Sustainable Development – International Framework –Overview and Analysis in the Context of Forestsand Forest Products – Ecosystem services andcompetitiveness in the Bio-economy

Ecosystem Serviceswith resources in theGreen Economyand Bio-economy:Ecosystem Services Approach broadens thesustainability perspective within the forest sector.Economic and ecological aspects are linkedtogether. Ecosystem concept allows a wide framefor sustainable forests and forest products both inprivate and public forests. In Finland, the NonIndustrial Private Forest (NIPF) sector and forestowners’ role is significant. Natural resourcemanagement and strategic choices have relevance.Investments in forests and forest products providea multifunctional development for the forestsector. In the Green Economy multiple ecosystemsare taken into consideration. Different ecosystemsform a promising opportunity. Ecosystems forman opportunity for value generation.

Certification of forests and forest products and useof forests in construction and buildings aresignificant as developing ecosystem markets.

Vision of the Finnish National Forest Strategy isthat sustainable forest management is a source ofenhancing welfare.

Forest-based business and activities provide a keyin the Finnish Bio-economy towards sustainableeconomic growth in Finland.

Forests and forest products have multiple roles indeveloping forest ecosystem services sustainablytaking into consideration the climate changemitigation framework.

Strategic objective of The National ForestStrategy is that Finland is a competitive operatingenvironment for forest-based business.

Research Questions:• How is stakeholder collaborationrepresented in an international and nationalpolicy framework and what is the role ofcorporations in the corporate socialresponsibility approach?• How do stakeholders represent GreenEconomy with Bio-economy and GreenGrowth and the CSR in ecosystemservices?• Whether to the Advocacy Coalition Frameworkapproach with an international and nationalpolicy aspect, how can the sustainabledevelopment and competitiveness beenhanced with Green Growth, GreenEconomy and Bio-economy?

Forests can provide opportunities withcompetitiveness:• A sustainable resource for multiple ecosystem

services• Opportunities in sustainable forest

management and Forest Certification

Forest productscan provide opportunities withcompetitiveness:• New technology, quality, markets• In technological development and innovations• Green building and wood construction

Stakeholder collaboration:In the Bio-Economy, stakeholders have animportant role providing active, sustainable anddiverse use of forests. Stakeholders have animportant role in the competitiveness.Corporations have importance in the CorporateSocial Responsibility, CSR, and competitiveness.

Conclusions:Stakeholders have an important role in the greenapproaches. Stakeholders have a significant role inthe markets. Ecosystem services supply resourcesto markets and can enhance local development.

In Finland, private forest owners play a key role incompetitiveness sustaining forest ecosystemservices and providing wood for the industry.Forest owners’ role is important in providingresources for the ecosystem services in themarkets in Finland. Forest owners’ role isimportant for the sustainability and for thecompetitiveness.

Sustainable development can be revealed in thegreen concepts and in the stakeholdercollaboration.

Corporations have a significant role in theCorporate Social Responsibility, CSR, which ispresent in green concepts and in the bio-economyapproach. There are national and internationalopportunities in the competitiveness within theBio-economy.

Method:Qualitative research based on Literature.
