Glueing
17
CHOICE OF THE GLUE
The choice of the best glueing system is the first step that ensures a long-lasting application. When selecting the most suitable glue, the following factors have to be considered:
The cavity type / gap for glueing
The stone size / glued surface
The glueing properties and required surface treatment
The type of the base material
EXAMPLES OF GLUE PRODUCERS
Two-component epoxides Cyanoacrylate Modified silicone Dispersive
Plus 300 Endfest (UHU GmbH)
Cyberbond Apollo 2999 (Cyberbond)
E 6000 (Eclectic product)
DSI glue (DSI visions)
Araldite 2011 (Huntsman Corp.)
Pronto CA 50 gel (3M)
Konishi Ultrabond SU (Konishi Co., Ltd.)
RBC Adhesive 118 (RBC Ind. Inc.)
Loctite 454 gel (Loctite Corp.)
Cemedine Super XG (Cemedine Co., Ltd.)
UHU Sekundenkleber (UHU GmbH)
There are many producers of epoxy glues. The crucial quality of the glue is its curing time of ca. 12 hours at 20 C. The use of epoxy glues Rapid is not recommended. Never use a quick setting glue which could damage the stone foiling! The use of other unmentioned glues has to be discussed with the Preciosa components sales representative.

CARE OF TEXTILE MATERIALS WITH NO HOTFIX AND SEW-ON STONES
Textile products with No Hotfix Stones glued or sewed onto them are usually very sensitive to maintenance techniques and require careful handling.
It is therefore strongly recommended that if the need arises, they should only be washed by hand, using lukewarm water with aminimum amount of non-aggressive washing agents (detergents, washing agents designed for use with soft fabrics). Donot tumble dry or wring the washed products. Wrap them in atowel, gently squeeze the water out and then lay them out on an absorbent ground to dry (e.g. like woolen sweaters).
An alternative procedure can be selected only after apositive test result has been achieved with aproof sample.

Material without a flat area
Material under bending stress
Low pressure the glue does not adhere
Optimal pressure the glue adheres without spreading out
Pressure too high the glue spreads out
Hotfix basic principles
21
Application CuringThe glue should cure for 24 hours to get firm and durable. Do not handle or wash the textile material during this period.
CoolingIt takes about 5 minutes for the glue to cool down after the application. After this time, the stones are fixed to the base material.
CareTextile material with applied stones can be washed at 60 C, tumble-dried, dry-cleaned and carefully ironed.
5 min
24 hrs
SHAPE OF THE BASE MATERIALBase material without a flat area (rounded, dome-shaped surface) or under bending stress in the application area (e.g. shoes, zippers) is not suitable for applying big stones in particular.
PRESSUREThe application pressure depends on the chosen Hotfix stones, base material and technical equipment (machines etc.). Choosing an appropriate pressure when applying the Hotfix stones is another of the decisive factors for a high-quality bond between the stone and the base material. It is recommended to test the pressure on a material sample.
-
HOTFIX APPLICATION
Thanks to the unique adhesive, the Hotfix stones can be very gently applied onto most textile
materials. Our Hotfix stones are designed to ensure maximum smoothness and efficiency in
your production process, thus minimizing production costs. Our adhesive layer on the bottom
of the stones enables the use of all state of the art heat-setting devices based on simultaneous
application of heat and pressure as well as ultrasonic devices with application times from 0.3
sec. per one stone.

All application values specified in the table are guidelines only. The optimization of
these for the particular size of the stone, type of textile material and any setting
device requires testing on a sample piece of the carrier material used. Tests should
be always carried out from the start of production. Bond strength of Preciosa stones
on textiles reaches its desired quality in 24 hours from application, therefore it is not
recommended to carry out any testing and washing of applied stones before his time.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE A PROPERLY APPLIED STONE?
Acorrect combination of application parameters results in afirm bond between the stone and the underlying base material. In this case, atiny amount of glue is extruded around the stone circumference. The extruded glue does not interfere with the aesthetic aspects of the applied stone as it is not visible by eye, only under amagnifying glass. If thin or soft materials are used the stone is correctly applied when the glue soaks alittle through the base material and is visible on the reverse side.
If incorrect parameters are chosen (e.g. too high temperature and pressure or wrong application time) aconsiderable amount of the glue can melt and soak into the material getting thus away from the stone. The result is aweak bond between the stone and the base material.
If the application temperature or pressure are too low or the application time too short the glue is not sufficiently activated and problems with adhesion occur.
-

CAUSE RECOMMENDATION
1 The application temperature is too low. Increase the temperature by 10 C (20 F) at least.
2 The application time is too short. Prolong the application time. In case of a thick or multilayer material apply the heat from the front side through the stone.
3 The pressure is too low. It can occur by application on a thick material. Increase the pressure.
4 Uneven distribution of heat on the heated surface. Check the temperature with a measuring tape or a laser thermometer. If the difference is higher than ca 5 C (10 F) repair the heat press.
5 The heat press closes askew. Repair the heat press.
6 The application pad is not suitable. Test different application pads and choose the most suitable one.
7 The application temperature is too high. Lower the temperature by 20 C (40 F) at least.
8 The application time is too long. Shorten the application time.
9 The pressure is too high. Decrease the pressure of the heat press.
10 The application pad is too hard. Use a softer application pad.
PROBLEM CAUSE
The stone does not adhere to the base material. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
The glue spreads around the stone. 7, 8, 9, 10
The stone does not hold on seams or layered materials. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
