REMEMBERING KATHRYN
When I first joined the team at Living Rock, I was touring the different programs and being introduced to a variety of staff. Nervous and new, I found everybody so hospitable and welcoming, but one face shone brighter than the rest. Kathryn Stachyra’s. After our first conversation we just naturally hugged and were immediate friends. I was fortunate enough to spend time with Kathryn outside of work, and witnessed first‐hand the effect her shining personality had on the youth at the Rock. Exuding passion and creativity in everything she did, Kathryn moved on from the Rock to continue her selfless work with Hamilton PAWS. Although her time here was short, not a single day was wasted and she has made an impact on everybody she met. “Kathryn was a dynamic Social Worker. I’ve never met anybody who could match the excitement of the most
energetic youth, as Kathryn did.” ‐Karen Craig, Program Director, Living Rock
Your light and love will be missed but never forgotten, Kathryn. ‐ Veronica, Living Rock

The Rock Review
SPRING 2017
Serving youth since 1985
“I was 15 and was on my own. I was working and going to school and could not afford to play hockey. I had heard about Rock hockey through a friend. I cycled from Clappisons
Corners in Flamborough to come to the Rock. I value the Food Bank and the Evening Program, as well as being able to have dinner before hockey.”

ROCK IN ACTION
“It was hockey that got me here and kept me here.”
It is the dedicated volunteer team that makes Rock‐In‐Ac on possible, so youth like Nick can enjoy hockey. During the spring and summer months, volunteer numbers decrease, so if you have extra me and are looking to make a meaningful difference in a youth's life, please consider volunteering with one of Living Rock's programs. The ONLY youth‐focused food bank (Underground Rock Shop) in Hamilton, is open for 16 hours a week. Youth can obtain clothing for work or school, hygiene products and food with dignity.

GREETINGS FROM
ALAN CRAIG EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
It is exci ng and encouraging to share the story of the Rock. Doors have opened to speak and lead worship at a variety of groups and churches. I spoke about Nehemiah at Bethel Gospel Tabernacle. Nehemiah takes interest, asks ques ons and listens to his people. He hears the news about Israel. The “walls have been broken down and the gates have been burned with fire”. Walls and gates are defensive. Through trauma and abuse, youth have experienced “burned walls” and may lack boundaries in their lives. They are vulnerable and at risk of opening their “gates” and lies to nega ve influences, like drugs and violence. Living Rock is open daily at lunch hour for Gatherings and spiritual support. We need volunteers who may be willing support these teams. There are also Saturday weekend volunteer roles.
Nice weather is coming and the Harvest Food Truck will soon be on the road. Thanks to the Future Fund with the City of Hamilton some basic costs will be covered for the truck. We will need volunteer cooks and helpers for the Food Services and Hospitality Program. There was some new sponsorship through Edith Turner Founda on with Hamilton Community Founda on to enhance the work in the Food Services Program. Youth love learning from Daniel, the Cook. Today, a new “coconut curry soup” was being made for the Gathering.
Speaking of soup, we are grateful for generous community care and support at Soupfest 15. We are thankful to the local restaurants that stepped up and gave us a taste of their delicious, complex and wonderful soups, to make Soupfest an awesome celebra on. There were lots of posi ve comments about the entertainment and Toonie and Westjet Raffle. Thank you for joining this important event.
We look forward to the 21st Annual Golf Tournament on Thursday, June 1st, 2017. Thank you to the dedicated commi ee who organizes this amazing event.
If you have an idea to raise funds, call us for a “Third Party Fundraising” booklet. There s ll are cri cal needs to be covered before the summer. Please keep youth, staff, volunteers and students in prayer as we maintain a safe and effec ve centre for youth. Consider how you may be able to help or support. Blessings this Easter. We are grateful for God’s faithfulness, and celebrate new beginnings and life in Christ. Thanks again for keeping updated and for your support and care.

CHANGE Change, it’s never easy. Leaving your comfort zone to a place that seems
too foreign to you.
An act of being different.
Why are we afraid to be different?
Nowadays culture has increased, marriages never seem to last, love seems to
fail somehow, being commi ed is like pulling your own teeth.
Somehow, somewhere there is a compe on, to be be er than one
another that results in young children dying, mothers crying.
Knowledge seems to be less of a characteris c and social media became
a lifestyle.
What am I looking for?
I’m lost in my own beliefs, wan ng to change and expec ng a change but I’m not
being the change.
“If you’re not a part of the solu on, you’re part of the problem.”
Being a Chris an can be overwhelming because of the world’s desires but
overcoming the world’s desire is the defini on of power.
If I expect a change, I need to make a change, it only took one to lead a na on, it
only took a na on to give one power.
What do you believe in?
What do stand for?
“If you stand for nothing, you’ll fall for everything”.
Don’t just stand out, but stand up.
We need to change and make this change us, change our perspec ve of life.
Let’s be different, change the way we see things and fix what’s missing.

THE POWER OF PRAYER
Although prayer me is offered during 12 scheduled hours throughout the week, Living
Rock is open to taking wri en or verbal prayer requests and one‐on‐one sessions at any me.
HELP BE A LIGHT AT LIVING ROCK Our lights are burning 4,368 hours a year.
The heat and air condi oning keep our program spaces comfortable. This hidden cost of $2,800 a month is not currently covered through funding. We depend on your generosity to con nue our work. Anything you can do to help Living Rock Youth Centre is greatly appreciated. Our organiza on relies on the generous dona ons made by the community. Every penny counts! Your dona on will make a huge difference to the youth and children who are supported through Living Rock’s programs and services. We encourage you to set up a tour or join a community lunch and visit us at the Rock to see how your dona on is being used and meet the people your dona on is helping.
“It’s easy to sponsor the youth directly. Join me in sponsoring the power behind the smiles, the costs you can’t see.” ‐Rock Donor
Throughout the day the youth are u lizing their newly developed janitorial and cooking skills. They will also par cipate in workshops
on health & safety, budge ng, substance use awareness and resume wri ng.
You could feel the excitement in the air of the Gathering Room as 5 TRI‐Rock participants graduated the first phase of Living Rock’s employment readiness program. After spending 8 weeks of preparing food, cleaning, workshopping budgets and health
and safety, these youth are now prepared to spend the next 8 weeks in their community placements.
Full of pride and confidence, more youth returned to the Rock to celebrate the completion of the TRI‐Rock Program. 3 of these youth even maintained full time employment at their placements after their subsidy has expired.
While holding her certificate in one arm, and her baby in the other, one graduate stated:
"After the last 8 weeks I have learned a lot about myself. Being in TRI‐Rock helped me see and do things I never thought I would".

Two years ago Living Rock added an additional award category titled the Foodie Choice Award. Many of the restaurants have mentioned through the years that it would be amazing to have their culinary skills judged by members from their own sector.
This year Soupfest brought excitement by creating the Souper Chef Challenge, hosted by Jane Allison!
