The Diffusion of Online Distance Education
Distance Ed-ucation
There was a noted introduction of Online distance education in the early 1990’s. With the introduc-tion of Lotus Learning Manage-ment System and Lotus Virtual Classroom . In 1994, there was an Open University Virtual Summer School (Innovative Learning, 2011).
In the early 2000’s there was an in-crease in the adoption of the innova-tion with the introduction of addi-tional technologies like course man-agement systems like Moodle, Black-board and other offerings like the Manhattan Virtual Campus (Innova-tive Learning, 2011).
By 2006 to 2007, about 66% of US post secondary institutions offered distance ed-ucation courses. (National Center for Ed-ucational Statistics, n.d.). It continued with a slow but steady rise (Molenda, n.d) . Please note that this innovation has ma-tured to the late majority , where it is in its beginning stage of this category
