Starting the New Year with Healthier Eating HabitsBy Chelsea Bodenstab
I know changing your diet can be tricky, but setting small goals is always a good way of getting into a healthier eating regiment. Here at BPI we always encourage healthy eating habits. Our lunches follow
the items on the MyPlate diagram's recommended outline. Remembering to add variety and color into your diet along with staying hydrated can make your body feel much better overall. Below are some examples to start yourself on a healthier journey to eating better.
Know what a healthy plate looks like:Everyone grew up knowing the food pyramid, but the USDA recently presented a simpler way to see what you should eat each day called “MyPlate”. MyPlate shows exactly how the five food groups should proportioned on the plate.
You want to try to be sure you eat all different types of foods. Your plate should hold a variety of colors—bright, colorful foods are always the best choice! A healthy meal should always include, but not be limited to:
1. Lean protein (lean meats, seafood, eggs, beans)2. Fruits and vegetables (think orange, red, green,
and purple)3. Whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat pasta)4. Low-fat dairy (milk, yogurt)
Try to always choose foods that give you high in fiber and a low in sodium or salt content. When looking specifically at the vitamins we need, look for Vitamin D. It's an important one as we age.
Reading the Nutritional Facts label:The healthiest food choices are whole food options. Remember to read the label, for example not all wheat products are 100% wheat. Processed, and pre-packaged foods do not always offer the same amount of nutrients as their fresh counterparts. Reading the labels to find items that are lower in fats, added sugars, and sodium is the best option.Use recommended serving sizes:To maintain your weight, you must eat the right amount of food for your age and body. The American Heart Association is an excellent resource to find what is right for you or your loved one.
Staying hydrated:Dehydration is one of the most common ways those over 65 end up hospitalized. Water is an extremely important nutrient too! Don’t let yourself get dehydrated—drink small amounts of fluids consistently throughout the day.Making sure you are eating plenty of fruits and vegetables is one of the best ways to stay healthy. They can be fresh, frozen or canned. Choosing to eat more dark green vegetables such as spinach or broccoli, as well as orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes could be the right mix of vitamins to give you the boost of energy you need. Don’t forget to allow yourself to get your whole-grains every day. Whole Grains a very good for your digestive track and they help regulate your body. Also, vary your protein choices with more fish, beans and peas. They can provide as much protein as an equally unhealthy counterpart meal; but in the end you’ll thank yourself for eating healthy. And most importantly always stay hydrated! Look for more tips for healthy eating in this coming year.Let us do the healthy cooking for you. Join us at for a delicious home cooked lunch daily at BPI.
