By Phyllis Kidwell“When the Son of God was born . . . He didn’t come in a show of great power, but as a helpless baby. He didn’t come as an elite, but as the son of a teenage mother. He wasn’t found by the religious leaders, but by the poor outcasts and Gentiles. He wasn’t born into luxury, but slept in an animal’s feeding trough.

“So when we celebrate his birth . . . Maybe we need to turn things up-side down like God turned things upside down when God moved into the neighborhood and broke all the rules: bringing good news for the poor, giving sight to the blind, and setting captives and the oppressed free.”

These thoughts begin our Advent study for this year, with a focus on simplicity. In a season that seems to become more hectic with each event added to our busy calendars, perhaps this is the year to step back and look again at the season. To look again at how we celebrate the birth of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

In our Advent study materials, we’ll ponder two questions: 1) How do we simplify the preparation for and celebration of Christmas? And, very much related, 2) How do we keep fo-cused on Christ throughout the sea-son? These questions will be posed over the season of Advent through weekly devotionals, which will be available as paper handouts around

the FPC campus and as a download-able PDF in our weekly e-newsletter (not on the list? Find the sign-up link on the website: www.fpctyler.com).

Now, the answers to these two ques-tions—how do we simplify, and how do we keep our focus on Christ—don’t have simple answers. But we’d like to engage each of you in the conversation as we move toward a simpler approach to Christmas. The church staff will share thoughts and start conversations on the blog where you’re invited to comment (www.fpctyler.com/news), and in addition, there will be a big paper Christmas tree that you’re invited to decorate with your ideas for a sim-ple Christmas. When you enter the main building through the breeze-way from the Fellowship Hall, you’ll see the large paper Christmas tree with ornament-shaped notes and markers available for you to contrib-ute your thoughts so that others can contemplate them as well.

As Advent begins, join us for the sec-ond annual Advent Artfest during the Sunday school hour on Novem-ber 30. Share fellowship, sing carols, and make Advent crafts as we all get in the spirit of the season together.

In addition to the musical offerings and special worship services this season, the church has planned some family-friendly events as well. During the Christmas Spectacular concert, Children’s Ministry will host

a special Christmas evening for chil-dren age 12 and under. And in addi-tion to the regularly scheduled First Friday Fun, Santa’s WorkSHOP will give kids a chance to contemplate the meaning of Christmas while their parents are free to tackle their to-do list. The annual Christmas pageant, A Child Is Born, will be performed during the 11 o’clock worship ser-vice on Sunday, December 14. Stay afterward for a tasty church-wide Christmas luncheon! For details about these events and more, see pages 3–5 of this issue.

With this focus on simplicity, per-haps we can all recapture the joy of Christmas that seems to come so easily to children as they anticipate a Merry Christmas!

Notes from SessionMinutes recorded by Robyn FilesThe Session met on October 21 and conducted the fol-lowing business: the consent agenda was approved, including the reception into active membership of Karl Rapp and Rachel and Brian Head.

As moderator of the Session, Stuart Baskin reported that a town hall meeting had been scheduled for Sunday, No-vember 9, to discuss the actions of the PCUSA’s General Assembly in June of this year. He also reported that High-land Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas will be formally dismissed by Grace Presbytery following a $7.8 million settlement and that the church will keep its name.

On behalf of the Governance Committee, Jennifer Ainsworth led a discussion on the church’s philosophy of governance to aid the committee’s work in drafting

a statement. Sally Smith Garmon reported on the Mis-sion Committee’s recent trip to Haiti and the progress of FPC’s Solar Under the Sun partnership there. Robyn Files presented the annual report of the Governance Commit-tee on behalf of the Planning and Evaluation Committee.

In new business, Arnold Oates reported on the financial needs of Camp Gilmont, urging the church to continue to include Gilmont in the mission budget. Chris Bunt dis-cussed the need for a speedy appointment to the federal judgeship which will soon be left vacant by the retire-ment of Leonard Davis. The Session passed a motion to draft a letter urging President Obama and Senators Cruz and Cornyn to act quickly. Robyn Files reported on the recent meeting of Grace Presbytery, and Skip Womack was elected to represent FPC at the presbytery meeting in Richardson at the end of November.

Pancakes with a Side of Mission4th Annual Bill Wagoner Memorial Pancake Breakfast Sunday, December 7, at 9:30 am // Fellowship HallAll are invited to play hooky from Sunday school class (with the blessing of your teachers, of course!) and at-tend a morning of pancakes and mission. You’ll also have a chance to purchase the Legacy Christ-mas CD, “Nativity Carols and Hymns,” with proceeds go-ing to support Presbyterian Women and Living Waters for the World. As is written in Mark 16:15, God has called us to “go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.”

A Christmas SpectacularPresented by Fine Arts @ FPC Saturday, December 13, at 6 pm // Sanctuary$5 adults / students & children freeCelebrate the magic of Christmas at the second annual Christmas Spectacular, with Santa, Frosty, Rudolph, and other special guests in attendance, including Taylor Hem-ness, KLTV news anchor. This festive concert will include all of your holiday favorites (plus a sing-along!), and the Voices of Faith Youth Choir will make a guest appearance. There will be Christmas cookies for everyone and a spe-cial program for young children during the concert (more info on page 5). A limited number of complimentary tick-ets are available to FPC members. Ask the church office.

Christmas Pageant and LuncheonSunday, December 14, at 11 am // SanctuaryJoin us during the 11 a.m. worship service when the chil-dren will present A Child is Born, a telling of the beau-tiful story of the birth of Jesus Christ. The children will dress up as the animals in the manger scene and as the characters that tell this story, singing familiar hymns and sharing the love of Jesus Christ. As a part of worship that morning, we will all share in song and celebration.

Afterward, join the church family for a catered fellow-ship luncheon. At the end of the meal, the children will decorate cookies and share in a special story time with Pastor Stuart. RSVP by December 10 (www.fpctyler.com/events/pageant or 903-597-6317). Adults $12 / Children 12 & under $6 / Children 2 & under free. Pay at the door.

Festival of Nine Lessons & CarolsPresented by Fine Arts @ FPC Sunday, December 21, at 6 pm // Sanctuaryfree admissionThis annual festival celebrates its ninth season as a Christmas tradition at First Presbyterian Church. The choir prepares carols drawn from the sacred Christmas repertoire, which are interspersed with scripture read-ings of the Christmas story by choristers, board mem-bers, and local dignitaries. This candlelit service draws inspiration from the internationally known Christmas Eve service at King’s College in Cambridge, whose roots can be traced back to the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1880. Sung by members of the Tyler Civic Chorale, this ecumenical service is open to all of our community as we prepare to celebrate the Christmas holiday.

The excitement grows when we involve the little ones in the telling of the most beautiful story of the birth of Jesus Christ. We’ll sing our most beloved Christmas carols and look at the manger scene through a child’s eyes. All are welcome.

44th Annual Moravian LovefeastWednesday, December 24, at 5:30 pm (musical prelude begins at 5:15 pm) // SanctuaryThis long-standing worship tradition of scripture and song is accompanied by a “feast”—authentic, home-made Moravian buns and hot cocoa served to each pew of worshipers. The lighting of hundreds of beeswax can-dles fills the sanctuary with quiet reverence, making for an unforgettable service. For information on volunteer-ing, see the back cover.
