STREAMLIGHT SUPER SIEGE – more tricks than Houdini!
By: Sal Palma
Americans love the outdoors and with the
summer camping season rapidly approaching I
thought I’d tell you about one of the best
camping resources your money can buy.
What usually happens when one starts planning
for a camping trip, and this is true even with the
“off the grid” crowd, you start anticipating and
pack kit accordingly; this usually translates to
loading up everything including the kitchen sink
– WAY TOO MUCH GEAR. Now you’re faced
with having to squeeze an ATV (in the future it’ll
be a GPS equipped robotic pack animal) out of
the family budget so you can load up all that
crap. After it’s all said and done, you’ve
defeated the joy of camping which for me is
experiencing the full spectrum of nature in all of
its splendor and beauty. Nothing conveys
insignificance like waking to the rush of a
waterfall in miles upon miles of coniferous
forest. My solution to over packing is to use kit
that serves one or more functions, reducing as
much as possible what I take on a camping trip
without compromising safety and comfort.
Streamlight’s Super Siege scene light meets that
objective exceptionally well.
The Super Siege offers two illumination modes,
white light and red light to preserve night
vision. The two modes are selected via the
on/off button. A long press will switch between
modes. Once in the desired mode, short presses
of the on/off button will toggle between low,
medium and high for white light and low,
medium and S.O.S. in red. I found it curious that
Streamlight restricted S.O.S. signaling to red
light. It would have been equally useful to have
similar capability in white light mode.
The lantern is rechargeable from any a.c. outlet.
The Super Siege combines illumination with a
comprehensive power solution for all of your
outdoors needs.
The lantern’s battery is a power reservoir that
can be used to charge your smart device via its
USB port. The rechargeable 8800 mAh Lithium
Ion battery powers the lantern and serves as a
storage battery that can be used to charge a
variety of Streamlight rechargeable handheld
lights, for example:
8+ full charges: Streamlight Stylus Pro®
USB, Clipmate® USB, Double Clutch™
USB
4 full charges: Streamlight ProTac HL®
USB

Streamlight had their thinking cap on and fully
operational when they designed this lantern
because it can be set up in a variety of ways to
address any conceivable use.
In both white light and red light mode, you can
use the light as a directional illumination tool by
using the included shade; removing the shade,
converts the Siege into an omnidirectional
source of light.
In white light mode, you have a choice of three
output settings: low, 125 lumens and a run time
of 35 hours; medium 550 lumens and a run time
of 10.5 hours and high 1100 lumens and a run
time of 5 hours. At 1100 lumens, this lantern is
sufficiently bright to light up a very wide swath
of ground.
In red light mode, you have a choice of three
output settings; low, 1 lumen and a run time of
288 hours – this is ideal for map reading at
night; high, 2.7 lumens and a run time of 110
hours. The third red setting is a 2.7 lumen
flashing S.O.S. that runs continuously for 230
hours.
The Super Siege can be mounted or carried in a
variety of ways. Streamlight provided a hefty
handle at the top of the lantern.
But, they also included snap shackles at the top
and bottom so that the lantern can be oriented
in all possible planes. Tremendous versatility
that comes into play when setting up your tent
and illuminating the interior without having the
lantern sitting of the deck. Unlike the Coleman
lanterns, you won’t need to worry about a fire

hazard yet have an amazing amount of light at
your disposal.
If that’s not enough versatility for you, you can
remove the reflector to expose the L.E.D. array
which will then function for you as a task light.
Using the snap shackle on the bottom cap you
can invert the lantern to create a very homey
feel in your tent or cabin.
Last but not least, the bottom cap is removable
to expose a small storage compartment for your
keys, a little emergency cash, a USB cable or
anything else you’ll want to keep safe and
accessible.
Streamlight’s Super Siege is not a racy lighting
accessory, God knows there’s enough fluff on
the market. It is however eminently qualified
and fit for duty in a number of applications.
Keep one in your car trunk for any emergency,
to use in your cabin or vacation home or keep
one as an emergency light in the event of
natural or manmade disasters.
The Streamlight Super Siege will be the best
$103 to $120 you’ve ever spent. And by the
way, think of all the crap you can displace from
your camping kit with this lantern, check it out!
