WHAT TO DO AT THE
SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT
Motor vehicle collisions happen and with an increase in the number of drivers on the highway, this also means that there’s more opportunity for things to go wrong behind the wheel. As of 2018, the U.S. had about 227.5 million licensed drivers. That’s an increase of more than 2 million drivers from the previous year.
With more drivers sharing the road on aging infrastructures that aren’t designed for this volume of vehicles, there’s a greater likelihood for problems including traffic congestion and crashes that can lead to both injuries and fatalities.
GENERAL RULES OF WHAT TO DO AT THE
SCENE OF AN ACCIDENT:
✔ Stop immediately - Remain calm, pull the vehicle as far offthe road as possible, shut off the engine, set emergency brakes and turn on your emergency flashers.
✔ Set out warning devices – this should be done within 10minutes and while wearing a reflective safety vest.
✔ Check for injuries – assist with First Aid Only and do NOTmove the injured if likely to cause further injury; call for medical assistance.
✔ Notify Law Enforcement – provide location, injury informa-tion and your contact information.
✔ Notify your local dispatch office AND your CPC Manager –and any others as instructed.
✔ Get Documentation – time and location, weather conditions, names and addresses of all involved parties AND insurance companies, name and department of investigation officer with report number, and names/addresses of all witnesses.
✔ Do NOT give statements or discuss details with anyone oth-er than Law Enforcement or DOT representatives or Company representative. In the event the media is present, NEVER grantan interview at the scene or make any comments to reporters. Simply state, “No comment,”
✔ Complete Written Vehicle Accident Report – Complete yourwritten report at the scene while details are fresh.
✔ Comply with any required Post Accident Drug/Alcohol Test

MOUTHING OFFDO’S and DON’TS for GOOD ORAL HEALTH
We all know that brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing and visiting your dentist regularly is key to good oral health. But what you eat and drink plays an equally important role.
Here are a few simple steps to practice:
What causes gum disease?Gum disease, an infection of tissues that keep your teeth in place, can occur
when plaque isn’t removed from teeth. Plaque can harden into tartar along the
gum line. The tartar can’t be cleaned with simple brushing, and allows bacteria
to collect and irritate the gums. The early stages of gum disease, called gingi-
vitis, can usually be reversed with a professional cleaning and regular brushing
and flossing. If it’s not taken care of, however, it can progress to periodontitis.
This form of gum disease can lead to the gums pulling away from the teeth, the loss of bone, or loose or lost teeth.
When the condition reaches this stage, a dentist can provide information about treatment options. Terms to know:
• Periodontal disease: Gum disease
• Plaque: A sticky film covering your teeth• Gingivitis: A mild form of gum disease
• Periodontitis: A serious form of gum disease, which may lead to tooth loss.
Enjoy coffee without sacrificing a pearly white smileWorried about staining your teeth by drinking coffee?
Dental experts say the health benefits of coffee outweigh the potential staining, and if tooth discoloration is a concern, you can take steps.
• Sip through a straw to reduce the amount of coffee that touches your teeth.
Rinse your mouth with water after drinking coffee.
• Wait at least 30 minutes after drinking coffee to brush your teeth. Acidic drinks such as
coffee soften tooth enamel and the dentin beneath it. The enamel starts to harden within a half hour.
• If your teeth do develop stains from coffee, a dentist can safely bleach your teeth.
However, bleaching doesn’t prevent future staining, so you may need future treatments.
DO. EAT YOUR FRUITS & VEGGIESThese foods provide you with fiber and an extra dose of H20. This combination helps balance the sugars in your mouth while activating an increase in saliva as you chew, washing away acids that build up in your mouth.
DO. CHEW GUMChewing gum increases the flow of the saliva in your mouth, which helps keep food and bacteria from getting stuck in your teeth. Saliva production also increases the calci-um and phosphates in your mouth, which help strengthen tooth enamel. Choose a product with the ADA seal of approval to ensure that it’s sugar-free. Sugar-free gum contains sweeteners such as sorbitol or xylitol that are non-cavity causing because they don’t feed the plaque in your mouth. Plaque feeds on sug-ar, which results in tooth decay.
DON’T. CHOMP DOWN ON HARD CANDIESSteer clear of hard candies. Not only are these candies filled with sugar, but they also put your teeth at risk for chipping and breaking when you chew on them.
DON’T. CONSUME SUGARY FOODSEating foods high in sugar and drink-ing sugar-based drinks can have a significant negative impact on your teeth. Reading food labels is as important to your oral health as it is to your overall health.
DO. MILK ITDairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese are rich with calcium and protein – and low in sugar – helping to strengthen your teeth.
DO. FILL UP ON WATERDrinking water helps wash food and other particles out of your mouth, neutralizing the acid that plaque feeds on.
DON’T. GET TOO STICKYBeware of sticky foods – even the healthy ones – because they’re hard to unstick! Whether you’re eating candy or dried fruit, be sure to rinse out your mouth afterward and brush as soon as possible.
DON’T. CRUNCH THE ICEGrinding down on ice can damage your enamel or cause chipping or cracking.
