SCRIPTURE CORNER DISCIPLINE It is no accident that the words “disciple” and “discipline” are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain pre-scribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as “disciplines.” We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Let-ter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to His cross. It is that same desire He encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observa-tion of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet. ——Copyright © J. ADORE NIGHT DANGEROUS CHURCH THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST 6:30PM, ST. THOMAS Come join Ennie Hickman, Ray Lacy, and crew for our new Adore series this Fall 2016 titled "Dangerous Church" based on the Book of Acts of the Apostles. This will be a night of Worship, Teaching, and Adoration on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 6:30PM at St. Thomas in Long Beach. Our music ministry will include Kyle J Li-zana, Cody Roth, Shea Michaels, Myles Ladner, Josh Foulon, and Matt Ladner. Living out the Gospel in the world today is seen as counter-cultural, radical, or even a bit dangerous. But hasn’t this always been the case? Has anything changed from the way the early Church struggled and celebrated? From the experience of conversion in the face of persecu-tion to the missionary journeys that call us beyond our comfort zones we have more in common with the first century followers of Jesus than we may realize. Join us this semester as we experience the “dangerous Church” from the book of Acts to our present day story of faith. Visit http://adoreministries.com/ for more information and locations around
the country.

AUGUST 21, 2016——TWENTY-FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
We are very excited to announce that the Life Teen Program will become the Catechetical model of religious education for our students in grades six through twelve effective September 2016! Over the past month, we have sent several mail-ings with information about the upcoming transition to parents of children in middle and high school whose chil-dren are registered in the religious education program. —Ashlie Moran, [email protected], 863-1610
HOW TO LOWER YOUR CATHOLIC SCHOOL TUITION? A lower rate of tuition is available for families with students in Grades K-12 at St. Vincent de Paul School, St. Patrick High School and Our Lady Academy. How do you avail of that lower rate of tuition? By apply-ing for parish subsidy—a form is available at the school office. To be eligible for the parish supplemented (or sub-sidized) rate of tuition, a registered family must be attend-ing Mass at St. Thomas on a regular basis and using the church support envelopes or the electronic method of con-tributing regularly to the church. We appreciate the sup-port of our school families. The request for subsidy form should be turned in to the parish office for completion.
