CHURCH DOOR SEALED
The center entrance door of this
Church will be sealed on the 28th of
October, the Feast of St. Jude, to
remind the faithful to prepare their
hearts for the Jubilee Year of Mercy
which begins on December 8, 2015, the
Solemnity of the Immaculate
Conception.
One of the traditions for a Jubilee Year
is the ceremonial opening of the Holy
Door in each of the four great Basilicas
in Rome.
Most Catholics will be unable to make
the pilgrimage to Rome during this
Jubilee Year; however, you can make a
pilgrimage within the Diocese of Las
Vegas by visiting the following
pilgrimage sites designated by His
Excellency Most Rev. Joseph A. Pepe,
D.D., J.C.D.:
Guardian Angel Cathedral, St. Joseph
Husband of Mary, St. Elizabeth Ann
Seton, and our very own St. Peter the
Apostle Parish here in Henderson.
The sealing of the Holy Door, the
opening of the Holy Door, and the
passing through the Holy Door during
the Jubilee Year have become
significant elements in the Church’s
Jubilee Year celebrations.
The center entrance door will be
opened again on December 13, 2015 on
the Third Sunday of
Advent, Gaudete Sunday.

CANONICAL- LITURGICAL FORUM
BY FR. GEM BANDIVAS, JCL, MBA, PhD
Dear Fr. Gem: I noticed that when people ask you to bless their cars or some religious objects you don’t normally wear your stole. I learned from my childhood that the blessing given while wearing your stole has more power and is more effective because your stole is a symbol of the charism given to you as a Vicar of Christ. Has this been changed? Also, I noticed some parishioners regardless of age kiss your hands instead of just shaking it right after Mass. What’s the idea behind the kissing of the priest’s hands?
--ERNIE, SPA Parishioner
Dear Ernie: Dear Ernie: I noticed that you’re getting too observant in everything that I do. Don’t get me wrong but I do like your being nosy. At least, your inquisitorial attitude leads me to write something on this column.
In response to your first inquiry, please know that certain liturgical blessings, such as the blessing of the congregation during a liturgical service, naturally demand the use of a stole due to fidelity to the rite. In such cases both the proper vesture and the correct liturgical formulas should be used without cutting corners out of expediency. The use of the stole for other blessings (cars or religious objects) is an eloquent symbol of the priestly condition and ministry and is thus to be commended whenever practical. The use of the stole, however, is not required for the validity of these sacramentals. Nor can it be said that a priest's blessing is "more powerful" or “more effective” when he wears the liturgical garb, since his ability to impart these blessings derives from his ordination and not from any external vesture. The Holy Father frequently imparts the apostolic blessing without a stole during the weekly recitation of the Angelus. Priests are also frequently called upon to bless people or objects of devotion on the spur of the moment with no possibility of donning a stole. In all such cases the effects of the blessing is the same regardless of vesture.
With respect to the second question, the gesture of kissing a person or object is an ancient liturgical tradition and symbolizes veneration of the said persons or objects.
Please allow me to mention a scholastic distinction between constituent blessing and invocative blessing. The effect of a constituent blessing is to transform the person being blessed in such a way that it is separated from profane use. Examples would include the consecration of a priest during ordination. Invocative blessings, on the other hand, call down God's blessing and protection upon a person or thing without sacralizing them in any way. During ordination the priest’s hands are anointed with chrism as a sign of consecration and of the change that has been effected in his soul. The custom of kissing his hands stems from a recognition of the fundamental change that has occurred and of the particular importance of the sign of the hands in priestly ministry. After ordination the priest uses his hands to hold the Eucharistic species during the consecration, to make the sign of the cross while absolving sins, to anoint the sick and dying, and on occasion to impart the sacrament of confirmation. A bishop, whose hands are also anointed at ordination, uses his hands to impart the sacrament of holy orders. The present Enchiridion of Indulgences foresees a plenary indulgence for all those who attend the first solemn public Mass of a newly ordained priest. Although there is no specific indulgence mentioned in the present enchiridion for kissing the hands of a priest, the custom of kissing the priest’s hands must have been associated with the indulgence given to people who attend his first Mass and kiss the hands of the newly ordained.
