Dr. May Cravath Wharton
May Hannah Cravath was born on August 18, 1873, in Winona County, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Hannah Elizabeth “Eliza” Williams (1839-1907) and Bishop Milton Cravath (1835-1900). Dr. May spent her early childhood on a farm in Minnesota before moving with her family to “pioneer a homestead and tree claim” in Dakota Territory (now South Dakota). She completed high school at Carleton Academy in Northfield, Minnesota, before attending Carleton College from 1890-1893. Dr. May completed her B.A. at the University of North Dakota where she was valedictorian of her graduating class. She taught briefly at the University of North Dakota before receiving her medical degree from the University of Michigan Homeopathic Medical School in 1903. Dr. May set up a medical practice in Atlanta, Georgia. It is there, at church, where she met her husband, Edwin R. Wharton (1864-1920). The two were married on August 7, 1906, in Fulton County, Georgia. The Whartons moved to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1907 to run a settlement house. Edwin served as director and Dr. May worked as a physician. The Whartons moved to a New Hampshire farm in 1909. Dr. May had a private practice in New Hampshire and Edwin served in small churches in the area. In 1917, the Whartons moved to Pleasant Hill, Tennessee. Edwin took a position as principal of Pleasant Hill Academy. Dr. May served the academy’s staff and students as a physician and she also taught Health classes. When
5
the global flu epidemic came to Pleasant Hill in 1918-1919, Dr. May started serving local families outside of the school. Many times she traveled rough terrain on foot, horseback, muleback, or (in rare occasions when there was a good enough trail) buggy. Dr. May developed a reputation among the mountain families as a caring and determined doctor. On November 19, 1920, Dr. May’s husband died and she began to make plans to return to New Hampshire. Clinton Anderson, along with other community members, brought Dr. May a petition signed by 50 families asking her to stay and be their doctor. She made the decision to stay in Pleasant Hill. On August 7, 1921, Dr. May and Elizabeth Fletcher (an Art teacher at Pleasant Hill Academy) opened Sanex, a two-bed hospital. In November of that same year, Alice Adshead joined Dr. May and Ms. Fletcher in their endeavors. Ms. Adshead was a British born and Canadian trained registered nurse who Dr. May met at a North Carolina sanatorium. Dr. May had gone to the Carolina hospital for advanced study in the treatment of tuberculosis. In 1922, the three women chartered Uplands Cumberland Mountain Sanatorium and on November 20th they opened an eight-bed hospital. By 1935, the endeavor had grown to a twenty-bed hospital with an operating room, surgical ward, and maternity room. On May 17, 1937, Van Dyck House for the treatment of Tuberculosis was opened. In March 1950, Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville opened with a fifty-bed capacity. Dr. May’s last project was the opening of the nursing home that bears her name in 1957. Dr. May died on November 19, 1959. She is buried in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.

DETAILED COLLECTION DESCRIPTION
SERIES I. -- ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS Series Scope and Content: Composed of biographical sketches, meeting minutes, by-laws, charter materials, correspondence, funeral programs, guest registers, floor plans, land records, maps, a medical ledger, newspaper clippings, obituaries, poetry and prose, press releases, reports, resolutions, ribbons, sheet music, and speeches. Materials in this series span the period 1869-2005. In addition to individuals found on the container list as having included biographical sketches, there is biographical information on the following people in the biographical notes folder (Box 1, f. 8): L. Burrell Harris, Carl J. Lipner, Elisabeth Mitchell, Margaret Tucker, [Elisabeth] Martini, Dr. Vivian A. Tenney, Dr. and Mrs. Lee Gable, Eleanor Haynes, Grace Heller, Mrs. Jack Kappelman, Edna Moorhouse, Mary Brice Roberts, Susan Stifler, Carol Taylor, Dr. Paul V. Taylor, Dr. and Mrs. Glenway Nethercut, Naomi Blalock, Ruby Ball, Mr. and Mrs. R. B. Berrie, Phoebe Cordell, and Leola Boyce. Notable items include a ledger book containing the minutes of the first Board of Directors meeting as well as information regarding the petition for a state charter and constitution and by-laws (Box 1, f. 41; see also Box 16, f. 10), a copy of the Spring 1960 edition of Mountain Life & Work magazine (Box 8, f. 3) that details the death of Dr. May Wharton, floor plans for Cumberland General Hospital (oversize folder 113), and a “List of Babies and Parents of Babies Delivered by Uplands Doctors 1918-1940” (Box 10, f. 12) that was probably compiled for Heritage Day and then updated for Uplands’s 50th Anniversary. The “Annual Report of Administrator” included in the Board of Directors meeting minutes (Box 3, f. 4), dated July 19, 1957, is especially interesting as it notes the totals of various reasons for admission to the hospital:
The totals, showing increase in abortions and still born infants are not pleasing, and perhaps provide a source for study by the Staff. These of course were due to conditions in the home life and activity of the mothers, over which we have no control.
It should be noted that the use of the term “abortions” here probably refers to spontaneous (miscarriage) rather than surgical abortions. Another item of particular significance is the “April Report of Administrator” included in the Board of Directors meeting minutes (Box 3, f. 5) dated May 23, 1958, that details the attempted suicide of one of their recent L.P.N. nursing graduates after her involvement with a married man: On Thursday evening, May 15, we held the graduation of the L.P.N. class, which
climaxed their 13 month period of training. We were gratified to have a goodly number of the Board members present. There has been an unfortunate incident involving one of the class members, which has had considerable publicity, and much pressure has been brought upon Mrs. Kelley and me, to get us to reverse our position on the matter.
13
One of the girls, a divorcee, has been badly upset for several months, due to her marital affairs, and has unfortunately accepted the attentions of a married man, evidently placing a serious interpretation of his intentions, thru their friendship. She recently took an overdose of some material which, had she not been found promptly, would have resulted fatally. The girl was hospitalized at Monterey, and after returning home was called in for interview, following very minor surgery. She told Mrs. Kelley and me the following damaging statements: 1. She does not know WHAT she took. 2. She does not know HOW MUCH she took. 3. She does not know whether it was accidental or deliberate, but had she stopped to think, she would not have done it. When they returned from Monterey, her mother destroyed immediately all material in the house which could have thrown light on the matter.
The “Laboratory and Inoculation Mother and Baby Clinics & Birth Control Visits” ledger book (Box 10, f. 18) is arguably the most noteworthy item in the collection. It is dated 1938-1941 and lists the total number of tests (i.e. urine, blood, throat smear, etc.), inoculations, or birth control visits in each location (i.e. Pleasant Hill, Ravenscroft, Todd Town, Willbanks, DeRossett, Whittenberg, Browntown, Big Lick, Pilot Knob, etc.) and mileage. Most of the birth control visits listed in the book were to fit women for diaphragms. However, Dr. May also seemed to be keeping notes on the effectiveness of a spermicidal “jelly” as her notes from June 30, 1938, indicate: “5 Old cases seen all took new jelly (blue) 3 used jelly every time - two irregularly…1 Used jelly every time - may be pregnant.” Dr. May appeared to be ahead of her time in the advocation of birth control to her patients. In 1873, the Comstock Act was passed in the U.S. that made it a crime to distribute birth control devices as well as advertisements and information about birth control or abortion, particularly through the U.S. mail. This law as well as similar (in most cases more restrictive) state laws would criminalize and limit the distribution of birth control for many years to come. On November 30, 1936, a U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals judge “rendered a decision that the federal obscenity laws do not apply to the legitimate activities of physicians, and that they may prescribe contraceptives in the interests of the health and general well-being of their patients.” The American Medical Association made contraception instruction part of their curriculum for medical schools in 1937. The following year, Dr. May started recording birth control visits in her medical ledger. The newspaper clippings (Boxes 11-15) give a good overall picture of Uplands’s development while highlighting key achievements of Dr. May as well as other associated individuals. There are a couple of news articles that should be mentioned. The first is “My Day” by Eleanor Roosevelt (Box 11, f. 2) which ran in the June 1, 1940, edition of the New York World-Telegram. Mrs. Roosevelt discusses Uplands’s importance to the region and how it serves the community:
The work done in this area is for people who are descendants of fine old American stock but who suffer because of the isolation of their surroundings and from ignorance, sickness, and poverty.
14
The other item worth mentioning is the folder that contains clippings related to Fisk University (Box 13, f. 3). Dr. May’s uncle, Rev. Erastus M. Cravath, was the first president of Fisk. His image is highlighted in an article by Robert Churchwell in the January 7, 1966, edition of The Nashville Banner. Several materials in this series relate to Margaret B. Campbell, longtime art teacher for Pleasant Hill Academy. There is a biographical sketch (Box 1, f. 13), a photocopy of a note from Campbell refusing a speaking engagement (Box 8, f. 6), and a program from Campbell’s funeral (Box 8, f. 24). Several items in this series contain materials that directly relate to items in the Photographs or Audio/Visual Materials series. A letter dated August 17, 1959, (Box 7, f. 17) from Dr. Robert N. Hoyt relates to negatives of Wharton Nursing Home made by Dr. Hoyt (Box 90, f. 9). A holiday card from Etsuko Satoh (Box 8, f. 6) corresponds to photographs (Box 61, f. 13) in the collection. A letter from Pauline Jenkins (Box 8, f. 5) dated June 6, 2005, relates to pictures made at the Sparta Senior Citizens Center (Box 63, f. 25). A circular from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department (Box 8, f. 6) detailing the chemicals and equipment used to make methamphetamine has an accompanying 3.5” computer disk (Box 108, item 10). The thank you letters (Box 8, f. 15) for CARE (Cooperative for American Remittances to Everywhere, Inc.) have associated photographs (Box 44, f. 32). A pamphlet titled “Japan in Color Series, Japanese Foods” (Box 10, f. 3) corresponds to slides of Japanese cuisine (Box 104, f. 5) donated by Helen Mitchell. And, the slide script (Box 17, f. 2) goes along with the Uplands slide sets (Boxes 106-107) in the Photographs series. Series Arrangement: This series is arranged alphabetically.

SERIES II. -- FINANCIAL RECORDS Series Scope and Content: Composed of accounts, audit materials, bank statements, budgets, check stubs, correspondence, donation records, fund-raising materials, a farm inventory, receipts, and reports. Materials span the period 1927-1997 and detail the fiscal workings of Uplands. Typically, some objects of this type (like check stubs) would not be kept but they provide insight into the creation and development of Uplands as well as professional memberships Dr. May maintained. One item of note is a receipt, dated January 1, 1931, for Dr. May’s dues to the American Institute of Homeopathy (Box 22, f. 12). A later 1931 receipt for dues (Box 22, f. 14) indicates that Dr. May was also a member of the Women’s Homeopathic Medical Fraternity. Homeopathy is based on the theories that “like cures like” and the “law of minimum dose.” Basically, practitioners believe that a disease can be cured or have its effects lessened by taking a compound that might cause the affliction in healthy people and the effectiveness of the medicine is greater in small doses. Another interesting item is a 1931 receipt from Estes Surgical Supply Company (Box 22, f. 13) which lists things like Chloroform, Glycerine, Iodine, Aromatic Ammonia, Tracy’s gas eliminating tablets, and Listerine. Researchers interested in symbology should see the receipt from the Southeastern Express Company (Box 22, f. 15) includes a swastika as part of their logo. The logo depicts a swastika with the letters S, E, C, and O (to represent Southeastern Express Company) in each “arm.” The receipt is from the early 1930s before the swastika began to be seen as a symbol of hate because of its use by the Nazi party. The meaning of the Sanskrit word for swastika is “good fortune” or “well-being.” Prior to World War II, Native Americans (among other people groups) used the symbol to represent good luck or “good fortune.” They often included it in their artwork, particularly on baskets, blankets, and beadwork items. At the beginning of World War II, several Native American tribes (including the Navajo, Apache, and Hopi) published a decree stating that they would no longer use the swastika in their artwork.
Because the above ornament which has been a symbol of friendship among our forefathers for many centuries has been desecrated recently by another nation of peoples. Therefore it is resolved that henceforth from this date on and forever more our tribes renounce the use of the emblem commonly known today as the swastika or fylfot on our blankets, baskets, art objects, sandpaintings, and clothing.
Today, the symbol is still considered sacred in Eastern religions (such as Hinduism and Buddhism) although most of the Western world now associates it with hate and racism. Series Arrangement: This series is arranged alphabetically.

SERIES III. -- PERSONAL PAPERS Series Scope and Content: Composed of materials personally related to or kept by Alice Adshead, Elizabeth Fletcher, and Dr. May Cravath Wharton. Materials span the period 1886-2003. There are several significant items including Alice Adshead’s Registered Nurse Certificate (Box 24, f. 2). It was issued by the Minister of Health for the Province of Ontario and is dated December 4, 1924. A note from a mother to Alice Adshead (Box 24, f. 3), requesting help for a sick baby, is particularly poignant:
Miss Adsed My baby is been sick all his life Dr May is treaten him an it is getin cold an bad till I cant wash an dry his close an keep him clean an I wanto ask you ef you could send me some dides an he needs a gown an he needs some dresses an a blanket er something I could make him some close of an he needs stockins to ef you can help him I will be so hankful I hant stout myself
[Please be aware that the note is transcribed verbatim without spelling or grammatical corrections.] It should be mentioned that the diploma (Box 24, f. 14) in Elizabeth Fletcher’s materials belonged to her sister, Katherine (Katharinam Ogden Fletcher). The Bachelor of Arts degree is written in Latin and is from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is dated June 19, 1900. A watercolor book (Box 24, f. 15), titled “Over The Trail” and dated June-July 1902, includes watercolor sketches of Zuni, New Mexico; the Quiniault River (in Washington State); and Granville, Washington. The book was made by Elizabeth Fletcher as a gift for Henry and Laetitia Conrad. The original hand-written notebooks (Box 25, f. 12-17) comprising the manuscript for Dr. May’s autobiographical work, Doctor Woman of the Cumberlands, are included in her personal papers. There are six notebooks in all. Each book relates to a section of the later published work. Book I begins with “My life as I remember it.” The 1953 Certificate of Registration for Copyright (Box 25, f. 8) of the published work is also included. A photocopy of “Dr. Wharton’s Around the World Travels Diary” (Box 26, f. 9), dated circa 1930, is included. The original is said to be held in the Uplands’s Office. Dr. May discusses her trip around the world, including sailing on S.S. Belgenland of the Red Star Line. Belgenland was built in 1914 and served as a troopship during World War I before being outfitted as a luxury liner that offered world cruises. It was advertised as “The Largest Ship to Circle the Globe.” The diary starts on December 31st, [1929], with Dr. May’s observations of New Year’s Eve activities: Dear’s/ Can you hear the racket on the street - The old year is surely going out with a
bang here - everybody and his grandmother is on the street making some kind of a noise on some kind of an instrument, and we have been out in it elbowing our way through. If this is a sample of our days - there isn’t such a thing as time. Its just one round of something.
Dr. May talks about attending the “rose Carnival at Pasedena” on New Year’s Day.
28
The original handwritten 1907 diary (Box 26, f. 10) of Dr. May’s mother, Hannah Cravath, is also included. Mrs. Cravath recorded observations about her day and often closed each day’s account with a verse of scripture from the Bible. Series Arrangement: This series is arranged alphabetically.

SERIES VII. -- PHOTOGRAPHS Series Scope and Content: Consists of photographs, slides, and negatives documenting the history and development of Uplands as well as residents and staff. Materials contain images of events, people, programs, crafts, and other activities supported by Uplands and span the period 1881-2005. Notable events include a pancake relay race (Box 56, f. 34) and progressive dinner (Box 58, f. 12). For the pancake relay race of February 2000, winners included Jim and Dorothea Bowling, Doris Finkel, and Esther Erb. A progressive dinner is a traveling dinner party that is held at several locations (usually homes) in succession with a single course served at each location. Prominent individuals include Dr. May Cravath Wharton, Alice Adshead, Elizabeth Fletcher, Dora Read Goodale, and Yasumasa Suzuki (Box 67, f. 13). Suzuki is a famous Japanese artist born in Otsu-shi, Shiga Prefecture, in 1944. He received several awards from the Shinseisaku Association and Soga Exhibitions and has exhibited at the Royal Museum in Tokyo. Images of Tennessee political figures such as Congressman Lincoln Davis (Box 37, f. 2 and Box 50, f.4) and State Representative Charles Curtiss (Box 37, f. 2) are also included. Photographs related to the Pleasant Hill Community Church and the United Church of Christ volunteers’ trip to Pleasant Ridge, North Carolina, may be found in the scrapbooks (Box 62, f. 12) as well as with the volunteer materials (Box 72, f. 1). Note that the Uplands Sanatorium negatives (Box 88, f. 8) also include an image of Pleasant Hill Community Church. Perhaps some of the most fascinating photographs are from Dr. May’s world travels. There is an intriguing photo of a dog riding a horse (Box 73, f. 4) as well as many famous European tourist attractions (Box 73, f. 16) like Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace, Shakespeare’s Cottage, Stonehenge, and Old Sarum. The “History of Uplands” negatives (Box 82, f. 27) include copy images of Dr. May, Alice Adshead, and Elizabeth Fletcher as well as many early photographs of Uplands. There are also several old images of Uplands with the “Uplands Retirement Center” negatives (Box 86, f. 30). Series Arrangement: This series is arranged alphabetically by format.
