Dave McCann Says
Good evening and welcome to The Royal British
Legion Stadium for tonight’s home league fixture
against Colne FC. First of all may I welcome
Colne’s management team and all associated
with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.
Over the last 10 days the club, players, Tommo and I have been through a
range of emotions due to happenings both on and off the pitch. On the
pitch we’ve had 2 fantastic results and performances and 1 poor result and
performance. This time last week we let ourselves down with our perfor-
mance and the result was evidence of that, however, on Saturday we pro-
duced a really good gritty performance that saw us beat a strong Bootle side
1-0. More of the same character and mentality will be needed tonight by
the players. Off the pitch we lost our and possibly the leagues best goal
scorer in Jack Sowerby to our neighbours Fleetwood Town FC. Everyone at
the club is immensely proud of what Jack has achieved and we wish him all
the best. The club worked hard to provide Jack with the environment he
needed to thrive and he certainly did that this season.
Tonight we face Colne who I consider to be contenders for a top 5 finish this
season. They are a very strong side and have good resources to call upon if
required. We played poorly at their place earlier on in the season and are
determined to prove that we can match what they have to offer tonight.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture….
UP THE GATE!
Ashton Athletic 4-0 Squires Gate
Brocstedes Park
Attendance: 56
Tuesday 11th November 2014
Squires Gate travelled to Ashton Athletic on Tuesday night looking
to continue their good form which saw Gate beat Runcorn Town 7-2
on the previous Saturday. Gate came into the game with an un-
changed side with only Jonathan Hothersall dropping from the
bench.
It wasn't the start the game would have wanted as with just four minutes on the clock Ashton opened the scoring. Sloppy defending from Gate allowed Ashton the room and time to easily score.
Gate had the chance to equalise soon after top goals scorer Jack Sowerby broke away from the last man but his tame shot could only find the goalkeepers gloves. Gate had another chance soon after, the ball knocked down by Jack Sowerby to Alex Murphy but his shot fell wide of the post. Gate's defence withstood a lot of pressure throughout the first half but stood firm. The home side doubled their lead on the 40th minute though joint manager Ben Kay, with a sweet volley just inside the area.
Into the second half and no improvement was made from the away
side. Gate struggled to really get a hold of the game and were con-
stantly hounded put by an impressive organised Ashton side. Gates
day was made worse with a couple of minutes of madness. First
Sam Bailey scored directly from the corner kick then just a minute
later Adam Gilchrist made it two in two minutes. Late chances for
both Chris Anderson and Jack Sowerby but Ashton saw out the
game. After a weekend that saw Gate run out winners against Run-
corn, in every way imaginable with Flair, fighting spirit and passion,
Gate Boss now needs to re install these qualities to the team as to-
night all was dreadfully missing..

Squires Gate 1-0 Bootle
Royal British Legion
Attendance: 85
Saturday 15th November 2014
Squires Gate welcomed Bootle Fc to the Royal British legion stadium for their
north west counties premier league encounter, Gate leapfrog the Bucks in the
table with a 1-0 win.
Gate started the game without star striker Jack Sowerby who this week signed
for neighbours Fleetwood Town, within just two minutes on the clock Jake
Forshaw beat his marker on the edge of the area but saw his curled shot hit the
post, on 10 minutes Bootle threw bodies on the line to deny a certain
goal .Gate's Alex Murphy inches from the games opener. Bootle's Michael Rob-
erts had their first effort of any substance on 17 mins, his shot flying just wide of
the upright. Gate'sMark Buchan brought a smart save from the stags keeper
Joshua Clark, the keeper throwing his legs in the way to deny Buchan, as the
first half drew to a close it was the away side ended the half the stronger with 2
efforts going close.
Gate Josh Westwood came close just after the break, his header skimming the
wrong side of the post, moments later Bootle had three attempts saved on the
line in a good old fashioned goal mouth scramble,as often happens in football
Gate went straight up the pitch and took the lead a minute later, Alex Murphy
scoring directly from a long range free kick on 53 minutes after nobody in the ar-
ea made any connection and the ball flew in unchallenged. Bootle felt they had a
strong case for a penalty on 70 mins but the ref waived them away. Gate almost
doubled their lead on 72 mins. , the Bootle keeper Clark just doing enough to
slow Murphy's shot, the ball hitting the post and rebounding into the keepers
arms.
Two minutes later gate's Harry Dunn had the ball in the back of the net but the
effort was controversially ruled out for offside. Gate sub James Edmonds came
close to a debut goal, heading against the foot of the post. With Bootle commit-
ting men forward in search of an equaliser Gate continued to create chanc-
es, Jack Cook running into Bootle territory and when he seemed all set to seal
the win Jamie Hay threw himself at the goal bound effort to deny him.
A delighted Gate Manager Dave McCann added "After all that's happened at the
club over the past 7 days the result and performance was excellent, we had to
defend for long periods particularly in the 2nd half but we did so really well. We
created plenty of goal scoring opportunities but their keeper pulled off some fine
Match Preview Good evening and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium, for tonight’s NWCFL fixture
between Squires Gate and Colne. The two sides head into tonight’s game on the back of al-
ternate results, after the weekend. Last week was a rollercoaster week for everyone involved
with Squires Gate, on the back of a 7-2 win at Runcorn Town, Gate then travelled to Ashton
Athletic last Tuesday, which ended in a 4-0 defeat. By the end of the week, news was then
revealed by the club.
Jack Sowerby, who had netted 21 goals in 20 games, was sold to League 1 and local side
Fleetwood Town. A great youth prospect, who was being watched for several weeks by quite
a few clubs, and has now signed a professional contract! We wish Jack all the best for the
future, and who knows where he will go from here.
Gate were without Sowerby for their game on Saturday against Bootle. However, we were
still creating chances - having two chances cleared off the line, hitting the woodwork twice,
and having various one on one chances. Both sides were defending well in the first half, and
it was going to take something special to separate the sides. Up stepped Alex Murphy, with a
free kick on the corner of the 18 yard box, left footed past the wall and into the bottom corner,
putting Gate 1-0 up with over half an hour to play. Bootle then kept attacking the Gate back
four, but resisting well and managing to keep them out. The game ended 1-0, but it’s fair to
say Bootle will be up in the top half come the end of the season.
Onto today’s game, Colne on the back of a 6-0 defeat at home to high flyers Glossop North
End, will want to get back to winning ways straight away. The last time these sides met, was
only 2 months ago. On a cold and wet Tuesday night, Colne controlled the game and walked
away with the 3 points, Gate just couldn’t get into the game.
Top scorer for Colne, Danny Boyle, has netted an impressive 19 goals in all competitions
and will be looking to add to his tally tonight. As Colne sit 7th in the league, 4 points behind
Nelson, they could close that gap with a win tonight. However, with only 4 fixtures tonight,
Gate could go as high as 8th if they win and results go their way.
Both sides have been on great form as of late. Gate are unbeaten at home in their last 4
games, winning 3 of them. However, Colne have won their last 4 away games. Altogether, in
their last 6 matches - Gate have lost 1 and Colne have lost 2.
We would like to thank you for your continued support, and we hope you have a safe journey
home. Be sure to come in and pick up one of our delicious meat and potato pies and a hot
drink on this cold Tuesday night!
One more thing,
Enjooooooy the game!

Colne
Colne F.C. were formed in January 1996, by a group of like-minded people under the wing of now Chairman Dave Blacklock.
The enthusiasts combined their strengths and knowledge of non league football, and arrangements were made for a new club
to use the vacant Holt House Stadium, once used by the Dynamoes in the North West Counties Football League Division Two.
z
Colne FC’s first ever competitive game was on the 17th August 1996 against Middlewich and the result ended in a 1 – 0 defeat.
The team was then managed by Keith Mason, but after his resignation soon after, Denzil Hart was appointed to the hot seat.
His first game was a 6 – 0 defeat away at Ashton Town, but just two games later Colne FC recorded their first ever victory
thumping Bacup Borough 5 – 2. The highlight of the season, coming when the reserves won the BEP Cup at Clitheroe’s Shaw-
bridge ground.
The clubs fourth season was eagerly awaited, but in September 2000 manager Hart left the club by mutual agreement.
Player John Lister was placed in temporary charge and his appointment was made permanent a month later. Lister learned
lessons from this campaign and in 2001/02 finished 14th .
In the summer of 2002 James Webster took control of the club, to become the youngest chairman in the league at the age of
24. James was a player at the club with plenty of experience and along with his father who was vice chairman, had a strong
desire to see the current side emulate the success of its predecessors.
Season 2002/03 started well enough, but in December 2002 John Lister resigned as Manager.
Paul Lynch took over as manager and the improvements continued, but in August 2003, Paul was offered the position of man-
ager at Unibond side Rossendale United and subsequently left.
Webster responded immediately by appointing Nigel Coates as the new manager as well as player Gary Rishton as his number
2. Nigel had played for the Dynamoes, being in the FA Vase winning team and had experience of management at local rivals
Nelson.
Season 2003/04 brought back the glory days to Colne with a string of successes. In the League Colne had to play catch up after
a successful cup run, but ended the season 10 points clear in Division two, scoring 102 goals in their 38 games.
We completed the double by winning the Division Two Trophy 1 – 0 over Great Harwood.
The season was capped by an amazing run in the FA Vase for a North West Counties Football League Division Two club, they
progressed all the way to the semi-finals, (via an incredible 1 – 2 away win at AFC Wimbledon) before being defeated over two
legs 4 – 3 on aggregate to AFC Sudbury.
As the season progressed attendances started to rise as the local population realised we were no longer the whipping boys of
the league, and the famous RED ARMY was formed.
Colne took little time in adjusting to life in the First Division, another FA Vase run and a creditable 10th place was secured in
2004-/05
Consolidation has followed and Colne FC’s highest league positions to date have been 5th in season 2007-08 and the same
again in 2010-11.
At the beginning of season 2005-6 the senior sides at Colne were officially amalgamated with what was Foulridge Minors Foot-
ball teams. This adds the junior section to the resources of the club and the following season was awarded Charter Standard
status.
In November 2013 Colne’s manager for the past 10 years stepped down from the hot seat and former Colne player Steve Cun-
ningham was appointed manager, with another former Colne favourite Ted Cockett as his No.2 and Coach.
Steve and Ted have ambitious plans for the club and wasted no time in bringing in a few new faces to boost the playing squad,
consolidating for the rest of the season but with big hopes and plans for the following seasons.

Squires Gate looked tip top, as they posed in
their new strip before the kick off. But with only
ten minutes on the clock and with Gate looking
the better side, up popped a banana skin, and
the visitors took the lead when Gate lost the ball in the visitors half, and were
dearly punished when Colne striker Jason Hart, caught Ben Fletcher way off his
line, and neatly slotted home the opening goal. Gate were looking confident
attacking and defended more thoroughly, but despite efforts from Andy Rich-
ards and Seydou Bamba, they were unable to find a gap in the Colne defence.
Half time came and went, and despite Jack Sowerby and Ben Fishwick making
inroads there was no finishing touch. Plus with all the attacking the home side
were doing, there was always the danger of a space for a side the calibre of
Colne to take advantage. Craig Carney, came on as sub, for his debut, and was
immediately involved in the action, he raced to pick up a loose ball on the half
way line and crossed to Andy Richards, who beat defender and keeper, looking
certain to score, only to be brought down, by a dive from the keeper, and be-
fore the referee could make his mind up to award a penalty or not, in raced
Ben Fishwick to blast home Gate's equaliser. Then before the visitors could
compose themselves, Andy Harvey who had replaced the injured Jamie
Bryson, at left back very early in the game, picked up the ball in his own half
raced forward, inter passed with sub Craig Carney, and then took the ball at
the defence racing past defenders into the penalty area before unleashing a
pile driver, into the bottom left corner of the net, to win the game for Squires
Gate and elevate them to their highest place in the table for two seasons.
Chris Churchman came on as sub, and his fresh legs helped Gate keep control

Ones To Watch
Alex Coleman
The big Centre back came through the ranks at
Burnley from the age of 7. He also has experi-
ence on loan at Droylsden in the Conference
North. A player who has the quality to be play-
ing at a higher level than this, he'll be a big part
in Colnes plans
Simon Nangle
Another player with experience at a higher level
Nangle played at Clitheroe before joining Colne.
The central midfielder is a key part in how Colne
play. Has the ability to both assist goals and put
in his fair share of tackles.
Danny Boyle
The attacker has scored 13 goals in the league
this season and 6 in the cup. Listing Padiham as
one of his former clubs he scored in the reverse
fixture when the two sides met earlier in the year.
He also won player of the month for October.

NWCFL Newsletter The leading clubs at the top of both divisions all picked up points in the weekend's league fix-
tures.
In the Premier Division, league leaders Runcorn Linnets left it late to secure victory over St
Helens Town, with Kyle Hamid striking the only goal of the game with nine minutes remain-
ing.
By contrast, second placed Glossop North End had the points in the bag by half time at Colne,
being four goals up and eventually running out 6-0 winners. Tom Bailey and Lee Blackshaw
both scored twice for the visitors.
1874 Northwich celebrated the second anniversary of the club's formation at their home
game against Nelson, but both sides failed to break the deadlock in a match that ended goal-
less.
1874 remain in third place but are now level on points with Ashton Athletic, who beat Bar-
noldswick Town 2-0 at Brocstedes Park thanks to second half goals from Adam Gilchrist and
Paul Watson. The result keeps Barlick in the relegation zone.
AFC Liverpool are fifth following a 3-1 win over Abbey Hey. Brandon Zibaka gave the visitors
an early lead, but two goals from Ryan Cox and another from Steve Jones ensured victory for
the home side.
Winsford United emerged victorious from the Cheshire derby against Congleton Town at
Booth Street, an Alex Byrne penalty three minutes after the break securing a 1-0 win.
A single goal also earned a win for Squires Gate at home to Bootle, courtesy of Alex Murphy's
goal eight minutes into the second half.
Two first half goals from Josh Harper put Maine Road in the driving seat at Stockport Sports,
and although Derryn Offori pulled a goal back for the Saxons on the hour, a late third goal
from Nicholas Alexander made sure that Road collected all three points from a 3-1 win.
Alsager Town were seconds away from victory at Silsden, but Ryan Wintle's goal on the stroke
of half time was cancelled out by Joe Jalìl's 90th minute equaliser.
AFC Blackpool remain in second bottom spot but collected a valuable point from a 0-0 draw
at West Didsbury & Chorlton
