Parish Mission Statement
George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street
Ithaca NY 14850 607273-6121
Why do we sing Singing unites us with the Word of God It has been said that ldquoWhen we sing we pray twicerdquo Singing allows us to connect with God and reinforces our Liturgy Singing brings us together in both praise and worship We have been told to sing In Colossians 316 we are instructed to ldquo Let the word of Christ[a] dwell in you richly teach and admonish one another in all wisdom and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms hymns
and spiritual songs to Godrdquo It also allows us to become ldquoOnerdquo in the Liturgy and gives us the opportunity to par-ticipate in the Mass and the Word of God Singing also uplifts our spirit and brings joy in our hearts James 513 asks us ldquoIs anyone cheerful Let them sing praiserdquo If you study Scripture on this point yoursquoll notice that some-times singing gives birth to joy and sometimes joy gives birth to singing But persistently in Scripture joy and singing are bound together You canrsquot study one of these two biblical themes without encountering the other In all the years I have been involved in music I have never seen anyone sing that was sad Singing brings joy to our
hearts What better way is there then to sing praise to our Lord united in song with joy and happiness in all we have been given Even Jesus and his Disciples sang at the ldquoLast Supperrdquo Matthew 26 30 tells us ldquoThen after singing songs of praise they walked out to the Mount of Olivesrdquo Over 1150 verses in the Bible reference music and the Book of Psalms is the songbook Enter the Cantor Just as the Lectors announce the ldquoWord of Godrdquo from the Old Testament it is the job of the Cantor to announce the ldquoWord of Godrdquo from the Psalms Since the Psalms are the ldquoSongbookrdquo they are sung The role of the Cantor
comes from an old Jewish tradition and isrdquo a synagogue official who sings or chants liturgical music and leads the congregation in prayerrdquo Therefore when we sing the Psalm we are praying Then why do we have a choir There are initially 4 reasons we have a church choir First and foremost it combines the efforts of the Cantor to ldquoLead the Congregation in songrdquo and adds ldquoa depth to the musicrdquo The blending of the choral parts brings harmony and an increased awareness of the power of song within the Liturgy and enlivens the congregationrsquos song Chronicles 1516 ldquoDavid also commanded the chiefs of the
Levites to appoint their brothers as the singers who should play loudly on musical instruments on harps and lyres and cymbals to raise sounds of joyrdquo Therersquos that word ldquoJoyrdquo againhellip We sing the Hymns that are chosen to reinforce the ldquoWord of Godrdquo that is presented that day But additionally to challenge the choir and keep them engaged we sing an ldquoOctavordquo during gifts that is too difficult to do as a congregational piece The church allows us to do a choral piece either during the Presentation of Gifts or immediately following Communion The music should be inspirational and reflectional in nature and we try to find something that continues the ldquoTheme of the
dayrdquo Brian Henn serves on the Executive Board of The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada and points out that ldquoThe church choir sings beautiful and challenging music to praise God and edify the congrega-tionrdquo Finally the choir fosters Faith Formation Yes we pray during and after rehearsal support each other and help each other in times of need enriching our faith and forming a bond within our faith community However there is a problem Can you imagine a Sunday Mass without a Cantor or Choir and all the above things they bring to the table Thatrsquos where we are headedhellip Many members are getting older the stairs are ldquogetting steeperrdquo and some relocate or drop out for health reasons and no one is filling in the gaps Many times I canrsquot do the chosen
Octavo as I donrsquot have enough parts or Christopher doesnrsquot have enough instruments YOU can help If you sing with the radio or hum in the shower you can sing in a choir Yoursquore already at Mass Can you dedicate another 2 hours a week to rehearse and worship our Lord Please the choirs will begin again soon and we need singers to continue the role of music in our church

A Note from the Music Director In regards to what you hear during Mass It is im-portant to note that what you hear depends on where you are sitting and shat should be made clear Because of the delay in sound the Cantor sings when they hear the Organ which is later than someone sitting in the middle or back of the church The people in the back hear the Organ first those in the middle hear it second which is before the front and the Cantor hear it The Cantor responds and those in the front hear it first which corresponds to when they hear the Organ However those in the middle and the back hear the Cantor later Since they have already heard the Organ they assume that the Cantor is behind the organ (late) Due to the length and acoustics of the church there is nothing that can be done other than move the Cantor up into the loft If that were the case the Cantor and the Organ would be in sync and everyone would hear both the Organ and the Cantor at the same time This is not the case with the Cantor in front There-fore we need to recognize that a delay will fool our ears This also affects what is occurring when the Traditional Choir sings at the 1030 Mass The choir and the Organ are in sync but the Cantor hears us late and thinks they are singing with the Organ In their perspective they are but not to those in the back or middle of the church This is a quick synopsis so people understand why they
hear what they hear Gary Vrabel

Cayuga Ridge Communion Ministers Needed Perhaps you have noticed two extra Communion ministers enter the sanctuary at the 830am Mass on Sundays These ministers after receiving the Precious Body amp Blood of Christ are then sent forth to take the Real Presence of Jesus to the Catholic resi-dents at Cayuga Ridge a nursing and rehabilitation facility What a beautiful gift to take to others It takes a number of volunteers to fulfill this ministry and we are currently in need of more volunteers Please prayerfully consider joining this sacred ministry and if you are interested and available on Sun-day mornings please contact Erika Linsdell for further details 273-6121
