The Creativity Gap Only 1 in 4 people feel they are living up to their creative potential. More than half feel that creativity is being stifled by their education system.

The ART Studio and The Science Laboratory both involve:
• Learning by DOING! • Asking key questions and critical thinking • Process and experimentation • Utilizing data in new and interesting ways to affect positive
change • Cross disciplinary collaborations

Why Arts Integration?
The main objective of both art and science is discovery.
--from STEM to STEAM, Using Brain Compatible Strategies to Integrate the Arts, David Sousa and Tom Pelecki
The aim of Staging STEM is to
• Exercise the essential qualities of the scientific spirit.
• Make learning visible. • Bring vocabulary and concepts
kinesthetically alive. • Enliven the STEM classroom and
curriculum to address all learners.
CONVERGENT THINKING
= well-defined with definite correct answers = standardized tests
+ DIVERGENT THINKING
=open-ended questions with possible multiple solutions = complex thinking
= Engaged classrooms
Electricity | Exploring the intersection of STEM and ARTS
Warm-up: Clap Game with brakes| Ensemble and Collaboration | Insulator and Conductor Game – Smithsonian | Proton, Neutron, Electron (sound and movement)
Anthropologist game| 3rd grade
Electricity | Exploring the intersection of STEM and ARTS
• Game—Demo Tableau exercise
• Making light bulbs with open and closed circuits
• Learning assessment Game-- Bippity Bippity Bop • For Focus • For Content
Baby dinosaurs hatching | 3rd grade
“Many scientists, mathematicians and engineers use skills borrowed from the arts as scientific tools. These include the ability to do the following:
• Draw on curiosity • Observe accurately • Perceive an object in a different form • Construct meaning and express one’s observations accurately • Work effectively with others • Think spatially (How does an object appear when I rotate it in my head?) • Perceive kinesthetically (How does it move?)”

Turbines | 5th grade
“To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, require creative imagination and marks real advances in science.” --Albert Einstein
Butterfly lesson| Kinder
Part 1: Electrical Circuits (2 Lessons) ⓇSCI.5.6B Demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat, and sound. SCI.5.3A In all fields of science, analyze, evaluate, and critique scientific explanations by using empirical evidence, logical reasoning, and experimental and observational testing, including examining all sides of scientific evidence of those scientific explanations, so as to encourage critical thinking by the student. Part 2: Electrical Flow in Parallel and Series (2 Lessons) ⓇSCI.5.6B Demonstrate that the flow of electricity in circuits requires a complete path through which an electric current can pass and can produce light, heat, and sound. Part 3: Uses of Electrical Energy (1 Lesson) ⓇSCI.5.6A Explore the uses of energy, including mechanical, light, thermal, electrical, and sound energy.
