Overview
• Experimental Objective• Introduction• Background Information• Materials• Procedure• Data/Observation• Results• Conclusion

Experimental Objective
• Design and construct boom• Enter boom in competition against other booms• Learn how booms are used and factors
considers while designing• Create a boom that extends 1.5 meters from the
edge of the anchor
![Page 4: TDT Reunited Lab 10 Prestation Updated](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062503/587f6d561a28ab9b398b73af/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)
Introduction
• Booms lift and move heavy loads– Loads even heavier than the actual boom
• Some examples of booms– Cantilever Boom– Rotating Boom– Telescoping Forklift Boom– Architecture Boom

Background Information
• When constructing a boom engineers must be aware of stress and strain
• Stress is the external force acting upon an object
• Strain is the measure of deformation cause by stress

Background Information
• There are three types of stresses:

Materials
• 2 Thick Dowels (7/16 in. x 48 in.)• 2 Thin Dowels (5/16 in. x 48 in.)• 6 Bamboo Skewers (12 in.)• Cellophane Tape• Kevlar String
![Page 8: TDT Reunited Lab 10 Prestation Updated](https://reader035.vdocument.in/reader035/viewer/2022062503/587f6d561a28ab9b398b73af/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Procedure
• Sketch design of boom• Collect materials • Carved 2 wholes into 1 thick dowel• Cut 2 thin dowels in half• Tape the 2 thin dowels together• Connect Kevlar string to the thick dowel• Ask TA weigh boom• Calculate boom weight and design ratio
