Staff News
Two of our Teaching Assistants will be leaving us at the end of term. Mrs Swetlana Greenhough is moving out of the area due to her husband’s posting and Mrs Tania Burton has decided she wants to train to become a teacher. Tania will start her training in September with our Pickwick Teaching School Alliance so we will be able to keep in touch with her. We would like to thank
both of them for all they have done to support our pupils and wish them luck with their new adventures ahead.
In September Mrs Jenny Metcalfe, Mrs Rachel Taylor and Mrs Nicola Tuplin will all be returning to
school following their maternity leaves. Rachel will be reducing her working week and will be returning to the teaching team on a part time basis. Nicola is also reducing her working week and will be returning to the teaching assistant team for three days a week. Jenny will continue to work three days a week in the Inclusion team. We look forward to welcoming them all back to the team.
Also in September we will be welcoming our new Early Years Teaching Assistant, Miss Charlie
Gammon, to the team to replace Mrs Simons. Miss Gammon has lots of experience working in a Nursery and we are looking forward to utilising her knowledge and expertise of the Early Years
curriculum.
From September Mrs Clare Vines will be increasing her teaching week to four days following her successful appointment as a Curriculum Development Group Leader. She currently works part time in a jobshare with Mrs Di Hawkins. They have worked together very successfully for many years and we know this will be an exciting change for both of them. From September Mrs Vines’ new jobshare partner will be Mrs Nicola Ryan who is returning to teach one day a week with her.
We know that both Clare and Nicola are looking forward to working together and will make a great team. Mrs Hawkins is now waiting to find out who her new jobshare partner will be!
The Brook Centre (our Resource Base at Pound Pill for speech and language impaired pupils) is continuing its phased closure. From September there will be three pupils on roll which means the funding has been reduced to reflect this. The school can no longer afford a part time teacher to
operate the centre so Mrs Suzette Perry, our Teaching Assistant Manager, will oversee the centre and liaise directly with class teachers. Mrs Sam Cottrell, the current teacher in the Resource
Base, will be returning to mainstream teaching.
Wedding bells will be ringing this summer as Mrs Joella Long, one of our Teaching Assistants, will be getting married to her fiancé David. We wish them both a most wonderful day full of joy and
celebration with their families and friends.

Miss Palmer’s Recommended Reads
Please look out for these books in our class libraries, Corsham Library, The Corsham Book Shop or online.
KS2
Llama United has gone from strength to strength after their first Cup win, gaining fame and fortune along the way. Sadly the England football team is not having the same success and, with the World Cup looming, their manager is desperate to find a magic ingredient to beat their bitter rivals.
Friends (and llama managers) Tim and Cairo have just that ingredient and agree to loan some of Llama United's top players. But not everything is plain sailing and, with Cairo strangely distracted by the rival team, and the llamas having trouble settling in, Tim has his work cut out for him. It seems not everybody wants to support the team with an impossible dream . . .
Llamas Go Large: A World Cup Story is the second hilarious Llama United book from Scott Allen, full of football funnies and laugh-a-minute llamas, illustrated by Sarah Horne.
KS1
For anyone who can't see a ball without wanting to kick it, head it, shoot it, or boot
it! A wonderful rhyming story to read aloud, Kicking A Ball will not disappoint fans of
Allan Ahlberg. Written as a poem, the little boy in the story has been brought to life perfectly by artist Sebastien Braun. Every parent will be able to immediately relate to the simple joy felt by a boy simply kicking a ball, and how there is nothing else quite like
it. The incomparable Allan Ahlberg takes us on a journey from childhood to fatherhood full of
humour, warmth, friendship . . . and football.
Non-Fiction Book
The greatest goals… The most spectacular
saves… Meet the top 40 footballers of all time! Relive Ronaldo’s most memorable moments, learn
about Messi’s legendary left foot, meet the youngest-ever World Cup goal scorer, Pelé, and see the some of the most spectacular saves in history. Every player is a winner in their own way, but who will you choose as your hero?
Jam-packed full of fun footie facts about who each legend played for, how many goals they scored and the special skills they had, this is the perfect read for football fans all over the world.
Our school is strongly committed to improving reading and knows the importance of reading for pleasure. There is good evidence to suggest that young people who read for pleasure daily perform better throughout their school lives and beyond.
We want to encourage children to enjoy reading and to read a wide range of good quality literature.
We are delighted to inform you that the school has recently made another investment in our library with the purchase of a new online computer system called ‘Reading Cloud’
and many new books for both KS1 and KS2. This has all been possible due to the generous support of the PTA,
When this system goes live, pupils, staff and parents will be able to view our school library
catalogue online and pupils will also be able to use it to write book reviews, blog about what they are reading and their favourite authors and search for new books.
The system also has fantastic feature called ‘Who Next?’ which recommends new books and
authors based on the books that your child has already read and enjoyed. You will be able to use this feature at home to help your child select their next book.
Children will be asked to scan any books they borrow from the school library and scan it again when they return it, just as you would the Corsham library. In this way we hope to
continue to maintain and grow the school libraries at both sites. We hope to get the Reading Cloud up and running from September at Pound Pill.
We will also have the Broadwood System ready but plan to launch it separately to fit in around the new build. Watch this space for more information in September.
Watch this space for more information in September.
Happy Reading. Miss Palmer
In order to ensure that we can continue to offer a wide range of quality fiction for your children to enjoy, please could we ask that
ALL books that have been borrowed this year are returned to school before the holidays so they can be added onto the Reading Cloud. We understand that books often hide on book shelves and at the bottom of bags but hopefully our school books should be easy to spot with their coloured sticker on the spine and the school stamp
inside.
Pound Challenge – Young Entrepreneur 2018
Year Six have absolutely amazed us all this year by raising more than £2,850 in the 2018 Pound Challenge as part of our citizenship curriculum.
The children were all given £1 and asked to put together a Business Plan outlining how they intended to invest their money in a project that would raise money for UNICEF. Corsham Primary is a UNICEF Right’s Respecting School and so it seemed sensible to choose this
charity to work with.
Their entrepreneurial ideas left the teachers, Mrs Cooke (Lady Cooke Sugar), Mrs Stevens (Karren) and Mr Hayden (Claude) almost speechless! Dog walking, cake/fudge/flapjack/
cookie making, lemonade making, bike repairs, making artwork, upcycling tins, selling squishies and putty, popcorn popping, car washing and holding a raffle to name just a few.
Lord Sugar himself would be astounded at their business acumen and entrepreneurial skills! We are all incredibly proud of our year six children for working so hard on this project and raising a huge amount of money that can be used by UNICEF to provide classrooms in
parts of the world where children are not so lucky to have such a lovely school as ours to attend.
Thanks go to all our year six pupils for all their enthusiasm and commitment towards this challenge. We all hope they have learnt lots of life skills that they can take forward into
adulthood.
New Build at Broadwood Update
We are excited to let you know that the extension of our Broadwood site is due to start on Monday 9 July and is programmed to take 59 weeks. This first stage shall develop the internal part of the current building between Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms and the hall. The
intention is to complete the renovation by 1 September to ensure learning can commence as normal at the beginning of term. This part of the school shall be closed off to all children and non-building
personnel during this time. Children will be able to access the main building through their class outside doors and back in through atrium outside doors. All learning and activities shall continue as
normal. During the Summer holiday works shall also be carried out on the school carpark in readiness for the children’s return in September.
This is the beginning of a very exciting time for us and we are really looking forward to welcoming
the construction team to our Broadwood site.
SPORTS NEWS
Teams from Broadwood and Pound Pill had a great time at a recent local cricket tournament. Each team managed to play
three matches before rain stopped play. In those matches we scored boundaries, took catches and bowled some wonderful
balls.
Tuck Reminder ….
Please remember that tuck can be brought in from home for children to enjoy at break times and this must only be fruit or plain biscuits. (No chocolate biscuits please.) Reception
children pay for their tuck directly to the class teacher (50p per week). Fruit is also provided by school to all children in Key Stage 1 at break times.
Important notes regarding parking Please may we again urge parents to be considerate if driving to drop off and pick up their child/ren. The school offices take frequent calls from residents asking that our parents do not park over their driveways, on private land and inconsiderately in the vicinity of both sites. Pound Pill
We really do appreciate that parking can be difficult in and around Corsham. If you regularly drive, please apply to the school office for a parking permit enabling you to use the Co-op car park in Newlands Road. Broadwood
Please park at the nearby community centre and walk across to school rather than using the narrow roads, parking on bends or on the grass. Thank you.
Over the next few weeks of term, Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 will be enjoying getting to know their new classrooms and
teachers. Each class will have the opportunity to have Story Times and Golden Times in their new year groups in addition to spending the whole morning with their new teacher. They will also have lots
of opportunities to ask questions about their new classes in preparation for September. Finally, we will all get together for our
annual Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 Picnic.
We are very much looking forward to this year’s annual School Council Talent Contest which will be on Monday 23 July 2018. Please get your entries in as
soon as possible to the school office.
The Talent Contest is one of the highlights of the school year and soon we will be discovering who at Corsham Primary has serious talent!
Indhu Rani Friday 25 May
It always amazes the staff how the children so
enthusiastically think and plan such fantastic activities for everyone to enjoy. From face painting to decorating
biscuits—the children had thought of it all and on top of that, they raised a staggering £1476.16 in just one hour!
All their hard earned cash will be sent to the Goodwill
Village in India. Well done children, you were brilliant and thank you Mums and Dads, friends and extended
family for all your support.

Transfer of pupil information to new schools
As we are nearing the end of term and our Year 6
children are preparing to join their chosen
secondary schools, we are spending lots of time
sharing information with the new settings in order
to help the children settle as quickly and easily as
possible. It is a requirement that school records
are transferred when a child moves to another
school, in any year group. This includes
information about their personality/character,
academic progress, if they have any SEN etc., and
also any information relating to safeguarding or
Child Protection. If you have any questions please
contact the school office.
Pickwick Learning Teaching School Alliance News
Pickwick Learning Teaching School Alliance was created by Corsham Primary School and four other founding schools 5 years ago, in order to offer school improvement support and professional development services to other schools, as well as to be able to train teachers
on the job through our School Direct PGCE teacher training programme. The Alliance now has over 55 member schools spread across 5 local authority areas. Wiltshire Local
Authority, Snapdragons nurseries, several businesses and charities, and three Universities are also partners.
We are really proud of all the work that Pickwick Learning does to support schools and
colleagues in the local area – it continues to go from strength to strength!
This year Pickwick Learning secured DfE funding to open up a Hub in Salisbury to enable us to offer teaching school services in South Wiltshire. This hub, expertly led by Rebecca Bone and Alan Geary, has recruited specialist teachers and headteachers in the area and
has provided exceptional leadership and teaching courses.
As part of the DfE’s Strategic School Improvement Fund Pickwick Learning are collaborating with Excalibur, Nexus and Swindon Teaching School Alliances to lead 2/5 of
the hubs leading work to improve phonics outcomes for 52 schools across the region.
Over the last four years Pickwick Learning have trained 20 high quality trainee teachers who all successfully passed through our programme and have all secured jobs – we are
looking forward to working with next year’s cohort of 10 trainees.
The Pickwick Learning team from September is:
Mr James Passmore and Mrs Amy Tapscott – Directors (job-share) Mr Alan Geary and Mrs Rebecca Bone—Deputy Directors (South Wiltshire) (job-share)

What is a Teaching School?
Teaching Schools are groups of Department for Education approved schools which work
collaboratively with others to provide high quality professional development, school
improvement work and Initial Teacher Training. They are part of the DfE’s goal to give
schools a central role in raising standards by developing a self-improving and sustainable
school-led system. Schools in Teaching School Alliances benefit from the highest quality
CPD, share best practice, are kept up to date with the latest education developments, take
part in peer reviews and evidence based research, have access to local, national and
international expertise and demonstrate that they are outward facing. Schools can both
benefit from and contribute to support provided by the Teaching School Alliance.
The children in Year 6 are busy putting the final touches to their end of year production, “I’m a
Believer”. We have it on good authority that the rehearsals are going well and we are all really looking forward to seeing the show. This year, the two sites are working together and the performance times for
parents and carers are:
Wednesday 11 July at 6pm Thursday 12 July at 6pm
This assembly (for children at both sites) will be held at 2.00pm at St. Bartholomew’s Church on
Thursday 19 July
