Why LEDs for Street LightingLightingLightingLighting?
Luminous efficiency (lm/W) of LED reached a level where it
makes sense to use for Street Light Applications
- from technical and economical point of view
LED street lights consume less energy
LED street lights last longer than conventional light sources
6
LED street lights last longer than conventional light sources
LED street lights need less maintenance than conventional
luminaires with bulbs (mercury, sodium, metal halide)
LED street lights can be dimmed
LED street lights produce white light
Less power consumption and less maintenance lead to less
green house gas emissions
SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
…. More advantages of LED-Street Lights
Multi-Layer-Lighting Technology is possible
Modular concept in similar type of fixture to fit most lighting applications
Constant Light Output through Intelligent Degradation Compensation
Thermo sensor to avoid useless degradation
Standard Dimming features – similar to existing fixture types
7SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Standard Dimming features – similar to existing fixture types
Combined post top or side entry mounting & tilting
High quality materials & high end design
Easy replacement of power supply
Dark Sky Friendly
Capsulate & Maintenance free light units (housing LED- modules)
Different Lighting Technologies
Clip-In Off-The-Shelf Modules
Lens Systems
8SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Lens + Reflector systems
Clip-In Off-The-Shelf Modules
+ Cheap solution
+ Capsulated LED-Module
+ Easy exchange of LED-modules inside LED-unit
- No capsulation of the LED-Unit causes ingress of dust, insects etc.
- Less optimized heat management → increased degradation
9SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
- Less optimized heat management → increased degradation
- Less efficient light performance than other systems
Application in traditional lighting fixture as “retrofit” from bulb to LED
Lens Systems
~ Each LED or LED-cluster covered by one lens
~ available in several levels of quality and prices
+ Good light distribution (directed light)
+ Customized light distribution available by some manufacturers
- lower quality lenses will show increased cloudiness in short time,
10SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
caused by influence of temperature and UV radiation (> 4500°K)
~ Quality of heat management depending on system design – coupling
of LED-PCB to the housing
Lens + Reflector Technology
New and quite revolutionary technology
Each LED is lighting the entire street
surface
By adding more LEDs the light level on
the street is increased – Multi Layer
Lighting Technology
11SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Lighting Technology
Several LEDs are put together in a so-
called light module
No dark spots on the surface!
By using more light modules the
lightoutput can be adopted to the
requirement acc. EN13201
Multi Layer Lighting
12SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Capsulated Light Unit
Light modules fully capsulated
during production process
No water, dust, sand or any
other environmental material
can ingress into light unit
13SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
This ensures that the light
output is not decreased and
that the light unit itself is
maintenance free
Intelligent Degradation Compensation
Sustainable mechanical, thermal and electronic design is the key
to keep degradation of the LEDs to an unavoidable minimum
The small amount of degradation that appears can be fully
compensated by intelligent degradation compensation systems
This ensures constant light output after years of operation as
14SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
This ensures constant light output after years of operation as
on day one at installation
To prevent damages to the LEDs by high temperatures (e.g.
switching on during hot daytime for checking) LED Street Lights
must be equipped with thermal sensors that automatically dim
down the luminaires before damage can occur to the LEDs
Dimming
Modern LED Street Lights are equipped with the following standard
dimming features, that are most commonly used:
Voltage Drop
Switched Phase
Ensures full replacability of conventional luminaires
15SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Ensures full replacability of conventional luminaires
Gives additional energy savings
Further decreases degradation of LEDs
Mounting Options in Europe
Combined post-top and side entry
Pole diameters from 42 to 76mm
Easy Replacement of old luminaires (retrofit)
16SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Replacement of Power Supply
Some LED Street Lights
provide easy and fast access to
the power supply which can be
easily replaced even during
operation as the power supply is
fully capsulated within a plastic

Dark Sky Friendlyness
18SWARCO FUTURIT | 22/04/2011
Dark Sky Friendlyness
Light pollution has become a serious issue already
LED-Streetlights MUST NOT emit ANY light above the horizon, to
be dark-sky-friendly and to be compliant already today to the
requirements of tomorrow

Retrofit Market vs. New Installations
Retrofit Market
 Only the luminaires are replaced
 Poles & Cables remain
Existing light level on the street

 Light uniformity should be improved
 Comparison of new LED-luminaires
New Installations
 Complete Lighting calculation is
done (light level, uniformity, …)
Only 10-20% of costs are above the surface (luminaires & poles)
