T he 2013 season for St. Mary’s men’s soccer has begun, showcasing a prime freshmen class and key returners.

Among the strong returners is Heartland Conference Freshman of the Year Jack Wolf, who is campaigning for a successful sophomore season that mirrors his first year in which he netted a team-high four goals.

The Rattlers will also regain redshirt-senior Adam "Chuy" Muro, whose sudden absence last season due to injury jolted the squad. Before redshirting, Muro was an All-Conference player and top performer, and he is sure to add strength

in offense this season. "We had a chance to address the issues we

had last year," head coach Que Willis said. "We have pretty strong leadership and a good group of guys, and it only got better with this class.

"Everyone is obviously excited this time of year with the new year."

Finishing the 2012 season with a 5-11-1 mark, the Rattlers were ranked No. 4 in the Heartland Conference preseason poll, which was voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors.

In a conference that only advances the No. 1 team to the region tournament due to the lack of a conference tournament, the Rattlers will have something to prove, as being the top seed is their

only option. "Our goal is going to be to win conference,"

Willis said. "It’s a goal we set every year. It’s a realistic goal. I’d be lying if I said we’d be OK with anything less than winning conference."

Expected to aid St. Mary’s in a successful season will be the right combination of returners and a class of seven newcomers that includes six freshmen.

Freshman recruit Ryan Hoskins and All-American transfer Victor Luna from Mountain View College come highly anticipated for success, as well as Alex Gonzalez, who came to the Rattlers as a quality recruit that will hit the green for his first active season after redshirting last season.

Fernando Arias-Williamson, who wore No. 4 last season, is part of a strong core that returns for the Rattlers this fall.
