Teeco’s 2018 Open House & Training Days Are Coming!

Be on the lookout for more information soon!

It’s never too early to start thinking about the WPERC Silent Auction. The Silent Auction, benefitting the WPERC Scholarship Fund, is held every year at the Western Propane Convention in May. Whether you’re a convention ex-hibitor, a product manufacturer, or just a generous soul, you have an opportu-nity to donate an item that will help raise funds for this program which helps in-dustry members’ children attend college or vocational school. It’s always great to have a variety of items; large and small, fun and serious, industry related or not, to bid on at the event. And speaking of bidding... your bids are also a key factor in the success of the Silent Auction! Last year, 36 items were donated, raising over $11,000 for the Scholarship Fund. This year’s goal is even higher! If you would like to donate an item for this year’s Silent Auction, please con-tact Summer at the Western Propane Gas Association ([email protected]) or Mary at Teeco Products ([email protected]). This year will feature a number of ways you or your company will be recognized for your donation.

Remember: As a member of the Arizona, Nevada, Pacific, Rocky Mountain, or West-ern Propane Gas Association, your chil-dren are eligible for these Scholarships. Contact the WPGA for more information.

Teeco’s Regional Sales Managers are equipped to train you and your team on an array of propane equipment. They can provide FREE onsite training in your training room, at the tailgate of your truck, or wherever it’s most convenient for you.

Some of the most requested topics are RegO Regulators, Filler Valves & Service Valves, Smith Pumps, Corken Pumps, and Ca-thodic Protection. However, classes can often be tailored to suit your company’s specific training needs.

Contact your Teeco Representative for more information, or to schedule a free training session.

I’d like to star t by wishing everyone a Happy New Year and hope everyone had a prosperous 2017. It is amazing as I get older how much faster time flies.

This issue of Teeco Topics covers a couple of retirements; John Ives with Smith Pumps and Gary Herrington with Red Seal Measurement. Both of them worked over 40 years in our industry. That is a ton of experience and knowledge that will be no longer be available.

For tunately, they both worked for com-panies that do a great job of grooming the next generation of propane veter-ans to make sure that all that knowl-edge gets passed along. I know that I constantly look within our organization for our next manager or next customer service representative and make sure they are getting the proper training to help them grow. If this industry is to have a future, we need to train the next generation.

All of us propane veterans have an obligation to train and pass on our ex-periences and knowledge to the next generation.

This is something that everyone at Teeco takes seriously. We are here to help you. All our sales personnel are equipped to offer tailgate training to your employees. We offer Vendor training schools. We lend our facility free of charge to propane associations for CETP training. We have a YouTube channel where you can view training videos, and in September, our Open House will be all about training with two full days of classes. So all you have to do now is take advantage of what we have to offer and let us help you train your next generation of em-ployees.

Tech TopicWHEN YOU RECEIVE YOUR PALLET OF AUTO COIL PIPE – 1. Read the label located on the black stretch wrap and confirm the correct size of pipe has been received.2. Inspect the black outer wrap for any tears that may indicate pipe damage. If dam-age is present, note it on the Bill of Lading.3. Locate the supplied cutting tool taped to the outside of the silo.4. Carefully cut the black stretch wrap using the supplied cutting tool, beginning at the top of the silo. Be careful not to cut the clear stretch wrap around the individual coils. 5. Cut enough of the black outer stretch wrap to expose the number of coils needed. 6. Remove the needed coils. 7. Fold loose black stretch wrap over remaining coils on pallet until needed.

WHEN HANDLING INDIVIDUAL COILS – 1. Do not remove the clear stretch wrap as it maintains the coil integrity of individual coils. 2. Unroll the coil by pulling the pipe end from the inside center of the coil, leaving the clear outer stretch wrap in place. 3. If unrolling by hand, unroll pipe in the direction the ID pipe end is pointing. 4. If using uncoiling equipment, spools or cages, modification of the equipment may be necessary to allow for uncoiling from the center of the coil rather than the OD. 5. Return any unused pipe to the ID of the coil by tucking pipe back into the clear stretch wrap for storage.

Avoid problems with runaway coils by following these instructions.

What’s Happening in the Industry

John Ives Retires from Smith Pumps

Above are a few photos from John’s retirement celebration.

Below is one from back in the day.

A lot has changed in the last 47 years. Walt Smith, President of Smith Pumps, shared a few of these gems at a retirement celebra-tion for John Ives, who began working at Smith Pumps in 1970...• Richard Nixon was President of the United States• The cost of gas was 36 cents per gallon• A postage stamp was 6 cents• And an 8-track stereo player was $39I mean, what’s an 8-track player?? Just kidding... John was hired back then as a “trainee in assembly” for $2.50/hour. He learned quickly, and became the Assistant Supervisor of the Assembly Department, then Supervisor. He was later offered a position in the office to assist with Cus-tomer Service. After that, began a rigid schedule of travelling to various events around the country. In time, John was promoted to the position of Sales Manager where he wore many hats, all with his usual organization and attention to detail.John was also instrumental in the birth of the Full Circle swivel in the 1990’s. Those SMAC-series hose reel swivels were the first of their kind to be listed with Underwriters Laboratories. Today, Full Circle continues to provide useful and highly engineered products that are innovative, user-friendly, maintenance-free, and perfor-mance based.John has been an invaluable source of knowledge and experience, not only at Smith Pumps and Full Circle, but in the Propane Indus-try as a whole. He has provided countless hours of training to in-dustry members over the years, including to many of us at Teeco Products. His quick wit and warm personality will be missed at the many industry events where he’s been a regular for decades.Needless to say, John has worked hard over the years, and he loved what he did. He’s now enjoying his well-earned retirement and spending lots of time with his grandkids. John, we wish you all the best!

Bob Bailey, President of Teeco Products, presents John Ives with a Meter Head

Clock to celebrate his retirement and his longstanding relationship with Teeco.

In preparation for Gary Herrington’s retirement, Red Seal Measurement brought in Chris Bowers. Chris is no stranger to the industry. See his introduction below. Teeco wishes both Gary and Chris all the best!

Bob Bailey, President of Teeco presents Gary Herrington with a Meter Head Clock

Gary Herrington retired from Red Seal Measurement on December 31, 2017, after decades of service in the Propane Industry. His first industry job was with Petrolane in the late 1960’s. He went on to work for several other companies, including Suburban Propane, Empire Gas, Cornerstone Propane and Herit-age Propane.

As Gary says, “I worked as a Yard Man, Customer Service Representative, Branch Manager, Area Sales Manager, Regional Sales Manager and Divisional Sales Manager for various Propane Distributors.”

He was also Regional Sales Manager for Teeco, covering Southern California, then went on to work for Red Seal Measurement until his retirement.

I started in the propane industry in the mid 70’s working for our family owned business in Deer Lodge Montana, which eventually sold to a group of investors and became Northern Energy. I continued on with them until they were purchased by Heritage Propane, whom I continued with until their purchase by AmeriGas, whom I also worked with for a short while.

In my 40 plus years in the propane industry, my job titles included but were not limited to; cylinder dock man, bobtail driver, service manager, district manager of three separate locations, Regional Manager and Vice President for Heritage Propane, and Area Director for AmeriGas. I was away from the propane industry for a brief time, and in those few years I did a number of things, including consulting on a large propane vapor distribution system. I also took a course in gun repair and opened a gun repair shop.

I was also active and involved in the Rocky Mountain Propane Association for a number of years.

In October of this year, I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to go to work for Red Seal Meas-urement, the company that manufacturers Neptune meters. I am now the Western Regional Sales Manager, which basically includes all the area west of Texas and portions of Canada. My primary responsibility is to meet with propane marketers and distributors, introduce them to the product lines that Red Seal has developed, and assist those marketers in taking advantage of technology that is now available to them. I am excited for the opportunity, and look forward to working with the many great people in the propane industry.

Jurupa Valley Grand Opening

John Kamps, owner and founder of Kamps Propane, cut the ribbon at the Grand Opening Ceremony. He started the company in 1969, with a used truck and an office located in his 2 bedroom apartment. It has since grown to include 13 locations in California, 2 locations out of state (High Country Propane), the wholesale company Kiva Energy, and Pick Up Propane. The Mayor of Jurupa Valley and representatives from the Control-ler’s Office and the Chamber of Commerce also attended the event.

Congratulations and All the Best to Our Friends at Kamps Propane!

Pick-Up Propane (left), also owned by Kamps and located at the Jurupa Valley site, provides cylinder exchange services. Their new state of the art facility was designed with efficiency in mind. Inside the warehouse, cylinders are emptied, cleaned, tested, sand blasted, painted and labeled to get them ready for use by custom-ers. The facility can process in excess of 4,000 cylinders in a day.

In October, family owned Kamps Propane celebrated the Grand Opening of their newest facility in Jurupa Valley, CA. The Jurupa Valley location includes retail office and showroom, as well as 120,000 gallons of propane storage capacity. It also houses Pick-Up Propane, the cylinder exchange side of the business.Although planning for this facility has been in the works for several years, construction officially began 2 years ago.

Jason Huie is Plant Manager at the Jurupa Valley location. Jason has been with Kamps for a year and has 18 years of experience in the propane industry. The company’s expansion to this new loca-tion has been exciting for everyone involved. Safety was paramount in the design of the plant. Some of the main safety features include shut-off stations throughout the plant, gas detectors and water monitors.
