Guiding Principles
1
Merit
• Based on the combined results for all subjects.
• Determine students’ chances of being selected for a combination of their choice.
2
Subject Competence
• In order for students to manage the demands of certain subjects, a minimum level of competence is required, before they are eligible to offer the subject(s). Examples of these are Pure Sciences, Additional Mathematics, Pure Humanities, etc.
3
Availability of school resources
• Available school resources, coupled with students’ choices, determine the subject combinations offered.

HOW DOES YOUR CHILD
SELECT HIS/HER SEC 3 CLASS?
10
“Which subject combination should I take?”
“Which educational pathway should I choose?”
“Do I enjoy the languages, Sciences, Humanities or Mathematics?”
“Do I know my career aspiration yet?”
“What are the subjects required to get to my aspiration?”
“I don’t know what I want to be yet, but I know I love Literature. How now?”
“What do I really like about this subject?”
Questions Your Child May Have
11
Personal Characteristics
◦Personal Characteristics
◦ How does the subject combination play up to
your child’s strengths, interests, learning styles and
passion?
◦ How does the subject combination further your
child’s interests and learning styles?
◦ How will these subjects help your child achieve
his/her career aspirations?
12
“What are the subjects your child enjoys or is good at?”
13
• If your child enjoys a subject, he/she is likely to do well in it because being interested in something engages and motivates your child.
• It is a good enough reason to study a subject your child simply enjoys; it is in fact all the more critical if your child does not have a career prospect in mind yet.
