Our Lady of Czestochowa Feast : August 26
The image of Our Lady in Czestochowa, Poland is among that small group of Black Madonnas recognized throughout the entire world, largely due to public piety shown by Pope John Paul II. The image, which is a Byzantine icon, is sometimes called Our Lady of Jasna Gora after the name of the monastery site in which it has been kept for six centuries. The history is that St. Ladislaus determined to save the image from the repeated invasions of the Tartars by taking it to the more secure city of Opala, his birthplace. This journey took him through Czestochowa, where he decided to rest for the night. During this brief pause in their journey, the image was taken to Jasna Gora [meaning "Bright Hill"]. There it was placed in a small wooden church. The following morning, after the portrait was carefully replaced in its wagon, the horses refused to move. Accepting this as a heavenly sign that the portrait was to remain in Czestochowa, St. Ladislaus had the image solemnly returned to the Church. How did she receive the throat and cheek wounds?
During a siege by the Tartars, an arrow pierced the image and inflicted a scar on the throat of the Blessed Virgin.
Later, in 1430, Hussites stole and vandalized the precious image, breaking it into three pieces. Then one of the robbers drew his sword, struck the image and inflicted two deep gashes. While preparing to inflict a third gash, he fell to the ground and writhed in agony until his death. The two slashes on the cheek of the Blessed Virgin, together with the previous injury to the throat, have always reappeared -‐ despite repeated attempts to repair them.
Why is She Black?
The darkness is ascribed to various conditions [e.g. accumulated residue from candles], of which its age is primary. However, the shrine was destroyed by fire, but the picture was not burned -‐ however, the flames and smoke had darkened it and from that day it has been known as the "Black Madonna."
The miracles attributed to Our Lady of Czestochowa are numerous and spectacular. The original accounts of these cures and miracles continue to be documented in the archives of the Pauline Fathers at Jasna Gora.
Relig ious Art Enrichment Friday, March 21
In January, the students were introduced to meeting Mary, who, as the Mother of Jesus, begins the New Testament History. In March, we fol low the History of the Catholic Church into the catacombs to learn about the ancient Christ ian symbols and the l ives of the early Christians. The students wil l dupl icate the efforts of the early Christians by creating a "fresco" with plaster and painting a Christian symbol on the fresco. It is educat ional, prayerful, fun and messy. We hope you wi l l be able to join us in the St. Boniface School gym as we discover how the Catacombs revealed the early Christian mysteries and preserved the foundation of our Catholic Faith. The Season of Lent The 40 days of Lent are traditionally a period of prayer, sacrifice and spiritual renewal. During this time, the students are encouraged to pray for others, do a personal act of kindness such as cleaning their room, being kind to their siblings, and a personal sacrifice such as offering up chocolate or soda pop. They put their sacrifices on a paper cross and attached it to the large cross in the main hallway.
Lenten Mission Boxes Each child received a Lenten Mission box to save money for Catholic Relief Services. Mission jars are also located in each classroom. The funds will be collected during Lent from home and school and given to both Catholic Relief Services and St. Joseph School and Church in Nigeria, Africa. Fr. Samuel Kalu, who works in the Ecclesiastical Tribunal Diocesan Office, grew up in St. Joseph Parish in Nigeria.

ISTEP Tests March 10 to March 20, 2014
The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+) program is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (Grades 4 and 6), and Social Studies (Grades 5 and 7). In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted in November 2000 by the Indiana State Board of Education. All students in grades 4 to 6 will take the following Applied Skills Assessment. These tests will begin Tuesday, March 11 until Friday, March 14. Make up sessions will be the following week. Day 1 Mathematics Session 1 English/Language Arts Session 2 Day 2 English/Language Arts Session 3 Day 3 Science (grades 4 and 6) Session 4 Social Studies (grade 5) Session 4 From April 28 to May 9, the ISTEP+ Multiple-‐Choice Assessment will be given to the students. All students will take the April ISTEP on computer.
What You Can Do to Help Make ISTEP Successful PARENTS 1. Attendance. Children need to be present every day of testing. 2. Rest. It is important for students to be well rested. 3. Nutrition. It is important students start the day with a good breakfast the morning of testing and dinner the night before. Students should bring a healthy snack for the morning break. 4. Support. Students need encouragement and support to do their best. STUDENTS 1. Read each question completely and carefully. 2. If you have time, return and check your answers. 3. Do not panic if you do not know the answer to a question. Mark that question and return to it later. 4. Show all of your work when asked. 5. Write in clear, concise and complete sentences. Wearing of the Green! We will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on Monday, March 17. The students may wear green accessories with their uniform on this day. No shorts or sleeveless tops! Report Cards Friday, March 14 is the end of the 3rd quarter with 47 days. Reports cards will be sent home on Wednesday, March 19, 2014. Please discuss this report card with your child to provide encouragement and motivation.
Blue Knight Auction St. Boniface Gifts from Each Grade Level Each year a gift is made by all the students from each grade to donate to the Blue Knight Auction. The 6th grade will imprint their thumbprint and write their first name on a large ceramic item and then it will be hand painted and glazed by “All Fired Up”. They have done this for several years and the ceramic item is always beautiful, useful and unique. It is a desired item. The 5th grade is making a delightful cross that resembles a stained glass window. Each child will color a picture of a saint on transparent material, shrunk, and arranged artistically within an antique frame. Mrs. Dusty Skees worked with these students last year when they were in the fourth grade and produced a beautiful work of art that many parents bid on. The 4th grade is in need of a creative and resourceful parent to design and execute a gift from both fourth grade classes to donate to the Blue Knight Auction. We need to begin work on this soon. Please contact Sr. Lenore [email protected] or phone the school office 742-‐7913 to get more information or lead in this project. Thank you.
