State.
It’s also the location of the State War Memorial Precinct, which is the centrepiece of the ANZAC Day dawn service on April 25, as well as the Remembrance Day services at 11am on November 11 each year.
Here are some other interesting facts about our beloved Kings Park:
• Kings Park is larger than the world famous Central Park in New York
• Our park measures up at
400.6 hectares, whereas New York’s Central Park is 341 hectares.
• It was officially opened on
10 August 1895. The park was originally called Perth Park and was renamed in 1901 to King’s Park.
• The Botanic Garden has been a fixture in the park since 1962. It’s home to more than half of Australia’s 25,000 plant species.
• Jacob’s Ladder is a set of stairs located at the end of Cliff Street. It has 242 steps and is a dream for residents to exercise in the
www.bgpa.wa.gov.au/kings-park
early morning or at lunch time. Your legs will feel it the following day.
• There have been guides walks in the park since 1984. The volunteer guides cover all aspects of the park includ-ing the local Noongar names and traditions. Walks are varied according to the Noongar season Djilba-Kambarang (July–October) for the wildflower season; the Mukuru for May and June, and the Birak-Djeran for No-vember to April.
• The Kings Park Festival runs throughout September, and you can expect Live music concerts, outdoor exhibi-tions, guided walks and ac-tivities cater for all ages and interests. Some of the most beautiful trees in Kings Park will also be dressed to im-press — the highlight will be the Queen’s Tree which will be dressed in a truly regal outfit.
• Kings Park is within easy reach of our club and is well worth the visit any time of the year.
