Congrats on your graduation! While your time as a Notre Dame student may be over, you are still very much a part of the Notre Dame family, and the ND Club of St. Joseph Valley is here to help you stay connected to Notre Dame and get adjusted to the next phase of your life.
Having already spent four years in the South Bend area, you may already be familiar with many aspects of the area or you may have stayed in the Notre Dame bubble. Regardless of your exploration of the Michiana Area, there are many things to be aware of in St. Joseph Valley that you may have missed while in college. This is a guide with information that you may not know.
South Bend 101
• History: In 1673, Father Marquette, thought to be the first European to discover the St. Joseph River, reached the waterway approximately two miles from South Bend. In 1820, Pierre Navarre was the first European to settle permanently in the area as a representative of a fur company. The first industry in South Bend was developed in the in the late 1830s. In 1842, Fr. Sorin founded the University of Notre Dame.

• The Notre Dame Club of St. Joseph Valley (NDSJV) is a regional club for alumni, family, and friends of the University. The club offers members an opportunity to interact and network with ND alumni and friends through events that develop camaraderie, catholic spirituality, community service, and continuing education to support scholarships for current students.
• The Club helps run the Blue-Gold Game each spring, and proceeds benefit the Club’s scholarship fund.
• The Club also runs the men's basketball and football banquets.

How to Find an Apartment or House
• You may already be a pro at finding rental properties in the South Bend area, but if you are living farther away from campus or just want to get out of the student housing market, there are a variety of resources to help you.
• There are various free apartment finding services located online. These are just a few.

• Be very specific of your “absolute highest price” – which should include rent + car, or just rent based on your situation.
• Be very specific about distance away from work/school. Make sure you try your commute during the same hours you will be commuting each day before you agree to an apartment.
• With all services, you can search on their site based on neighborhoods, rent requirements, amenities, lease start dates, etc.
• Start looking early to make sure you find someplace to live by move-in date.
