St. Clement Catholic School
Dear Parents/ Guardians
Once again this year, September was a very busy month for us with all of the
changes that reorganization brings. We want to thank parents and staff as
well as our students for their patience and understanding as we made the
necessary changes.
Thanksgiving gives us all an opportunity to stop and reflect on the many
blessings bestowed upon us by God in our lives. God is good and we should
be thankful in prayer and grateful in our deeds and actions each and every
day. In our Catholic Schools, it is important to always remember that we need
to be grateful for the Catholic faith that is integrated into all aspects of our
learning and, in turn, let us take a few moments to thank God for Catholic
Education, eager students, dedicated staff and supportive and caring parents.
Lastly, our hearts are thankful as we prepare to celebrate the feast of
Thanksgiving. May God bless all of the families of our school community with
good health, great joy and peace in all the years to come. Have a blessed
Thanksgiving.

Terry Fox Run
It was 33 summers ago that a
young man from British Columbia
captivated Canadians with his
determination, commitment and
energy to find a cure for cancer. His
name was Terry Fox.
On Wednesday, September 30th
St. Clement held its annual Terry
Fox fundraising event to
commemorate Terry’s inspirational
Marathon of Hope. Grades JK-8
participated in the event which was
held at the school. The students
were dressed in red and white and
walked the track for about an hour
with music blasting in support of
this initiative. Thanks to Mrs. Ross
who led them in warm up activities.
Canadian students have been
tremendous supporters of Terry’s
dream to find a cure for cancer. This
phenomenal effort to raise funds and
awareness have raised millions of
dollars and are bringing us closer to
a cure. Students at St. Clement were
asked to donate to the Terry Fox
foundation by donating a Toonie for
Terry.
Over the past twenty-eight years, the
commitment of the St. Clement
community has resulted in total
donations of $132,213.22 towards
cancer research.

Girls’ Softball
On Wednesday, September 29th, the St. Clement Girls’
Softball team made their way to Eastgate Park to take part
of a tournament where they played 4 games against Our
Lady of Peace, Mother Cabrini, St. Gregory’s, and Nativity.
The girls played their hearts out and scored some
outstanding homeruns, caught some amazing fly balls,
and definitely made it hard to beat them. After losing two
games and tying one, the rain flooded the diamonds and
we had to call it a day. We returned the next morning and
the girls continued to play with determination!
Unfortunately, we lost our last game, but what the girls
gained from their experience was worth much more than
winning could ever give them. They learned how to play
with confidence, how to support and work as a team, and
how to always give it your best and never give up! Here’s
to looking forward to next year!

BOYS SOFTBALL
On Monday September 28th, the Intermediate Boys
Softball Team, won their divisional tournament, and
brought home another pennant to decorate the St.
Clement Gym. The boys played exceptionally well and
went undefeated, winning the final game of the tournament
against Our Lady of Peace by a score of 12-2. Every player
contributed to the team’s success, and a sincere thank you
goes out to their coaches Ms. Cashley, Mr. Daley, and Ms.
Ross, as well as all of the parents who helped transport
the team and those who cheered them on.

International Walk to School Day
Friday, October 9th is International Walk to School Day
and our CSPC agreed to participate once again in this
great event. Students are encouraged to get to
school by any non-motorized means. They can walk,
bike ride, roller blade and so on. By doing so, they will
not only contribute to their physical well-being, they will
also be helping the environment. On this day, the
students will be greeted by volunteer parents who will
ask the students if they walked to school and whose
class they are in. Those who did walk will receive a
Walk to School sticker and they will be counted towards
their classroom total. The classes with the highest
percentage of students counted will win a class prize
courtesy of CSPC.
Food for Thought
By Meghan Vrancart
In the spring, my son was told that he needed
to avoid wheat, sugar, and dairy to help him cope with
his allergies and asthma. At first, I was totally caught
off guard. It took me weeks to figure out what food to
buy and to try all the different products without breaking
the bank!
As I was doing my research to learn more
about food and allergies, I felt a lot of empathy towards
the parents and caregivers who have children with life-
threatening food allergies. Could you imagine sending
your child to school every day worrying that they may
come in contact with a deathly allergic food?
This is a reminder that parents, teachers and
students should have no peanuts, no tree nuts and no
food sharing in their classes. Did you know that the
percentage of kids with food allergies increased by
50% between 1997 and 2011?
If you are unsure what food to send to school
with your child, please don’t hesitate to ask for help. Eat
Right Ontario offers a free service where you can talk
to a dietician who will answer any questions you may
have (1-877-510-510-2, www.eatrightontario.ca ). Or
feel free contact the St. Clement main office and they
will put you in touch with someone who can answer
your questions.
Megan Vrancart is a mother of two children at St.
Clement. She has a degree in Physical and Health
Education, wrote a Master’s thesis related to food and
school policy, and is an Elementary teacher with the
Peel District School Board. She will be contributing a
Food for Thought article monthly.

Student Safety
a) No Call Zone
Between 2:30 and 3:30 each day our office receives numerous phone calls from parents with messages
for their children. Sometimes the lines are tied up or there is not sufficient time to communicate the
message to the students. In an effort to ensure that we do not miss one of the messages and not get it
to your child on time, we ask that you please ensure that arrangements are made the night before and
children know what they are to do after school. In addition, we encourage parents to send lunches, notes
and messages in the morning with their child( ren) in an effort to avoid interruptions in the classroom.
We understand that emergencies do happen and we will do our best to assist in these situations.
b) Fire Drills
In accordance with Ministry regulations, three fire drills will be conducted in the fall and three in the spring. While we
hope that a real fire emergency situation never arises, this practice helps prepare our students in the event of an
emergency.
c) Lockdowns Drills
It is a policy in the Toronto Catholic District School Board that all of its schools conduct a “Lockdown Procedure”
twice a year. This will be initiated should an emergency exist on the school property or in the surrounding
neighborhood. Part of the process is to practice “Lockdown Procedures” as we practice fire drills. The procedures that
we will follow have been recommended by the Board.
d) Teacher Parking Lot
Parking has and continues to be a problem at St. Clement. There are often not enough parking spots for staff. Once
again we respectfully ask that parents refrain from parking in the school lot after 8:30 and use the kiss and ride after
this time. Supervision begins at 8:40 in the main yard and it is suggested that you use the alternate drop off location.

(October 2015)
The whirlwind of September is now behind us and we already have many fond memories of the first
month of school and of course… the Fall Fun Fair! It was a wonderful day. Thanks to all who came
and had some fun, and a big thanks to those who volunteered some of their time!
It’s hard to believe it’s already October – a new month and a new calendar to mark up. October 9th
is Walk to School Day, so be sure to leave the car at home that day! The class with the most “walkers”
will win a pizza lunch.
As you’ve likely heard, our QSP magazine drive will now be starting on Tuesday, November 3rd.
Please assure your kids that the campaign (and all of the excitement that goes along with it!) will be
here before they know it! Also, we encourage everyone to jump-start their sales now by encouraging
their supporters to order/renew online at qsp.ca. All early sales will count towards our sales goals,
student prizes, rewards and even double day points!
Going on right now is our popular Acorn Cards fundraiser! Forms will be going out this week. You
will be delighted to see your child’s creation reproduced into customized artwork – to treasure as a
keepsake and to give as gifts. The deadline will be Monday, October 19th.
With October comes Hallowe’en – keep an eye out for information about our Hallowe’en Cupcake
Raffle taking place at the end of the month!
For those who are participating, don’t forget that this month’s Pizza Lunches are being held on
Friday, October 9th and Friday, October 23rd. The first Subway Lunch of the year will take place on
Thursday, October 22nd – look for the forms to go out shortly.
This past Tuesday, our new CSPC Executive was formed! We look forward to working together this
year to make CSPC the best it can be. Our next CSPC meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 27th
(please note that the date is the 27th, and not the 20th as stated on September’s agenda). It’s our
budget meeting – come out and have your say about how our hard-earned fundraising dollars are
spent!
Sincerely……………Your CSPC Team Jenn Casuccio & Katie Piccininni, Co-Chairs
Lisa Lippa, Treasurer
Natalie Young, Secretary
